Well I thought I left a review, but I guess I didn't so here goes. Let's forget about the time management and all that for now. They always quote you one to two weeks when in fact they probably mean 4-6 weeks. Why they do that I have no idea. Maybe it's simpler to tell everyone the same thing rather than actually knowing how long it will take. But car shops take a while for custom work, I understand that as I have been modifying and working on cars for over 10 years. Part of the biz.
Anyway...where this place failed me is in pure lack of common sense in what they say they are experts at. I had two jobs for them:
1) powdercoat two VOLK CE28 to match two brand new ones (Mag Blue) It's a difficult metallic bluish color and I knew it was difficult. I asked the owner himself "Can you match that?" He said sure no problem. So fast forward 4 weeks later I go to pick up the rims, at first was happy with the job until I got the wheels into the sun at the tire mounting place. The two I had them paint were purple. The color was close, but not close enough to run on any car I would drive around. So I drive back to Wheel Techniques, explain to them that it doesn't match. The owner brings out the guy that painted them and the guy said "They are pretty close", then I proceed to show them in the sun. The owner says "well those two match", which is when I told him "those are the new ones that you were supposed to match the other two with". Having dug himself a hole he offers to paint all four whatever color I wanted. So OK that's reasonable, I appreciate that especially after driving down 50 miles for nothing.
Fast forward another 4 weeks and they painted the rims the color I wanted, unfortunately for me they FORGOT TO CLEAR one of the barrels of the rims. 1 out of 4 rims did not have clear coat on the inside barrel. Epic fail and attention to detail is obviously not there. They obviously also did a very cheap (thin) powdercoat on this set since they were doing them at the price I paid to paint two wheels.
The powder is so thin in some spots it is lighter (side of spokes). The owner even KNEW about the thin coat and told me to "have mounting place put tape around the lip during the mount, so that the paint doesn't come off". The mounting place said that was absurd and that a proper powdercoat should not just flake off from mounting.
Okay now that we have the wheels out of the way, they were already working another job for me (my mistake I know) before I realized how crappy they were.
2) Powdercoat my MIVEC evo valve cover.
The orange peel on the most visible part of the cover (the front) was completely horrible. The person spraying the valve cover used absolutely no technique at all when spraying the cover and oversprayed the crap out of it.
Secondly they rendered my valve cover completely useless. These geniuses decided to sand blast my valve cover, which in most cases I would have been okay with, but they DID NOT COVER the bottom of the valve cover. So now there is SAND in the welded baffles of the valve cover. Last time I checked, valve train and sand do not mix so well. So instead of risking a $5000 motor, this cover becomes a paper weight. The owner again knows that the sand is in there and says "just clean it with soap and water". Are you kidding me? How about you not be an idiot and not spray sand into the baffles of my valve cover to begin with and do a professional job. I dunked that valve cover more than 20 times and sand was still coming out. I wasn't going to risk my motor and the turbo for the amount I lost (250 for cover itself and paint) so I just said eff it and gave up.
The lack of skill and knowledge and general lack of care for the customer and their parts, money and time just takes this place to a whole new level of suck. My threshold is pretty high for car shops as far as sucking goes, but these guys just leave a horrible taste in my mouth, kind of like having sand in your mouth. Yah like that. All in all I'm out 600 bucks to these guys for their "services" and know not to go back. I have seen some good work from them, but I believe you either have to ask for the right person to do the work (not a noob) or know them. If you are a regular joe bringing in a set of 2000 dollar wheels, they could give two shits about you.
Edit: In response to the offer to come back. Hey you know what, mistakes happen I realize that. But that's the problem I came back multiple times and there were still mistakes. I am not sure if the guy handling my parts was an amateur or perhaps not one of your more experienced guys, but honestly if you wouldn't put the parts on your personal car, don't hand it back to the customer. That's a good rule of thumb. In both cases of both jobs you knew the work was not up to par, but you told me to have the wheel mounter "tape the lip" and to have me "clean my valve cover with soap and water". Did I not pay enough to have a proper/complete job done? read more
