My wife and I have stayed in Auberge Resorts in several states. While not inexpensive, we've always felt the accommodations and service delivered value. Not the case with the White Barn Inn. The cost (~&1,300/night) is in line with the other Auberge resorts. There the similarities end. Our room (Garden 2) was claustrophobically small, a single uncomfortable chair for sitting, a single sink in the bathroom, erratic cable TV and heat that exceeded the thermostat setting. I've had rooms at a Hampton Inn that were roomier and much better furnished for $150/night. The staff was friendly, but in one case did not follow up on a promise. We had dinner reservations at the property restaurant for 6:00 pm and asked if they could move it to 6:30 or 7:00. The gentleman at the front desk said he would check and let us know. We never heard from him. VERY disappointed in our stay and recommend to all to avoid this property. The Auberge brand has been greatly tarnished in our eyes. read more

I have always wanted to go to the WBI because of the exclusivity about it. I was not disappointed! The Inn is smallish, not some giant monstrosity posing as an inn. Upon driving in, my car was parked and the valet carried my bags to my room (note there are no elevators). I was offered a lemonade with or without rum at check in. In room, there was a personal note and a basket filled of Maine goodies. It's these touches that differentiate the Inn. The rooms are small but cozy. The bed was super comfortable and had top shelf linens. The bathroom was large with a claw tub and heated floor. Although the Inn is old, it is not run town. Perfectly modern baths with no signs of wear and tear. The rate included breakfast onsite and we could choose anything and as much as we wanted. Each breakfast came with a pastry to start. Their pastry is something to scream about. So flakey and full of butter. You can have a complimentary coffee sent to your room (pic) with also included pastry. They left mini-whoopie pies next to our bed at turndown! We enjoyed recapping next to the fire at night where there were only two seats. The staff is attentive and phenomenal without being intrusive or affected. It was as magical of an experience as I imagined. This review is strictly in regards to their spa. I was given a gift certificate for the White Barn Inn spa in 2019 and after delays from the pandemic then dragging my feet, I finally booked an appointment to use it. So what if the original gift certificate of $257 would have covered a full spa day including massage, facial, and manicure when it was originally given to me and now it only covered a massage...I was ready to pamper myself. Part of me was curious what changes in the spa could have warranted such a steep increase in price, but I figured they had added some nice touches and ambiance to make it feel more luxurious. The spa is nice enough, nothing special. The receptionist who greeted us was polite and helpful. When I was lead back to the room, it was quite comfortable with a fireplace and a nice ambiance. Again, not sure if this is really a $250 (not including tip) massage level of feel but I haven't had my massage yet. My masseuse shows me the oils available, that's nice. Then when she asks if I have any medical conditions, I say no but I do have some tension in my neck and upper shoulders if you could focus a bit on that during the massage. She then responds that it is a "Swedish massage" which is meant for relaxation, not to help with muscle pain. What?? I get massages regularly, always booked as Swedish massages, and I have never had a masseuse flat out refuse to address muscle tension during my massage. This was a 90 minute massage too, so there would have been plenty of time to do some focus on the back and get the rest of the full body massage in. This was extra offensive given the price of the massage. For a $250 massage (plus automatic 20% gratuity), I think I should get a little extra work on my neck and shoulders if I'm asking for it. Unfortunately, even for a "relaxation massage" it was pretty mediocre and she never once checked in with me about pressure or making sure I was liking what she was doing. So in short, spa itself was fine, nothing special, not worth the prices they are asking (my $250 massage was one of the cheapest items on their menu). My masseuse left an awful taste in my mouth when she openly refused to address neck/upper back muscle tension during my massage. I could tell she just wanted to do her typical routine and felt like it was an imposition to ask for customization (even though I don't think addressing neck and upper back tension is particularly out of the ordinary). I have had massages for years at all levels from the $50 massage chain to the $400+ 4 star experience and I have never had such a rigid and rude masseuse before. read more

Chef really needs to improve the texture and flavor of their Vegan options. It's sooo great that they have a vegan entree but you can tell it was designed by a meat eater. Get some vegans to taste the next vegan entree and provide feedback. Also there NEEDS to be a real dessert (NOT sorbet) added to the menu. read more

The white barn inn is a perfectly comfortable bed and breakfast experience tucked away in between the beaches at Kennebunk and the downtown and tourist areas of Kennebunkport. With it's small size comes personalized service and what a treat it was. From the great valets, waitstaff at the restaurant, pool side servers to the amazing front desk (Ben was stellar with recommendations), we were able to truly relax in our brief three day stay. The property has bikes for guests to use (ample amounts) that are well maintained and given it's great location, most everything around was a short bike ride away. Breakfast choices were fantastic (highly recommend the lobster eggs Benedict) and the daily coffee deliveries to the room were a great way to wakeup to get a start on the day. While the rooms were small, I never found myself looking for space, and the water pressure was first class for great relaxing showers. The pool provided a good spot to finish some daily reading, and again, perfectly clean and spotless and not a bug in sight. Was able to make it to the final lobster bake of the season and the dinner did not disappoint whatsoever. The company was great and all in all, a 5 star experience. read more

The skin on my duck breast should definitely have been more crispy than it was and for dessert I had the chocolate orange but the chocolate was a dry/crispy/crumble which didn't taste much of chocolate so really needed more chocolate taste. I booked a long weekend at the White Barn Inn at 30 weeks pregnant for my last hurrah / self-care retreat before the baby comes. From the start of my first phone call to book my trip, the staff was amazing, thoughtful, remembered every detail of my needs and truly went above and beyond (especially Collin! Thank you!). From the front desk team to the waiters to the valet - this team truly operates like they own the place, are proud of it, and are dedicated to you having the perfect experience. I booked a garden room, had three meals (one dinner and two breakfasts) at Little Barn, one fine dining dinner in the main restaurant and booked four spa treatments at their in-house spa (soak/scrub, facial, massage and reflexology). On food: truly stupendous fine dining experience. Every detail is thought through - from the amuse bouche to the petit fours beginning and ending the meal. I had mushroom soup and pork belly that was game changing, and the waiter nailed my ask for one glass of wine to pair with everything. The wait staff don't rush you, know the details of your experience and stay, and carry an easy, respectful conversation with all their guests. I felt like I was truly experiencing a page from the past in the best way with my fine dining meal. Service like this just doesn't exist anymore and the food was spectacular (as was the piano player!) On the spa: BEAUTIFUL spa rooms with enormous soaking tubs and fireplaces depending on your treatment, and knowledgeable, friendly staff. Thank you for pampering me! At night I would curl up in front of the fire in the beautifully decorated living room and Colin brought me tea while I devoured a book. Every morning coffee - just the way I like it - was delivered to my front door. My car was always waiting for me when I wanted to venture out, and they even gave me cookies and bottles of water as I left. I hands down recommend White Barn Inn for anyone who needs a few days to feel refreshed, get some fresh Maine air, eat fabulous food and enjoy the simple pleasure of things done extraordinarily well, with exceptionally nice people. he White Barn Inn has been on my bucket list for years now. I had heard of its charm, history and unparalleled service, but nothing had prepared me for what the actual experience was like. Every detail has been thought out and crafted for your comfort and ease. We didn't use the valet but every time we saw them they waved and said hello. When we checked in we were given a cold glass of lemonade. Collin, who checked us in, gave us a mini history lesson and tour of the hotel and personally led us to our room, where our bags were already waiting. There was a tray full of complimentary snacks and drinks, and they even filled the ice bucket for us. (FYI the carrot cookies were incredible!). When we got back from dinner the room had been tidied (and bathroom fully reset, I made a mess showering and they made it like we had never touched the bathroom) and when is the last time you had turn down service at a hotel? Well you get it here, and they even sent up two tiny whoopie pies from the restaurant. We were also told that if we went out walking and we went too far or got lost there was a car service to come pick us up wherever we were. The next morning we had a basket of fresh coffee, cream and two mini chocolate croissants waiting for us outside of our room. But in all honesty the very nicest and most precious thing to me was the handwritten note thanking us for staying. That is some old school etiquette that I have never received in all my years on this planet. Is it expensive? Yep. Is it worth it? Every penny. In this era of cost cutting measures and stripped down amenities this is like a breath of fresh air. We are not wealthy people but I will make it a point to save up to stay here the next time I find myself in Maine. read more

This is overpriced and poor quality service. Checked into a garden room after a long drive from Vermont. Told registration desk that toilet kept running and door to toilet room did not shut closed. They were to send an engineer over If they did I would not know as we were eating dinner. Returned to an ever flushing toilet and broken bathroom door. Plus. No place to store luggage. No safe. I'm basing this review on my experience with other hotels, inns, and resorts. My husband and I visited for a 4 night stay mid-October of 2021 for our 25th wedding anniversary. On arrival, I wasn't sure what to think. Basically the front was nice, but the back seemed messy and chaotic. Normally this wouldn't matter, but because of the size, there is minimal outdoor seating and it is all in the back facing this. It is surrounded by beautiful nature, however. We couldn't see the pool since it is a little separate and fenced in, plus someone was having an event so we couldn't check it out, anyway. Inside was very nice and east coast country homey, I guess you could say. We were in the top (3rd) floor with no elevator and 2 flights of steep staircases. Thankfully the staff is wonderful there and they took care of our luggage. At a rate of $900 per night including daily breakfast, we received a very small room with minimal windows. There were 2 windows in the bed area and they were very small. There were 2 nightstands, a small 3 drawer dresser, 2 stools where we had to keep my husband's suitcase for lack of storage space, and a small chair. The bathroom had a nice, stand up shower and the water pressure was amazing. The vanity was small, but doable. There was a lighted makeup mirror, but due to space I had to move it to the bed area and set it on a turn over basket for getting dressed...so no desk. I literally sat on the floor (I'm 49, so not the ideal situation). There was a closet with minimal hanging space and hangers, but did have some shelves. My husband and I made it work. I stored my luggage there and emptied contents onto the shelves and into the dresser. My overall on this is at $900 a night, I don't want to face making things work, but housekeeping was always on top things and definitely made the situation more bearable. The breakfast was always wonderful, however we never could get in the dining room for dinner. As guests of the hotel, $900 a night, and being that it was our anniversary, they could have at least warned us about the dining room and the dire need for reservations before coming. Two nights we literally wandered around Kennebunkport trying to find anywhere to eat. At one point we gave up and ordered room service. This would be ok except for the fact that we had no table or cart to eat at and at 49 and 52, we had to sit and eat on our floor. We made the best of it and had a good time despite that, but come on... The Inn did get us reservations at 2 other restaurants, one a decent drive away on our anniversary. It wasn't the best or the worst, but I wouldn't choose it had we had other choices for our anniversary dinner. I dressed for the occasion, but unfortunately was overdressed for the place. The hotel was situated between the beach and downtown Kennebunk Port. Both were walking distance, about 15 minutes IF in comfortable walking shoes. Otherwise, do not expect to wear nice shoes and be able to do this without some pain. So location was ok depending upon exactly what you are wanting, convenient in one way, very inconvenient in another. They do provide bicycles ‍. Overall, the total experience was disappointing in that it was just acceptable, the "bad" being balanced by the "good". Not worth $900 a night, but definitely a learning experience for our next visit to the northeast coast. read more

The Spa at White Barn Inn is so, so lovely. My partner and I booked a couples massage for his birthday and were beyond happy with our experience. Couples massages take place in the couples suite which has a fire place, large soaking tub, and private bathroom with a shower. We were given 30 minutes to enjoy the bath prior to our 60 minute massage - super romantic. Our massage therapists were amazing. We are both so sore (in a good way!) today. After our service, we received dark chocolate truffles made on property and small, departing gift. We will be back! read more

While we thought this was a lovely resort, our experience was literally life-threatening, and the response from management was unacceptable. We stayed in one of the cottages, and due to a faulty fireplace that did not draw, my husband and I suffered from smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning. Fortunately, the CO detector alarm went off in the middle of the night alerting us to evacuate. The fire dept came, the cottage was evacuated, and we were treated by EMTs. We continued to have symptoms (coughing and headache) for days, and all our belongings still smell of smoke. Amazingly, management will not refund our full $5000+ for our 2-night stay. I still cannot believe their lack of concern and dismissiveness. We've been going to WBI for decades, and the staff, service, and facility have really plummeted. Never again. Auberge Resorts take note - this place is a lawsuit waiting to happen. read more

We have been customers here for many years. We have had the opportunity to meet Chef Wolfe. We spent our entire careers in the hospitality industry. We understand any chef's need to make their own signature on the menu. Will not comment nor criticize any specific menu items within this review. We will however criticize the lack of what had become known as signature items over the years. Removing pan seared foie grois and attempting to substitute a preprepared item is wrong. Restaurants that correctly serve such a dish are few, but those that do are worth the trip from Salem NH to Kennebunk. The lobster entree selection is uninspired and lackluster. Those of us from New England know that lobster tail curl up upon cooking. Keeping them flat with skewers is not in keeping with Maine tradition. The other changes scripted around dessert service were also unnecessary and unwelcome. Chef make your mark without sacrificing tradition. . read more

The better reviews for the White Barn Inn are for the restaurant and the food, which is mis-leading. The carpets are soiled (both interior hallway and in our room) and the room we were in (#8) was not comfortable and did not function well. There are no flat surfaces to place a laptop. No mini fridge to store water and no hook for a wet towel in the bathroom. The views out the windows of our room are of the parking lot and roof-top plumbing. The service is good but it doesn't compensate for the sorry state of the Inn. Way over-priced. No idea why anyone would stay here. read more

This place USED to be the epitome of luxury and class. Then, they started letting children in. What used to be a resort for older customers turned into what is now a children-centered place. They have a beautiful pool that USED to be the place for quiet relaxing. Since there are now children running around in diapers screaming their heads off, it has become nothing more than an overpriced "resort" with a kiddie pool that caters to children. Do NOT come here if you are looking to relax--you'll be overrun with children. read more

One of the best meals we've ever had in Maine. Thank goodness for my brother treating us that evening though, because wow, it was easily a $600 tab among the four of us. Ambience...rich farmhouse. And I mean that in the best sense of the word. It's definitely an older crowd (we were the only under 40s), but if you're seeking quiet sophistication, this place is it. The cocktails were expertly made with fresh fruit extracts and bitters...solid drink menu with some interesting choices to try. My husband gauges the quality of a seafood restaurant by the lobster bisque, and he wouldn't shut up about the perfect proportion of lobster/sherry/cream ratio that Grace Barn serves. At $25 a bowl, it was pretty damn close to liquid gold, so I'm happy they delivered on that. Entrees were expertly prepared...grass fed beef with chimichurri rub and wild caught salmon with beurre blanc were what we enjoyed that night. I'm pretty sure this would be a seasonal farm to table menu, so not sure our entrees would always be featured there. My dessert was an apple galette with maple bourbon gelato. I got the caviar and truffle lobster roll for my starter, the lobster bisque for my intermezzo, and (you guessed it) the Kennebunkport lobster for my main. Every single thing was perfection-- the service, the presentation, the ambiance, the live piano music, the taste. For my cocktail I got the g & t(ea) which was herbaceous, light, and refreshing. For dessert, I got the chocolate soufflé and coffee. They bought us out many other extras to taste, like oysters and tiny desserts to sample. At the end, we were given lavender and fennel salt to bring home that I'm so excited to cook with. One of the most exquisite dining experiences of my life, I can't wait to go back again! read more

A great get away! I came here for a 4 day holiday from real life. After driving way too long, this lodge was a sight. As soon as you enter you are greeted with hot apple cider and incredibly friendly staff. Though underdressed we went straight to the restaurant which has a quaint ambiance. I ordered the pumpkin soup, turkey dinner and an apple laced dessert. The soup was very good but a bit heavy. The turkey dinner was incredible. I wish I ordered another desert as I didn't love mind but it was an interesting concept. Moving onto the hotel itself, the rooms are cozy with a comfortable bed and nice shower. I liked the fireplace area and the continuous offering of hot teas. I also ate breakfast here and got the walnut pancakes which were absolutely delicious. Not worth the money. Venue, service and price point don't match. For price go somewhere else in Kennebunk. It was aggravating thinking about the price and what you received. Stayed at the inn during peak season, not relaxing at all. The room was lovely but small, and you couldn't open the windows, or I wasn't able to figure it out. Seemed like fresh air was a must during a pandemic, but who am I to say this. I felt like I was in a high end coffin. You also had to run a loud A/C unit the entire time. Wifi not protected. The staff friendly but they lack hospitality, in no way delivering the service at the rate paying. They just smile and know they are have you over a barrel so take the whitebarn inn as it is. They love to say "we are fully booked". No gym, no welcome drink, and a poorly ventilated barn house. The grounds aren't even nice, typical coastal vibe and again doesn't match the price point. A really lovely experience. Service was 5 star and unpretentious. We were able to order from the formal dining menu and the more casual bistro menu at the same time (so I ordered casual, my husband ordered more formal dishes). Recommend pomegranate mule to drink, Kennebunkport lobster roll, tagliatelle with lobster, mushrooms, and crispy chicken skin. Food is delicious but make sure you don't mind $50 for a "Lobster roll". Bistro is less formal. Most recently, Hubby and I enjoyed an evening at the bar - good drinks and quality food with live piano music. For us it was a nice evening out after walking around town. read more

We had a lovely stay in the loft suite a few weeks ago. It's nice to have your own space though it does abut the restaurant so if you are a light sleeper and early to bed, you might not this room. I have read the positive reviews and must conclude that there is more than one experience at the Inn. We reserved through hotel.com and our room (#9)was not as expensive as the direct prices. But if I had known what we were getting, I would never have gone ahead. It was our anniversary and we did have decent food at the Little Barn restaurant, though the drinks were very expensive and portions small. I could have put up with that if the room had been workable. It was tiny, a double bed with a creaky headboard, partly under the eves so one of us bumped our head each time we got up. And the bed was the only place to sit. There was one quaint and small chair with no reading light...and very small windows. So we were in a dark, small, uncomfortable room. The common area is small and mostly full with other parties so no place to go to sit and read. The bathroom was posh and good, but I would have traded an smaller shower for at least a comfortable chair. I know that places like this have resort fees....this was 40$ a day and when I asked what it was for, I was told the treats in the room, coffee delivery in the morning and any time during the day. The treats were made a big deal of when Colin checked us in....and they were Maine made, but a few gummy lobsters, 2 bottles of soda, and a few other items we didn't want don't make up for the truly uncomfortable room. The staff were all wonderful and attentive, and Colin who checked us in seemed overly so as he led us to our garret room. I sense that they in part try to make up for the lack of other amenities. We have stayed in hotels and resorts all over the world and this was the most disappointing. Go to the Cliff House in Ogunquit for a truly fine experience for less money. I am sorry for this as it left a bitter taste. I know the manager always replies to negative reviews, but what can one say about this??? read more

NEED SAFES. Brought parents to Kennebunkport from California for Prelude. While the restaurant is attractive, the appearance can be deceptive. For one, the rooms are dingy. But more importantly, there are no safes in the rooms for belongings. The room was $700 / night and the air handler ran constantly, the toilet ran constantly too in my parents room, and again no safes. We called about the running toilet immediately, so there was maintenance coming in and out in addition to housekeeping. But during their attempt to correct my parents' running toilet, my mothers jewelry box and father's phone charger went missing. We filed a police report through the Inn, but the only response by the Inn's GM (Daniel) was that he spoke to housekeeping and will keep us posted. We still had dinner at their restaurant, which was $135 / person, and which we had reserved long in advance. A policeman interviewed my mother before that dinner for the police report, which we were asked to do privately so other guests would not see, and he inspected their room following (at midnight). Not worth traveling to, period. Certainly not on a level with other Relais and Chateaux experiences we have had. The staff was friendly through the process, and the barn is nice, but it no where near made up for the disappointing rooms, valuable belongings going missing, or our having to spend so much of our short visit with the Kennebunk police. read more

We've been to quite a number of Relais & Chateaux hotels around the world. We always come back to the White Barn Inn. It is, by far, our favorite in in the USA. The rooms are clean, beautifully appointed and cozy. The bathrooms are a wonderful size with every amenity you could ask for. The staff is warm and welcoming without being overly aggressive. We ate in the Bistro, not the restaurant. The restaurant had a prix fix menu that was $125 per and not everything being offered sounded that appealing. The bistro was still an excellent choice. My fiancé and I got engaged at the White Barn Inn a few weeks ago and we had an ABSOLUTELY amazing experience! Everything was perfect. We were especially impressed with the manager- Daniel - who took us on a private bike tour of the Kennebunk Port coast and neighboring towns. He also arranged for champagne, cheese, crackers and fruit to be set up for the proposal on a private beach. I can't thank Daniel and the staff at The White Barn Inn enough for helping to make our engagement so special. Our dinner in the dining room was equally incredible. My wife and I had a combo birthday / anniversary / night-away-from-small-child spurge getaway planned. As a Relais & Chateau Group hotel we thought how could we possibly go wrong. We've stayed at others and had amazing experiences. My wife planned and booked it months ago. Booked a Saturday night dinner in the dining room - one of the primary reasons for staying there. She reconfirmed everything a few nights before we left. Good that she did because they had massacred her name and couldn't find the reservation for a few heart stopping moments. Showed up at the hotel and we were told that we missed our Friday night reservation. What? We firmly but pleasantly told them our reservation was for Saturday night and they apologized and said they would figure it out the next day - Saturday. We go for breakfast in the AM (phenomenal) and go to the front desk. They repeat the same thing - we missed our reservation, but they were chipper and said they'd talk to the restaurant manager and figure it out. We were happy. We come back to the hotel at 1 pm just to confirm that we're all set for dinner. They smile and say 'yes' and that we have a reservation for 7:30. We're in our room waiting for dinner during a torrential downpour and water starts to stream through the AC unit grille in the ceiling. We put out buckets and towels to sop it all up. We head over to the hotel desk on our way to our reservation and mention the water. No apologies - just thanks for the heads up. Go to the restaurant and we are led right past the main dining room (which is stunning) and into a far less formal room and handed stained paper menus with things like lobster rolls and hamburgers on it. I'm thinking WTF?? Turns out that they must have thought they could pacify us with feeding us dinner in their 'bistro', not the full monty. Maybe they thought that we wouldn't notice? A pretty low move on their part - not even telling us. We made a stink and the manager that evening pulled it together and we eventually sat down for the dinner which we had made reservations for two months prior. It was truly amazing, but after so much unnecessary drama. End of the day they discounted us $150 on a nearly $2000 two night stay to cover both the water pouring through the ceiling and the restaurant nonsense. If you don't go through what we went through it would be a truly lovely experience I'm sure. We had a very good weekend in spite of the issues, but we won't be back to White Barn Inn. read more

The staff here did everything possible to make my parent's 50th anniversary a huge success. They upgraded my parents room, created customized menus with their names and anniversary date, helped me with flowers and added personal touches. I can't thank you enough for treating my parents like royalty on their big day. When my parents called me they were gushing about how amazing the food and whole experience was.
