Place is kind'a noisy because it's a bar/restaurant but can still hear conversations among yourselves. I'm particular about hosts - the one who got our order was like 'throwing' the menus on the table. He could've just handed it to us. Overall I'd recommend the place. Upon arrival, a rather cold breeze picked up so I opted to sit inside, near the open door. My drink order was taken pretty quickly, but then getting my food order in took a while. I let them know I was gluten free and offered my paper explaining this in Dutch; at first the server didn't take it but said the kitchen could do it. He came back and said they'd make it without potatoes; I asked if the potatoes could be made plain, and he looked confused. He ended up asking for the paper after all and took it back to the kitchen. A good 30 minutes later, I got my dish - sea bream with some kind of sauce, mangetout, rocket and a side of roasted potatoes. It was alright; nothing amazing but I appreciate the care they our into assuring it was safe for me to eat. I had to ask to get the paper back; it has a greasy handprint now but at least I can continue safely eating for the rest of my trip. Three stars for so-so and slow service and food that wasn't worth the high-ish price.

So we kept walking and looking at our maps on our phone until we found Bar Spek. The dim lighting did not make it easy to find. We found spots at the bar. The bartender gave us recommendations for a bite and drinks. The atmosphere seemed hip and young. Not a traditional gastropub feel. Benches by the window where people were sitting and enjoying conversation, with tiny mismatched tables around. As we sipped our wines, we enjoyed the meat and cheese plate we ordered, which was large enough for two to share. My friend ordered a beef carpaccio because she just could not say no to that. No matter how much we ate, we didn't seem to make a dent in either one of those plates. As we watched one of the guys behind the bar prepare a cup of hot water with slices of ginger, we both knew what our next order was. We were both suffering from a head cold and needed a nice warm drink before continuing the night. So, smiling at him and pointing at the concoction he is making, I asked if we could have couple of those for a soothing drink!
