Hanging out and painting with WHAM at our City of Surprise community GAIN night.

Connie and the crew are awesome and do so much for thr artistic community. January 2023 they are creating classes to inspire art in the youth of our community. Ages 7 and up for sure and possible 5 and up as well. Keep your eyes peeled on their schedule for classes taught by educated teachers with the hearts to teach and inspire others. We have been able to join them for a few community events and appreciate all the joy they bring to our girls doing crafts with them.

I was so pleased to finally make it in to check out WHAM and all they have to offer. Those of you who know me already know I love art of all kinds and even dabble a bit myself. I'm more of a colored pencil, chalk, and acrylic paint person, but I've been wanting to branch out of my comfort zone to learn oil painting. My daughter also loves to paint and I'd read on their website they offer teen classes. What a fun way to learn more skills/passions and meet new friends possibly at the same time. Located just off of Grand on Dysart in Surprise sits WHAM in its own parking lot. There's a beautiful mural that caught my eye right when I got out of the car as well as a few metal sculptures. Once inside you're met with all kinds of art from paintings, photography, metal work and even some painted furniture for sale from local artists. There's a front counter with wonderful women there to greet you and answer any questions you have. Everyone was so friendly and I felt so welcomed. I even was able to meet some other women who couldn't tell me enough how much fun they have here. If you don't have time to stop in to get information you're looking for you can find it on their website with prices and times for all they offer. Im a HUGE supporter of local of any kind, may it be art, restaurants, you name it. While we are starting to get more of a local art scene in he west valley I'd love to see more; To do that we need more supporters. I highly recommend stopping by for an art class or two. If anything, but some items and support an artist trying to make their dreams come true.

Do NOT trust Chris Good (@mcgtattoos). He's a scam artist and has been fired from multiple tattoo…read moreshops in Atlanta because he messed up on so many clients. Go to his Instagram profile and look at his work. Then go look again, but more closely this time. Zoom in and you'll see even his best work is not that clean - his details are sloppy and his line work is incredibly shaky. Now, go look at my pictures. This dude really tattooed this and actually thought he did a good job. For context, I had a handful of tattoos scattered on my left arm. I (regretfully) gave him creative freedom to help fill in the rest of my arm to create a cohesive sleeve. Sloppy. Amateur. Unprofessional. His line work is terrible, his artistic vision is terrible, and his customer service is terrible. If you ever get the unfortunate opportunity to interact with him, you'll notice he speaks as if he knows everything. He tries to keep it subtle, but he has a very arrogant, egotistical, and condescending way about him. He tries to push his preferences/ideas on you and gaslights you into thinking his vision is better than yours. Let me put it this way: He does not care if YOU like the tattoo, he only cares if HE likes the tattoo. For example, Here are some alarming snippets he himself wrote on some of his older Instagram captions: 1. "I was told you have to do the tattoo exactly as the picture, but I've learned I am a true artist and I love to create and have fun with my artwork." - July 31, 2019 ^ He prioritizes himself "having fun", rather than creating something the client envisions even if there's a literal picture in front of him. 2. "Most artists always say, 'I can't get my client to do that.' Or, 'They won't want that.' All these statements are excuses. Any client that trusts their artist will not have a problem letting you have free range." - Dec 30, 2021 ^ I understand there needs to be a certain level of trust in the artist, and sometimes a client requests may be unrealistic. But here, he is essentially criticizing other artists if they can't persuade a client to get something, even if the client doesn't want it! It just proves he really doesn't care about clients' opinions! He disregards their ideas and would rather have "free range" to do whatever HE wants. PLEASE save yourself from disappointment and regret, and stay far away from this fraud. If this dissuades even one person from being tattooed by him, I'll call that a win. Chris does not have the technical skills or competency that is up to par with Black Castle or any high-end tattoo shop. He's a wannabe professional who thinks he's some deep, philosophical thinker. I'm not sure how this guy managed to slither his way into a good studio. He needs to learn how to draw a straight line first. Or just do us all a favor and change careers. And lastly, his breath smells awful.

At the Surprise store (14063 W Grand Ave, Surprise, AZ 85374), I regularly notice the same individuals there every day. They seem to know exactly when new carts are brought out and quickly grab specific items, almost as if they already know what's on the carts before looking through them. While it's possible they are simply there often and have good timing, it gives the impression they may have prior knowledge of what's coming to the floor. I wanted to share this observation with you in case it's something you'd want to look into.

This trip paid off with some artwork that was basically screaming, "make me spooky!" Perfect for repurposing into Halloween décor, and honestly that kind of creative find is why I keep coming back. The store itself is organized enough that you can navigate without losing your sense of direction, but still has that "hunt for it" vibe that makes thrifting fun. Prices are usually fair, and every once in a while you stumble across that hidden treasure that makes you feel like you've won the thrift-store lottery. Not every trip is a jackpot, but that's part of the charm. This time the win went to spooky artwork. Four stars because Goodwill is consistently a solid thrifting stop, and the thrill of the hunt never gets old.
