We moved into our home about 10 years ago and started using Whempy's to service and clean our wood burning comment from year one. The last two years we had them out we must have gotten the lazy guy with hurt feet who doesn't want to climb onto the roof that many others are talking about here because my wife said that all he did was vacuum out the firebox. Every year we were told that the chimney looked just fine and then they sold us a bottle of Creosote cleaner to "keep it nice" they told us. This year we decided to have an inspection done by another company (actually two) and were told that our chimney tiles were devastated and that there had been recent fires in our flu and were close to having a two-story house fire. Now after two inspectons, several estimates and almost 20 thousand dollars later, we have had the tiles torn out, masonry work done, a steel liner installed and a stove insert put in instead of the complete firebox rebuild. But this company, Whempys, had told us for years that our chimney was in good shape. Need I say more? If you are reading this review, stay away from Whempys at all costs. Your life and your home could be put at risk by using this company. And if you're Whempys, we still have the receipts as does our insurance company who had to help us out on this one. A lawyer we consulted with laughed at how you thought you were being slick be leaving the year dates off of the invoice receipts. good thing that we keep great financial records. Avoid Whempy's at all costs. 1st experience (if I had remembered this experience, there wouldn't have been a 2nd experience but this was 3-4 years ago and I had forgotten about it). The technician came into the house and looked up inside the chimney and then did a visual inspection from my deck. Never went up on the roof. Said everything looked good. Six to eight months later, I get a proposal in the mail for masonry work they were recommending. 6-8 months AFTER the tech said everything looked good. 2nd experience - I called for a chimney inspection for our church. I clearly explained that it was 2 1/2 to 3 stories tall and that we had a roof hatch for access. A technician showed up (actually on time) and did a visual inspection FROM THE PARKING LOT - 25' from the actual building. When I asked was ready to go up on the roof, he said "oh no, I'm not going up there - my feet hurt". He was on-site for 10-15 minutes max and promised that "the office" would get back to me. Despite 2 follow-up calls to the office -- no response. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. read more

Didn't show up for the appointment. I called 15m after the set 8-12 timeframe that was confirmed and was told I wasn't on the schedule. I noted that it was confirmed via email on 11.1.23, but was told that in the time the gentleman on the phone had been working there, he never checked emails. The website has a 'contact us' portion that requires an email and that's how the service was scheduled. I was offered other days, but can't continue to change my work schedule to accommodate (especially if they don't show up). read more

I can also tell you that NO vacuum ever made it inside my house, as I was present for your visit. I recently had the chimney serviced and, judging by the amount of use our chimney has had, the technician agreed it hadn't been cleaned thoroughly. Perhaps you've improved your processes over recent years but that doesn't make my claims false and your response hasn't rectified my experience with your company. My opinion stands and I can NOT recommend Whempys chimney services. read more

We used Whempys for years... This time he cleaned the chimney like it had a liner and ran out the door and done in 10 minutes. Poor service. He was to pull out wood stove, examine and clean. Instead, inserted brush and cleaned only minimally. read more

Beware of this company --Whempys Chimney Service A rude female called me today to say I owed them $115 from a service 10 months ago. When I called them for service last January, I told them the brand of direct vent fireplace that was in need of repair. However, when the tech showed up he said they don't service that brand and left. Now 10 months later trying to charge for work they did not do. No letters and no calls in 10 months seems like a scam. 12/01/2019 UPDATE: From last call, manager said she would remove the amount due. Now today, 6 weeks later, same rude lady calls again to try and get me to pay. Another example of how this company is a scam and doesn't follow through. read more

After calling to notify them that no one had showed on the scheduled afternoon, Whempy's offered a $20 discount and got someone there first thing the next day. An afternoon is worth more than $20 and it's troubling they didn't have any way of knowing that that the chimney sweep simply didn't show. But at least they tried. 3-stars for that. If you do decide to try your luck, ask for Bob Kelley to be your service man. He's the one they scheduled (the one who actually came) and was great. read more

Called and scheduled an appointment 1 month prior, and was given a 4-hour time window. The technician, JAMES, called and said he was on his way and would arrive 1.5 hours BEFORE the scheduled time window. Discussed that access to the home would be available ONLY during the SCHEDULED 4-hour time window. He indicated that he finished his other appointments early and that we were next on the list. He arrived at the house over an hour early and would not honor the 4-hour appointment window time. He left without performing any service or evaluation. Called the office contemporaneously and spoke with the "manager", who offered no resolution, other than to say "you're located further north than we usually travel and the tech is headed south for the rest of the appointments." We immediately canceled the appointment due to the unprofessional service we received from the manager and the technician, James. Would NOT recommend this company. read more

This place is TERRIBLE! We called to have them give us an estimate on inserting a steel liner and changing our fireplace from gas back to wood burning. Another company said our chimney tiles were cracked from a fire, so we were getting estimates from a few companies. They told us the estimate was free, and they would give us a second opinion on the cracked tiles. The technician came, and had no idea why he was there. We told him that we wanted to change our fireplace from gas back to wood and put in a stainless steel liner. He said, "No you don't, gas is better." We said, yes, we do, that is why you are here. Then he stuck his head in and said, "Just rip these logs out and start burning wood in there." So, we told him he was there to give us a second opinion on the cracked tiles. He stuck his head up there again and said, "Oh yeah, the tiles are cracked." Then, he said, "Well, they had me scheduled for a chimney cleaning, let me look up the cost." He took no measurements, didn't do what we asked, and then tried to charge us for a FREE service. Are you kidding me!? We never got an estimate (surprise), and when I called to complain they didn't care at all. So, if you want someone to come out, not know why they're there, and then try to charge you for a free service, and on top of that have terrible, unapologetic customer service, this is the place for you. Otherwise, go with Blackburn or New Buck. Blackburn has been to our house twice and they are always professional and know why they are there. We have had good luck with New Buck as well, and they are a little less expensive than Blackburn. read more

We hired Whempy's to do a chimney sweep and tell us if it was safe to convert our fireplace from gas to wood-burning. Instead of cleaning the chimney, the guy pulled out all the gas logs and swept the fireplace, but did not clean the chimney. My husband could have done the work he did in twenty minutes. The chimney was still filthy afterwards. When I called Whempy's to complain the guy I talked to was not very nice and said they'd clean my chimney if I paid them over a hundred dollars again to do it. Recommended by my builder for installing a chimney liner. Whempy's was clearly experienced in this type of job. They explained the root cause of the problem necessitating a chimney liner, provided a prompt and competitive estimate, outlined exactly what would be done and gave informative answers to my questions. The work was done on time with no issues. I would highly recommend Whempy's and will use them in future. The other local chimney company I contacted also gave an estimate, but gave vague answers to questions, didn't seem to have any experience with the particular job and pretty much said they didn't want the work. read more
