You can sit outside on the patio overlooking the vineyard or even sit in the vineyard. You order your wine selection in the gift shop that also offers small plates. They have many different wine varieties and Andy who worked there gave us a detailed description of each one. Unfortunately he was also a sale person wanting you to spend money which was a turnoff. We each elected to do a tasting of 3 different wines - all reds .Unfortunately the beautiful setting was better than any of the wines we tasted. We walked away disappointed as we really wanted to buy a bottle to support a local business but we just didn't care for any of the 6 we tried. If you are in the area and want to relax and enjoy the beautiful landscape of Galena Territory,give them a try and maybe you will find a wine that you will like.

In fact the flavor was so offensive to my pallet that I didn't finish any of the three varieties recommended. I really enjoy dry wines and stayed clear of the sweet so maybe that was the issue. The service was good and the girl helping us was friendly. They offer 4 or 5 samples for free or you can get 10 for a small fee. I felt like the wines were more on the sweeter side overall, but they were enjoyable and it was a nice break from driving/sightseeing. There's plenty of seating with areas in front and back when you walk in. There are two fireplaces in the front seating areas with TVs. It was early in the day so no fires, but they did have football on which I'm sure the men appreciated! They also had a cute shop with a variety of snacks, shirts, and whimsical gift-shop type stuff for sale. Great place. Definitely worth stopping in.

I had a glas of Eclipse which tasted delightful, similar to grocery store wine at this price. Do yourself a favor and skip this one for now! There are much better wineries available in Iowa. It appears ownership is trying to safe everywhere! Noteworthy: It's 3/4 mile gravel to the property. To no fault of their own, the gnats & bees were out swarming outside, so seating outside diverted us inside. They told us that we needed to stop by Barrel Head Winery because it was the best winery they visited on their route. We took their advice and we were so glad we did! Upon arrival, we noticed that they were closed, but the owners, John and Kathy Burns, opened their doors for us. They not only did they open for us, but they took time to give us a tour and let us taste their amazing wine. John & Kathy did not charge for tastings, unlike many of the other wineries, which is a PLUS in my book! We are not wine connoisseurs, but John and Kathy helped us learn a thing or two about what to look for in a good wine. We spent a good two hours at their establishment and it was the most fun we had all weekend. My husband and I will be life long customers of Barrel Head Winery.
