This spot is not part of the Texas based chain, Whataburger (founded in Corpus Christi in 1950), nor the small What-A-Burger chain that started in Newport News in 1951! This spot is one of 4 remaining locations of a chain begun in 1956 in the Concord area. The number of locations maybe reached 14 or so, rising and falling as spots came and went. There are 2 locations in Concord and 1 in Kannapolis, in addition to this one. This one Is newer and in a little better shape, the other three are worn to the point of shabby. This is as old school drive in as you will find, with curb service, with ordering boxes that you can barely talk thru. The menu has some variety, but this place is about burgers, dogs, fries, Cherry-Lemon Sundrop, or Witch Doctor drink. This place, from reviews, is as inconsistent as the other three - and I've eaten at the other three. We got the What-A-Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and pickles, a Footlong with mustard, chili, and onions, along with FF, a Witch Doctor, and Sundrop. The burger and hot dog were solid, but not spectacular, and the FF were simply awful, cold with no flavor. And yet I enjoyed this experience, the nostalgia raises up the food and the moment. Are you going to get the most amazing food and service here? Probably not. Can you get a pickle soda and a giant giant cherry lemon sundrop? Hell yeah. Do they have the best hush puppies according to my 11 year old? Also yes. At this point I don't know if I love the idea of this what-a-burger more than the actual lunch we get here once a year, but I come back faithfully and I think my kids would start a mutiny if I skipped it. I love the corn dog, I have the palate of a raccoon if I'm being honest so take it with a grain of salt that I also really like the burger since I get extra pickles. I just really like pickles, okay? I try not to interact with the staff too much, there's a general vibe that they're one bad interaction away from a meltdown and I don't want to contribute to anyone's bad day. I ordered two triple meat Whataburgers with an upsize on fries and a lemonade. One of the burgers had grilled onions and bacon (they charge per slice of bacon, by the way). The meal was okay -- it didn't really wow me, but it also wasn't bad. The food was decent for what it was. What I really like, though, is that this fast-food chain is open 24 hours, which is super convenient for late-night meals. I ordered 4 meals from this place and they forgot the chicken tender meal with fries and then forgot the second order of fries also (3) 4oz. Ranches. I called to get a replacement or a refund for these items and got no where with the manager on duty the guy that took the order over the phone seemed like he didn't know what he was doing or even take a simple order. This place is terrible. When people say "old fashioned" burger and fries, they mean flavorless, cheap garbage to fill the hole in your gullet and that's about it. Burger buns are soggy, burger patties are cooked to hell and back because they use the cheapest ground beef I've ever encountered and the fries are basically cafeteria quality and taste like the fryer grease hasn't been changed since 1955. Went here over the weekend for the first time after visiting the antique mall a few minutes away. The food was good. We ordered a What-a-burger with fries and a fish sandwich with hush puppies. Not out of this world but really tasty. The atmosphere is great and you can tell it's been there awhile but it's a welcome change of pace from the current burger restaurants on every corner. Sorry ... Not the Texas Whataburger There is always a bit of confusion when talking about What-A-Burger. Folks not from the area tend to confuse it at first with the Whataburger Chain in Texas. While they were started about the same time in history, the comparison stops there. What-A-Burger is a small regional chain centered around Concord. Based on the numbering, there were at least 15 at one time but not probably less than half that. The Texas Whataburger has stores running into the hundreds. It's still a bit of nostalgia. When I was growing up in the 50's and 60's, drive in's were popular. Even Shoney's was a drive in or at least in Asheville. This still has the drive in station although you can go in a dine inside which in either very hot or very cold weather is an pleasant option. Pulled in and pushed the button on the intercom. At first I was not sure it was working but someone finally answered. I placed my order for the signature What-A-Burger which is a Quarter Pound Burger with all the fixings. Side of Fries and Small Iced Tea to go. What seems like a while, a lady came out with my food. I've never seen a car hop in her sixty's until today but she was good. Burgers are made to order so I guess I should be more patient. Burger was surprisingly good. Meat was a bit dry and they were more than generous with the condiments but still good. Fries were a bit under cooked but came out very hot. Should have known better but did not clarify 1/2 and 1/2 on the tea so it was super sweet. What-A-Mistake! So my husband wanted to have a "What a Burger" experience and it was very disappointing. It is set up like a rinky dink Sonic outside and inside it could use a good wash and overhaul. We did decide to go in and order because we were 3 adults and 2 tween girls and none of us had ordered from this establishment before. I brought it to their attention and was questioned as if I was trying to "steal" a piece of cheese. The young woman that took our order made a mistake and insisted that we didn't ask for cheese on the burger. Okay, lady let's get past this.....how can I get said cheese on the burger......well that'll be 52 cents for their mistake? Ok I pay and I am basically handed an almost frozen piece of cheese on my now cold burger. Needless to say I didn't end up eating it because I was just annoyed by the whole situation. Customer service is definitely not their forte and the food was nothing special. My husband had also wanted to order a BBQ plate because they advertise it on a neon sign but they were out of BBQ?! What-A-Burger was a childhood staple. I often visited with my grandparents and was not satisfied until I was drinking a Witch Doctor. I have moved on from the Witch Doctors, but still love a great burger. When it comes to the food these days, I'm afraid I have to rate it as 'A-ok.' I ordered a single What-A-Burger with cheese and picked at the fries and onion rings the others in my party ordered. The burger tasted very good, but looked like it had been thrown together from a distance by a frisbee golfer. Upon rebuilding my burger, I noticed it had almost half an onion on it. I absolutely love onion on burgers (can't imagine them without) but holy onion breath, Batman. In the interest of not having my breath offend everyone in a 50 mile radius, and not eating an onion burger for lunch, I removed most of it during the rebuild process. I feel like the WAB we all grew up with is just gone. They are using this awful white slaw instead of the proven red slaw that has been used for decades. Some things grow old gracefully, others fight it every step of the way. The Hancock Center in Chicago well represents the first case, What-A-Burgers in the Carolinas the second. Rather than going the Faux-Retro route with mass produced nostalgia WAB seems to have stood its ground and let time pass on by. Don't misunderstand, it's not a bad place and the food is close enough: 1/4-pound burger + lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, pickle w/ small fires and beverage is less than $7.00, but the offer is dated. A quarter pound burger used to was a big deal, but it's standard fare now (kid-size in some venues) and that it tastes like beef only aggravates matters. Fries are fries unless they're a godawful mess and these weren't; a handful of crinkle-cuts lightly salted, ketchup on the side. Regardless, a 12oz Coke should have more fizzy-water than ice. If your heart is set on a burger that tastes like something else (legumes, citrus, fish...?) or you're hankering for a tired take on spuds this probably isn't your place. If you want to visit a simpler place and time (and palate) you could do plenty worse. If you grew up on these, more power to you. read more
