We have been summering in Kennebunkport for decades. Every year our family shares a few meals at the White Barn Inn and orders carry out picnic lunches for the beach. This morning we were surprised to see we could make a reservation for breakfast on open table, and decided to head over. Upon arriving, we were told that they would not serve us as we are not house guests there. It was clearly their mistake to populate reservations in the app, and yet they would not honor them. We went for our first wedding anniversary this past February. While many businesses in Kennebunk shut down for the winter, we felt the Inn was vibrant and bustling. The service was outstanding from the valet who greeted us to take our bags to the front desk and everyone we crossed paths with throughout the weekend. Service was friendly and on point at every exchange. Our room was comfortable, updated as to not feel too rustic but still cozy. Even the bathroom was great, all marble and very spacious. This place is absolutely amazing! We did the cooking class where the chefs went through every step very thoroughly and made it fun. It wasn't rehearsed at all. Off the cuff and interactive. You were in the kitchen with the other chefs, such a fun experience! The food from the class was absolutely amazing! We ate pesto gnocchi with lobster, veggies and I can't say enough how delicious and fresh it was! For dessert we had soufflé and it came out perfect, it felt like we were eating clouds! The chefs Ryan and Wilson were knowledgeable yet down to earth. The junior suite room is spacious yet cozy AND it has an electric fire place! Ok so you know it's absurdly expensive going in, so expectations are high. We went in the off season during when their rates are still near Manhattan high levels. The service there is incredible from the moment you pull in. The restaurant is fantastic for both breakfast and dinner, plenty of reviews on that. We spent a couple hours at the spa and I must say the most relaxing services we've ever had. The spa is small and not one those full amenity places with lunch and other facilities. It is basically three rooms so you have the place to yourself. Seriously splurge, pay the excessive service fees and you'll be glad you did. One disappointment was the room. The place was far from full, yet we got put into a room on the 3rd floor, basically the attic, with highly pitched ceilings and you had to duck to get into bed. Hit my head countless times. Bed was super comfortable and the shower had enough pressure to wash an elephant. And if you are coming in the summer, make sure you don't get stuck on the 3rd floor as it incredibility hot. It was 55 outside and we had to run the AC non-stop to keep it at a normal temp. Great place but based on the room we had I would definitely inquire about room options available at that rate. read more

The White Barn Inn has to be one of the best hotels close to NYC, but at the same time a good distance from all the traffic, noise and crowds. I went there for the weekend and by the time we left, I still could not do all the activities available at the hotel. I made sure I went to the spa and ate a nice lobster (it is Maine after all). Although the Kennebunks are somewhat too touristy for my taste, the White Barn Inn is really a European Relais & Chateau, with amazing, personal service and a quiet atmosphere. Fruit and bottled water in your room daily, cleaned rooms several times a day, turn down service, afternoon tea, liqueurs - every small touch was there to make you feel comfortable and cared for by staff. The room we had was small, but this is an Inn, not a hotel. The location was walking distance to the beach and the shops, which was convenient. Highly recommended for the discerning traveler. read more

This is a great boutique hotel/inn. We were in the area for a wedding so were unable to take advantage of the award winning restaurant, but based on our experience at the hotel itself, I am sure it lives up to the hype. Next time we will be sure to try it. The only problem we had in our 2 night stay ocurred with the in-room wine service. It was very apparent that the non-restaurant staff was not trained in proper service. Though this was not a big deal to us, I can see it being one to others at this price point. For our First Anniversary, we chose The White Barn, since every one of our relatives & friends recommended it highly. Since we live in Manhattan, we're familiar with 5-star restaurant service at places such as David Burke and Donatella, Picholine and Café Bolud. It's unfortunate that The White Barn did not live up to either our relative's recommendations, or our experiences at other 5 Star restaurants. We called one month in advance to make our reservation, advised the staff that we were coming up for our First Anniversary and requested the "window table," which is the best table in the house. To The White Barn's defense, they did advise us that due to demand, they may not be able to give us the table we requested. However, since my wife's parents were seated at the "window table" table during the high season without requesting it, we thought that there was a good chance we would be seated there. The reservations agent also said that the chef always does "something special" for people celebrating anniversaries and the like, so we were really looking forward to our experience there. Upon arrival, we were walked to our table, which was adjacent to the "window table." Unfortunately, this was probably one of the worst tables in the house. The chairs were arranged to face into the corners of the restaurant, and the glare from the spotlights on the garden outside and the light from the paintings on the wall shone in our faces the entire meal. We were pleasantly surprised that my wife's sister had sent us a bottle of champagne to enjoy, which is a moderate $220 on the White Barn's wine list. Apparently, this set us up for bad service. We had originally planned to order the wine pairings with our meal (at an extra charge) but we chose not to, since we had the champagne. I can still see the smirk on the waiter's face as he took away the wine list, when we did not order an additional bottle of wine. As we had our champagne poured, the couple that was granted the "window table" came in. Our main complaint is that this couple was not celebrating a special occasion; they were out for a Sunday dinner, and just seemed to know the wait staff well. Our reaction was that we were brushed aside for our special occasion that we planned well in advance, so that a 20-something and his girlfriend who knew the staff were given the best table in the house. We understand that guests at the inn or couples with a more significant occasion would get precedence. But it almost seemed like the staff went out of their way to make this a lousy celebration for us - including the fact that we were sat right next to the table we had requested. We were asked if we would like to order bottled water. We agreed, and ordered a San Pelligrino. The bottled water never came, however it was still included on the check at the end of dinner, which is a freshman mistake not typical of this level of restaurant. During dinner, the thing that surprised us the most, was that the synchronized serving that our relatives boasted about never occurred. The wait staff seemed overly frantic and rushed around to cover all of the tables, which was also evidenced by the fact that our water and champagne glasses also sat empty periodically through the meal. As for the food, it was overall quite good, though I do agree with the previous review's characterization of the lobster spring roll as not that great. The description included lobster and daikon (which the waiter painstakingly described for us, though I have eaten it many times before), but the daikon was a only few shavings on the plate, and it the interior was a pretty dense lobster filling - with nothing else. It's also nice to know that a five-diamond restaurant has trouble getting the herb crust correct on fish, just like when I try to prepare this dish at home. Part of the halibut was coated in what appeared to be undercooked breadcrumbs. The corn chowder, however, was phenomenal. Overall, we feel that we were ripped off by being provided a substandard level of service and that the dining experience suffered from a lack of detail, which really put a damper on our special occasion. We will not be returning. Oh, and the "something special" we got for our first anniversary? When our desserts came, they had candles stuck into them and "Happy Anniversary" ineptly scrawled in chocolate sauce on a piece of white chocolate sitting on the plate. We were left wondering if we were eating at The White Barn Inn or Baskin Robbins. read more

Charming, relaxing and unpretentious (yes even in New England). Staff is friendly and accommodating even in the busy days of Summer. Located in a perfect area to walk to the beach or town, we enjoyed staying at this Inn so much. Old time New England Inn that is comfortable and updated. We've had several wonderful meals at the restaurant and the wonderful French Canadian bartender does one of the best classic martini's on the Eastern seaboard. After spending days bike riding all over town and then at the beach, it was great to come back and get a few hours at the gorgeous pool. The attention to detail and nod to old time elegance was not lost on us. We were so relaxed the time we spent in Maine and this Inn played a huge part. read more

The hotel is definitely in need of a renovation. The carpets in the main hotel are pretty stained and tattered. The no elevator will be an issue for the average older person as the steps to the rooms are numerous and steep. The beds linens are definitely average, no feather pillows and not the quality you would expect when paying the amount that is charged to stay here. It's quaint off the beaten path. It also shows its age and not in a good way. The person that escorted us to the very small room said that another company had recently bought the property and intends to put some money into the facility. It surely needs it! The restaurant looks good, only ate their desert which was very good. That's the reason for a three star as it's definitely not the property itself. The service is okay, no real complaints. It's just for the value and what you might expect, this is a very average hotel and coming from the Four Seasons, it doesn't even get close. read more

We had read some so so recent reviews on trip advisor but our time for the most part was fantastic. We stayed 2 nights in September in the separate garden annex. The front desk staff at all hours were responsive, friendly and went over the top to assist. We had a couple massage which was really good. We also had dinner in the wine room. The food and service were fantastic. One can never go wrong with their fettuccine lobster. The lack of a star was for the lack of communication or miscommunication from the event staff about payment. We were not billed for the event for over a month and at one time were told it was all set. This was our wedding so magical benefactor was not completely out of the question. It was just not the smoothest communication from the event staff. Another example was a call I put in about 3 months prior to event to make sure everything was in place. I was told an individual would call me within 30 minutes, when they did not and I called in, they stated something to the effect of,"When corporate calls you have to take it." I just thought this statement to be ill-advised from a 5 star hotel. I totally get that statement, but I expect some sort of over the top apology from a 5 star hotel, not necessarily the truth about where your priorities lie. read more

My wife and I had dinner in the Bistro, the other side is a 4 course Michelin rated meal. The setting, ambiance, and live piano player are worth 5 stars, so how does it earn only 2 stars....service and food. First the service, our server had poor knowledge of any of the entrees and was generally unlikeable. No big deal, but these annoyances became amplified after to food came out. The $15 lobster bisque was good for 2-3 bites but was so rich and seemingly so soaked in soy sauce that you could not eat more. The tuna starter was tasty but was served in a hard to eat taco bowl. Finally the white pizza was served on a crusty pita with almost no cheese and crumbled as you but it. The overall experience was nice because of my date and the ambiance but it was comical. The server asked 'how was the meal?' I responded 'The pizza was not very good' and was obvious because only a third of it was eaten....the server did not respond other than a 30 second awkward silence and then said robotically 'did you save room for dessert?' Not even acknowledging the last comment...my date and I broke out in laughter after it was so awkward. I would have sent it back earlier but we had already been there 1.5 hours so we didn't want to wait for a new entree. I had heard such good things about the White Barn that perhaps my expectations were too high but it certainly did not meet the hype. read more
