The crew operated with an almost robotic efficiency, assembling orders with military-like precision and not a single smile or friendly word. Within about seven minutes, my order was ready. I was handed my box without so much as a "thank you" or "have a nice day." Out in the hot July sun, I opened the styrofoam box in my car, initially impressed by the beautiful golden-fried appearance of the food. The onion rings were indeed crispy and perfectly cooked, and the hush puppies were quite nice. However, the coleslaw was disappointing, and the fish itself was nothing more than processed fish flakes formed into a patty. Everytime we go here the employees are so nice! The food is absolutely delicious and the Witch Doctors are made on point and just right!!! I can't go to what a burger without getting one. I'm also celiac and don't react to their fries and they accomodate no bun. They put my burger or chicken made to order in it's own container and on a small paper plate to absorb moisture which is fantastic! Nowhere else has done that for me. The Witchdoctors are made just the way I like them with pickle juice, pickles, and soda YUM!!!! The fries are packaged separately as well!! The food is good but the customer service is pretty awkward and unwelcoming. When you walk in, nobody greets you, like at most places. None of the staff is smiling, just kind of staring at you and waiting for your order, which I suppose is fine, just strange. The place wasn't busy at all when I went, and the food was really fresh, hot, and yummy. There was no line, and the place was very clean. While my son and I ate at a table, the staff just kind of stared us down. They have a 98.0 sanitation grade. They are cash only but they have an ATM next to the register. This place was recommended to us from a coworker and I think this place is more of a nostalgia thing than it is the best eats. I just wasn't so impressed that I would rush back. The staff is great and friendly. So absolutely no complaints there but the burger was a bit on the bland side for me. I ended up picking at mine and only eating parts of it. The fries are the business but potato fried in grease can't go wrong. Onion rings are good, they seem to be a frozen variety - but I could be wrong. If you never heard of this place (like me), then you are definitely in for a surprise. It is a small hole in the wall looking burger joint that is grungy looking from the outside and inside, however the food is actually pretty tasty. All the food is 'made to order', so everything comes out hot and fresh. It is much better tasting food than those fast food chains such as McD, BK, wendys, etc, as the food is made to order, but the classification of the food would be just one small step above those kind of establishments. Their menu is pretty available from single burgers to doubles, and even have chicken sandwiches (HOWEVER, be forewarned., chicken is not their typical, so it takes A LOT longer to cook than your typical burger). The fries were piping hot when they came out and were definitely tasty. They were not overly fried, nor overly covered in salt, which made it more desirable. This place is a great place for a quick meal, and is probably great after a long night of partying, as the 'grease' of the food will get you to the right spot. It is cash only. We rerouted here since the restaurant I really wanted to eat at seems to have gone out of business. My husband has been wanting to check this place out. Seems very popular with locals. We decided to eat in since this is not remotely close to home for us. Sat at a booth with husband and felt all eyes on us. I can blend in but my husband never could. It does not help when he wears outrageous uncoordinated gym outfits. Despite the weirdness we felt, we enjoyed our burgers. The locals chatted amongst themselves and it seems like a cool diner type place to hang out at. Burgers and fries were decent. Nothing spectacular but neither terrible. Affordable. No small talk, no pleasantries, but about business. He wasn't rude so I can respect that. After a few minutes our food arrived. My burger tasted decent. Disappointing. The burger was average at best. Ordering was a 15 ordeal. Half the people walking in aren't wearing masks correctly and there is not an easy way to avoid contact with them. Not many people know of this drive-in "chain." There are a few locations left, including this one at downtown Concord, also one in downtown Mooresville (and I think 2 or 3 more around the area). 2 things you need to know: 1. this is not the same What-A-Burger chain out west (thus no point in clicking on the link posted above) and 2. cash only! They have an ATM machine inside, but then I'm against unnecessary surcharges, and nothing is more painful than looking for your own bank's ATM machine when all you can think of is wolfing down a burger. For drinks they have your typical options, and witch doctor and Sundrop (you know you are in the South). For sides there are fries (a-ok), onion rings (not bad) and tater sticks (oh yeah!). Came to show my mother from out of town what a great breakfast What A Burger has, called to make sure they were still serving breakfast (10:20am). Then once we got here, we were rudely waited on by a cashier who apparently hated her life. She told us that there were no pancakes today. Think dried out Ore-Ida crinkle cut fries that you have to douse in ketchup and salt to make them palatable. My cheeseburger was so dry that it practically crumbled while I ate it. I only finished half of my cheeseburger and a few fries because it was that bad. I had originally brought ramen noodles to work that day for lunch because I didn't have time to prepare lunch in the morning.
