The slow cooker times range from 4-13 hours depending on what you've purchased. They've got a large variety to choose from and it's worth the cost. I ordered about 12 meals for $187. So...my husband and I went to Booths Corner to check it out. Stumbled upon What A Croc and thought it was a great concept and we are all about supporting small business, so we decided to check it out. We chose the 2 servings Chicken Pot Pie Stew. I figured $22.00 ($11.00 per serving) to feed just my husband and I was reasonable, considering the high cost of most goods. As we were making our way to the counter, that's when the woman working there asked if we had ever tried these before. I told her it was our first time. She then asked me if I had a round crockpot or an oval one. I told her we had an oval one and she said "you need three servings then or else it will burn". I was taken back by her attitude and it didn't sit well with me. So I responded stating that 3 servings was too much for us and that we wanted 2. She kept insisting that we get 3 servings and then began schooling me on the science of evaporation from food in a crockpot. After going back and forth I got irritated and told her that we only need 2 servings and the more she pushed me I was going to put the bag back in the freezer and leave. She changed gears and grabbed crockpot liners and told me that if we use the oval crockpot to put the contents of the bag into the liner and tie it up and then place in crockpot. I told her I had liners at home. My question is this...why offer serving sizes if not all crockpots will cook the smaller portions properly? Also, if there was a simple solution such as the liner, why was she aggressively pushing us to buy 3 servings at a higher price? Not cool. We aren't idiots and we definitely do not appreciate being treated as such. We put the 2 servings in the oval crockpot without a liner and it didn't burn!! Imagine that! We weren't pleased with the meal either. It was bland, the potatoes had a strange texture and it had absolutely no flavor...even with adding salt and pepper. Time.... and the owners are just super duper nice. Plus free shipping when you spend $99, like fast and efficient shipping, and all you need is a small freezer chest. You can easily & reasonably feed a family with zero prep many times over with room to spare. Our favorites are the chicken pot pie stew, meatballs, veggie entrees and loaded soup. Save your money, if they are wondering why there are not making money they should try their food. 1 portion or serving of Teriyaki Chicken = 1 small piece of chicken and sauce. 1 cup of rice and 1 cup of broccoli a very cheap meal that cost me $14.99. In my opinion it about $10.00 over prices. All they had to do was put a better portion of food in the package and I would have ordered from them each week. I have ordered from What A Crock several times. They are a lifesaver during busy sports seasons, when recovering from surgery, and when remodeling my kitchen. The chicken marsala and the sausage meatballs are fantastic. I don't eat red meat, but the rest of my family really likes the Uptown Beef Stew. I always have at least one of their meals in my freezer. These meals have very little salt in them so can be bland if you don't adjust it. I actually prefer it that way, so that we can salt to taste. I just throw some salt in the crock pot when I turn it on, and it's fine. I do think that the rice and pasta portions that come with the meals are on the small side, so I make extra. Their customer service is great. They are very responsive, and I even saw when I placed an order that the owner had made a note that I had a problem on my prior order, and to make sure that everything was triple checked. This is a great small business in Delaware County that I will continue to support! read more

Don't sell me something advertised as a meat that is not the predominant meat in the product!!!!!!!!

I was looking for a way to provide meals for friends of ours who were dealing with some medical issues. Came across What A Crock online and thought this would be perfect. Placed the order for the Customer Favorites on a Wednesday, close to the cut off time, and figured it would not get put together and shipped until Thursday. We were within the one-day delivery zone, so Friday would be fine. Got a notice that day that the order was already picked up by FedEx and would be delivered by end of day Thursday. I was impressed with the quick service. On Thursday, I got a notice that FedEx had delayed the shipment and it would not arrive until Friday. I sent our friends a note saying it would not be delivered, and let the company know as well. I got an email back that day from What A Crock, apologizing for the delay, but that it should still be fine when it arrived. If there were any problems to let them know. Long story short, it arrived the next day, but was not completely frozen. I do believe this was due to FedEx letting it sit in its warehouse for an extra day under who knows what condition. Our friends inspected the package and told the driver that it was partially defrosted. He called his supervisor and they were told they could refuse the package. Little did we know that by refusing the package, it was no longer on FedEx that it arrived late and partially defrosted, so no refund for What A Crock for the FedEx delay. I called the company to let them know what happened. The first person I spoke with apologized profusely, and said they would send a new package out on Monday. I then received a call and email from the Justin West, one of the owners, to confirm what had transpired, and he again apologized (even though I feel this was not What A Crock's fault). He said that a replacement package would be shipped on Monday, and if there were any problems to let him know. He even provided his personal cell phone number. The package did arrive on Tuesday, completely frozen. However, I did notice that in tracking the package, it was almost delayed again by FedEx. I was extremely impressed with the customer service and their desire to make things right. I do feel What A Crock went above and beyond. I checked in on the couple, and they had made the Chicken Marsala. They were very pleased with the taste and ease of cooking. I ordered the 2-3 portion size for them, and they said it was a lot of food. Looking forward to ordering some meals for my husband and myself in the near future. I had passed this place on my way home from work many times and finally decided to try it out. I am so glad I did! The meal that I picked for the first time was the Uptown Beef Stew. It was phenomenal and tasted as good if not better than what I have made in the past! I was skeptical of course because I love to cook but I was not disappointed! My family loved it as well! There was a perfect balance of ingredients and seasoning and not overly salted. The amount of beef was just right and was very flavorful. First of all, I'd like to personally thank the owners for creating the Yelp listing this week so I didn't have to. This place has been on my radar for quite some time. My wife has seen it in her work travels, and told me about it. I have several friends who have been here too. As a family that relies on their Crock Pot, this place is a godsend for sure. First of all, I must say that the owners of this establishment may be some of the nicest business owners I've come across in Delco. You really do want to root for them to succeed after meeting them, and they bend over backwards to accommodate your needs. I enjoyed talking to them on my visit. But you get stars from me based on the food. Let's get right to it. I have tasted two of the dishes so far: Mexican Chicken Fiesta and Jambalaya. They create the dishes daily from scratch, and package them extremely well for you to cook in your pot at home with detailed instructions. These dishes have a chef's touch for sure. You can tell that in the flavors, which are bold and intense. I can tell you that I'm going to be back for that Mexican Chicken. It goes tremendously well with some sour cream and cheese in a tortilla. My wife and I devoured it happily yesterday. If you like Mexican food, this is your dish. Today, we tried the Jambalaya. The flavor really kicks your behind. It's bold and hearty, which if you tried to recreate at home, you probably wouldn't get it as flavorful in a Crock Pot. It's not easy to get flavors that bold in a Crock Pot, so for that I give them kudos. Now, was it perfect? Well, there's one thing that doesn't seem to be perfect. They use diced white meat chicken in their dishes. This tends to come out a little bit dry. I mean, I know how tough it is to cook boneless chicken breast in general, so I get that it's not easy. It's not as noticeable in the Mexican dish as there are a lot of other things going on in that dish to compensate. But it was really noticeable in the Jambalaya. The flavors of the sausage, shrimp, and ham were more than enough to complement this dish, but that just made the chicken stand out a bit. I still ate it happily though. But if you asked me to chose between the two, I'm choosing the Mexican chicken. It really knocked our socks off. I'm betting the Jambalaya with some dark meat in it would rock my world though. I still have more to try (two more different dishes remain in my freezer as I write this) and I will be back to try others. I consider the prices reasonable for what you get. Sure, you can make half decent Crock Pot meals at home a little cheaper, but chances are you won't be able to do it nearly as well. It's clear they know what they're doing here. This is a great concept! We tried the uptown stew tonight. I just had to cut open the bag and put it in the crock pot. I needed to add some salt to get it to my liking. I think that's a good thing because I hate when dishes are over salted and I can't save them. 2 portions fed me, my husband, my 3 year old and my 1 year old.... yes, both kids loved it too! I discovered this mom and pop business by way of a client I was working with. As we were discussing his kitchen remodel project one of the topics that usually comes up is how you will survive without a working kitchen for x amount of time. Well my client, a single, older retired vet informed me that he had been going to this little shop called What A Crock who specializes in frozen dinners for your crock pot. Hmmmm, go on... The proprietors are both chefs who cook a variety of dishes using fresh, locally sourced products that they then freeze and packaged with use by dates and instructions. Since I was working pretty late hours back them I dropped by to check it out. The store, located in Chester, was small but well organized and staffed with very friendly people including the owner who once I explained how I happened upon his business gave me a stack of menus to give out to my clients in exchange for a discount on my future purchases. Okay, yes, I like to network that way. I have been going to them ever since and they have also opened up a large stall in Booths Corner which was great for them and me. Some of my favs are: The Uptown Beef Stew, The Chicken Pot Pie, Grandmas Sunday Gravy and Sausage and the New Orleans Braised Beef. Set your crockpot to low, pop the contents in and you have a lovely meal waiting for you after a hard days work. Two notes though, I skip the thawing part if I want the meal ready by the time I get home. I find this to be a useless step and sometimes the vegetables are too roughly chopped. The stuffed bell peppers was the best entree out of the five I tried. Definitely give that one a shot if you're going to try the company out. I liked the beef stew as well and didn't find it bland (as others have stated). I'm leaving this review at 2 stars as there seems to be some communication errors with this company. They claimed they notified me of a snowstorm and that is why my food was defrosted when it arrived. I received no such correspondence and even sent attachments to the owner of the ONLY correspondence we did have (a Facebook message I sent asking about my order since I didn't receive an email confirmation). Honestly, a simple "We'll make sure your food is still frozen when it arrives to you next time" would have pleased me much more than explaining why my food was defrosted when it arrived (and then lying about correspondence about a snowstorm). I understand this is a small business and I hate to lower their entire rating based on my experience alone, but I also try to review establishments honestly on here. I really had high hopes for these crockpot meals. Great idea! I bought two meals...Uptown Beef Stew + Chicken Pot Pie Stew. Both totaling in $38, which I thought was a lot of money. The signs on the freezer say the price per portion - most have 2 portions so plan on doubling the price shown. I can buy my own ingredients for less than that and have leftovers for days. Not only were they very expensive, they both had one thing in common...VERY BLAND AND WATERY. My husband, who literally eats anything and thinks it's good, even commented on it. We just had the beef stew tonight hoping it would change our minds but we both said the exact same thing. The beef chunks were dried out and the carrots had a weird taste to them. I ordered probably $200 worth of food in total. I loved their philly cheesesteak dip in Philly at the Reading Terminal Market. My husband does like most of their meals- the New Orleans Braised Beef, pumpkin and apple soup, etc. but when I really look closely at the Nutritional Information, the New Orleans Braised Beef as an example has 18G of Trans fat (I didn't even know food sold had trans fat anymore in this day and age) and over 105% of your daily saturated fat intake. I cannot speak highly enough of What A Crock meals. The concept....fully prepared, frozen meals you need only reheat, is a simple one. Getting it right is the hard part! But What A Crock has mastered excellent customer service, rapid shipping AND delicious recipes. Boxes are shipped with dry ice and arrive fully frozen with instructions. While I am quite partial to the sausage meatballs with "grandma's gravy" (red sauce) and their potato soup, my son raves about their pulled chicken and beef stew. They've got beef, chicken, pork, vegetarian options, soups, dips, desserts and sides. This working mama appreciates a quality home cooked meal that she doesn't have to make! Had I still been relying heavily on crock potted meals I would have beaten a path to their door on opening day. Not in this situation anymore it was however on my radar since it opened a few months back My visit on 5th of March,2015 was a pleasant experience. What a menu! Many items from wish to chose so I imagine this would be a godsend to families. All items are made from scratch and vacuum sealed and stored in their subzero freezer. Prices are reasonable. As a previous Eliter stated the owners could not be any friendlier. From the guy shoveling the snow outside who made it his business to ensure my safety on this snowy day, to the 2 guys inside( sorry forgot names) these people are pumped about their products and providing the community with good, home cooked products to the area. I purchased 2 Beef Stews and broccoli which fed 4 people well.I even heard a few "yummie noises" emanating from their lips while eating dinner that evening. It could not have been any easier. Follow the directions and you come home to a fresh, home made meal in your crockpot. Great new concept in oft forgotten Southeastern Delco. Give WHAT A CROCK a chance. I found What A Crock through an internet search and ship my orders to CT. I have always made home-cooked meals but with 4 teenagers in the house and working full time, it has been very difficult to maintain that standard. Enter What A Crock... there are 6 of us and I am the only vegan - the rest are carnivores ;-) I order the 4-6 portions and they have always been plenty. Admittedly, I sometimes add an additional can of tomatoes or rice or noodles or something to stretch it a bit but we would be fine with the servings provided as well. At first, I got non-vegetarian dishes and added an additional starch/salad/whatever for myself. However, I did get the Veg Out bundle and everyone in the house loved it so now I get mostly veg dishes. Also, Justin (the owner) is always responsive and helpful with any questions. The most favorite dish in the house (among the carnivores) is the Buffalo Mac-n-Cheese. Everything is fresh, flavorful, and easy to make. I love always having something in the freezer that I know the kids can make if need be that is "home cooked." I highly recommend them! read more

It actually makes me sad to have to write this. I'm a big fan of supporting local businesses and try my best to do so. However, after having given What a Crock every opportunity to do address the issues I have experienced, nothing has happened. It can only lead me to the conclusion that they just don't care. The sad part is, overall, this was a great solution for someone like me and with one exception (see below), the food has been very tasty. Below a is a brief summary of what I have encountered: (1) Basic Nutritional Info One of my first experiences was in talking to the manager of their store in Brookhaven and I asked about Nutritional Info. I am working with a dietician, and like many other people, I need to know what the nutritional info is on these meals, in order to plan accordingly and ensure I am staying within the parameters of my diet in terms in Calories, Fat, Sugar, Sodium, etc. The response I got (summarizing, not a quote): It's so hard because we cook in big batches. My thoughts on this: It's just math! Take the total from the product label (even fresh products have nutritional info readily available) for your entire batch. Measure your portions of each product and divide. Too hard? (2) The Bad Meal - BBQ Ribs I've tried several dishes from their menu, and with this one exception, they were all good. Wow, though - what an exception! These ribs looked terrible, they smelled terrible and I was able to take ONE bite and had to throw them away, as they tasted as bad as they smelled and looked. I expressed this experience to a cashier in their store, who was apologetic and ensured me nothing is more important than the quality of their food. This employee took my name, phone number and said the manager would be in touch. I was given a $5 gift card at that time. What happened after that? Nothing! No phone call, no follow-up - radio silence, folks! A $5 Gift Card is barely 50% of what the I spent on the bad meal. (3) Cooking Instructions Seem to be inconsistent, at best. I've had meals some with no instructions what-so-ever. Side dishes that come with a meal, such as Rice or Pasta, is hit or miss. Some have all the needed info (eg. Boil rice in bag, 10 - 12 mins), other have sketchy instructions (eg. Boil rice in bag) (Hint: The amount of time is missing). Pasta sides never had any instructions, what-so-ever, on them. I realize this may sounds stupid to some, but if you know nothing about cooking, these instructions are important! Surprisingly, a business of this type may tend to attract people like me, that know nothing about cooking. (4) Loyalty Program & Discounts They have several "loyalty" programs that run through their app. Discount coupons come out fairly frequently, along with other discounts sent by Square (their payment processor). Don't get too excited though? It is difficult to actually use these discounts. Allow me to explain one example: One of the loyalty programs they have through their app is a facebook check-in. In other words, check into their store on Facebook, while you are at the store, a total of 6 times and you get a free meal. I reached six times with my last order. So, I expected to receive my free meal. No dice! I placed my order through their website. So, here I am, standing in their lobby with a $45 order in my hands and their manager telling me "You need to buy something else to redeem your coupon because it doesn't work with on-line orders." Out of frustration, I respond, "Just forget it". Does their manager stop? No! She continues, in almost preaching manner, speaking to me as one would scold a small child: "Well, I'm just telling you what I need to make this work". What you need? I'm the customer! I'm spending $250 (on average) per month in your store. and you're more interested in having an argument than honoring your promotion? Wow! That's good business right there! How's this for a solution: Redeem the coupon (something code they punch in on the app to redeem it) and I walk out with my meal. You then have your struggle with your POS System on your time, instead of making it my problem and telling me what "I need to do to make it work for them". How's that for a quick, customer oriented, solution? (5) Customer Service (or the lack thereof) Despite the #1 - #3 (above), which I found ways to work around, the overall theme of not caring about the customers, the experience and being more concerned with being "right", then doing "right" is what finally broke my back! After #4 (above), I emailed both owners about these issues. It's been over a week, with no response, what-so-ever. That just confirms to me, that they truly do not care about their customers, at all! After providing 4 separate opportunities for them to resolve this, enough is enough - I had to tell my side of this and hopefully save another consumer to hassle of having to deal with this! read more

The staff is very friendly and helpful, but other than that, I am fairly disappointed in my experience at What a Crock. I got the Jambalaya, which contained overcooked rice (even though I followed all of the cooking instructions), very little shrimp and sausage, and even less flavor. I also got the Chicken, Spinach and Artichokes meal, which was similarly flavorless. The macaroni and cheese was also quite bland. I still have the garlic mashed potatoes in my freezer, but I don't have very high hopes. The crock pot liners were the best purchase I made there. I will be purchasing those again, but probably not at What A Crock. read more

I'm sorry I have to write such a critical review, because I, like many others have said, really do want small, local businesses to succeed. Having said that, my experience at What-A-Crock was pretty terrible. I'm just getting around to writing a review now, but I visited in August 2016. As a first time customer I didn't know much about the business or how it all worked. The woman behind the counter had a bit of an attitude answering my questions and she kept having to run in the back because of loud metalic crashing noises that kept happening. No explainantion, but it was very noisy back there and made it hard to order. In addition, it was ungodly hot in the customer order area with no windows, AC or fan to speak of. Despite all this, I managed to order the slow cooked beef and took it home looking forward to a delicious dinner. I prepared the meal as instructed. Started it in the morning and planned to eat it for dinner. When my girlfriend and I came home from work we plated it and sat down to try it. It was really really bad. Not only was there almost no seasoning but the meat and gravy had an aftertaste--hard to describe but somewhere between a dirty sock and rancid oil. The owners are awesome. The idea - unique. The service in the shop - excellent. Here is my experience with my first Crock meal. Ordered the Cajun Beef for two. Essentially it was two pieces of a pot roast in a gravy (didn't taste very Cajun), two portions of rice and beans and an asparagus. Only the beef goes in the crock pot. The rice and asparagus were in bags and are cooked in boiling water 15 minutes before the beef is done. I was told allowing for 12 hours on low for the meat will make it very tender when you are ready to eat. The meat was tasty. Enjoyed that very much. The rice was ok.
