I remember discussing the fast food chain Whataburger with a friend some years ago, when they told me that the Charlotte metro area has our own chain called Whataburger. I was very confused and then intrigued to discover What-a-burger has been around for over 50 years, and is in no way affiliated with the well known Texas chain. It appears that there once were at least 15 given the fact that this particular restaurant is labeled as number 15, however there now appears to be only a few remaining in some of the satellite cities of Charlotte like Concord and Gastonia. These charming restaurants are like stepping into a Time Machine back to the days of 50s drive in fast food diners. I finally got the opportunity to come in for lunch. They have counter service and several small tables and booths to sit and enjoy your meal. I opted for a burger and a hot dog all the way so I could try it like they usually serve. The burger was delicious! I a nice crisp smash patty on a soft bun, very juicy. The hotdog was very good although I think next time I would get it without the slaw. I topped it all off with a cup of cheer wine that the sweet lady behind the counter was kind enough to top off for free after coming by the table and noticing I had finished mine. I love that small town friendly service and this place just radiates with it. I'm not sure what the future holds now that the Texas chain is encroaching on Charlotte. I'd love to see a world where both can exist. The Texas chain may seem new, shiny, and enticing, but I hope locals don't forget this hidden gem tucked right into the community. read more

I'm sure this is a long time Concord favorite but for someone who just moved here, I found that the burger and the onion rings were just average. The thing that really got me was being charged $.55 for water and then they passed on the credit card fee. read more

She was licking food off her fingers repetitivelyyyy without washing them yet proceeded to handle customers food and drinks. never washed them once. MLB is out in Asheville for work and I just left the doc's office with a note for the boss and only the vaguest idea of what sort of plague I'm carrying but I'm hungry and it's a nice day for a short drive in the county. Pull into a large lot on the back end of lunch and try to figure out when this ever was a drive-in: guessing pre-history. So I head in and try not to breathe on anyone because, well, plague... and request a W-A-Salisbury (plus lettuce, tomatoe, mayo, and pickles with a spear through it's head) fries and a cup of water. Head around the corner, find a table in the back and relax for a bit; my food arrives in less than ten minutes and a smiley face comes with all for a modest sum. An old fashioned honest little burger in an old timey setting that doesn't need tarted-up tomatoey-paste to sell it's product. I stopped to have lunch here a couple days ago. I had the burger that comes with chili, slaw, mustard and onions (but w/o the onions) a small tater tot, and a medium drink for $10.03. The burger was good and the tots were more like hash rounds. It was at the tail end of lunch time, so had to wait about 7 or 8 minutes for my food, but it was hot and fresh so I didn't mind. Most days I give them a four or five for fast food today the girl answering the phone was pretty short and not very pleasant on the phone. And when I picked up the order I usually give q tip to the people at the counter but I think I got the same person who answered the phone got the same kind of service very unpleasant. Couldn't wait to get to an NC Whataburger. So disappointed. Whataburger not even wrapped in paper...tissue paper. Tasteless as heck. Hotdog was hard as a rock and bun was soggie. For starters, if you're traveling through, don't confuse our What-A-Burger with the chain in Texas, Ohio etc. They dont use spicy ketchup or pimped up condiments; they make a classic burger ATW(chili, slaw, onion,mustard) or the basic lettuce, tomato and mayo. Get it however you want, made moments after you order with fresh crisp produce. Their breakfast is amazing and there's something for everyone. Chicken fingers, chuckwagon to hot dogs, and more. No non sense phone etiquette, you're always greeted with a hi sweetie or honey (they like pet names) and clean tables and restrooms. You always see someone you know or knew your folks. Ok, I am a native to this area so I grew up on What-A-Burger. Trust me I am not bragging....the restaurants in this chain are run down, not so great looking hole in the walls. The food is as far from heart healthy as you can get, and the staff.....well let's just say they are "special" and leave it at that. But, if you need your gut filled at a low price, served by someone who is glad you came in then What-A-Burger fits the bill just fine. Whenever I have guest come in from "up north" I make sure that they get to visit one. They have been known to flinch when their order is yelled back to the fry cook. I let them pull the newbie move of trying to pay with a card....not happening. But they usually do enjoy the food, especially the burgers. One thing you have to get is a large Cherry Lemon Sundrop.....best kept secret of the south!
