My daughter took a few lessons with Danny and Leonard, and now she's confident enough to get out there on her own--which says a lot about how well they teach. Danny was more than accommodating for my friend and I to make sure we had plenty of time to go through the full surf lessons and end in time to make it to the airport for our flight. The lesson was super straight forward and we got in the water almost immediately. My wife read several Yelp reviews for surfing lessons and she found Danny and worked out a lesson for my 10 year old son and my 7 year old daughter. We came from California (Bay area) to Hawaii for vacation and we wanted to have my son take surfing lessons on his 10th birthday so we booked an appointment with Danny in April for an October 3rd date. Danny took us to a secluded beach on an Army R&R facility and there were literally no one else around! We had the whole beach to ourselves!!! This is great because no one else was around to be in the way of Danny training our kids. Danny started by teaching the kids how to paddle and stand up properly on the board. He then took them out into the ocean and then waited for the right waves and then let them ride in on their own. It was AMAZING to see my 7 year daughter and my 10 year old son surf on their own and ride the waves onto the shore. Danny was cheering them on and encouraging them and recognizing them for doing good. They did this over and over about 5-7 times and then they also rode in once all together just for fun. The kids had a blast! Afterwards, Danny was patient with us and hung out and talked with us before I even paid. We had to clean up and pack up all our beach stuff and he didn't rush us at all. He recommend a shave ice place for us to try and it was delicious! I would definitely recommend Danny to anyone looking to get surfing lessons while in Oahu. We stayed at the Ko'olina Resort next to Disney Aulani and drove about 25 minutes or so to Danny and the Army R&R facility, it was the perfect spot! I am a big baby, super clumsy, and I can't swim. Having said that-- Danny was fantastically patient and through his coaching I was able to stand up and surf on the very first wave I caught. Danny gives his lessons on a very quiet and private beach so it's just you and the waves. The water is extremely shallow, so regardless of what happens, you're gonna be okay. I now know surfing takes lots of courage and I'm proud that I was brave enough to stand up on the board and ride the waves. Regardless of your level, Danny is supportive and patient. He also makes sure you get lots of photos and videos to document your day. A surf lesson from Danny is well worth the money. I plan to book another lesson soon. read more

My wife is local and I have been here 20 years. he completely flipped and was being racist telling my family to go back to where they came from. long story short Danny Borro, i am informing the management here at Piliau of your solicitation and lack of respect along with your racist comments about going back to where we came from. Hey I am 57 years old and decided I should take a surf lesson after meeting Danny. it was a GREAT decision. Danny has a simple clear method to teach anyone how to surf. I rode a wave to the beach on my second try. To be fair I fell off a lot as well but it wasn't his fault. I was tired from playing in the surf all day. No reflection on Danny he let me rest as I needed and was constantly aware of my condition. BTW just a note...DON'T SURF WITH YOUR WEDDING RING ON!! I lost mine and dead-eye Danny found it in minutes. But he was truly worried about the odds when I told him. So spare him and take it off. Danny has a fantastic wit and energy. Let me tell you about Danny boy- great with kids and great comic relief as well Surf lessons were super convenient and at probably the most affordable price you'll find on island, I think it was $150 total for both me and my son (8). You'll find Danny at Pilila'au beach, which is an Army recreation center, but you only have to have a military i.d. to drive on with your car, the beach is open to all. Look for a bunch of boards stacked up against the wall on the side of the beach where you see waves. Skip all the formalities, Danny will teach you the principles & then get you out there and standing up on your first time, and pretty much every attempt so long as you keep the basics in mind every time. All together, the lesson was about an hour and some change. Tips: 》Wear a rash guard, it has that name for a reason 》Kids 5 and up are good to go 》Always remember, west side is the best side \\m// Danny will keep you chuckling the whole time, and he's a real man... if you have kids he'll ride in with them on his shoulders! read more

Best Surf Lesson Ever! If you're staying on the West Side. . .Ko Olina area Danny is the person to call. We contacted him on the second day of our trip to Oahu. No waves so he said he'd give us a call daily to update us if we'd be able to go out. He was super responsive and after a couple of mornings with no waves he contacted us to let us know that the next morning looked promising. He confirmed in the morning. We booked a big group of 11 with Danny, 6 adults and 5 children, kids ages 4-8. He paddled the little ones out and surfed with them on the same board. The older kids who wanted to surf alone were able to do so. All the adults were able to ride a few waves during the lesson. He took us out in small groups. Everyone was entertained an exhausted after the lesson. He was friendly, encouraging, and gave great instruction. We plan to give him a call next visit. Give him a call early during your stay. A great coincidence introduced us to Danny: our friends' vacation at Ko'Olina overlapped one night with ours, and they introduced us to him with high praise. We weren't disappointed! Super responsive to phone calls/texts, Danny confirms appointments, shows up on time, takes pride in his work, and is the embodiment of Aloha. He talks fast, however, so try to keep up! HA! No one in our family (parents in 40's, kids 11 and 9) had ever surfed before. Within 15 minutes of a thorough shore lesson, ALL of us were up and surfing solo! My daughter even got a ride on his shoulders while he surfed (after getting up on her own alone). Danny is clear, encouraging, and keeps a close eye on safety. Amazing with kids - pushes just hard enough so they don't have time to be afraid. He is Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR certified. Surf boards are included in your lesson fee, and BY FAR he's the most reasonable. After our lesson (really, after we were so tired we couldn't paddle out any longer - he doesn't rush you), he treated us to a tour of some of his favorite West Side beaches. If they double book, they make up a story to get out of a promised plan, backtrack to tell you they're on their way, keep you waiting (watching paint dry) then block your number even though there was no harassing call/text. Example: "I'll be there in 15 minutes"....45 minutes later you text "how far out are you?" NO RESPONSE EVER AGAIN AS YOURE SITTING THEIR ALL PACKED UP PATIENTLY WASTING YOUR EXPENSIVE VACATION. Text ignored, so you wait 45 more minutes because you're an understanding person and maybe their phone is dead or they're driving or something?? but also that's an hr and 15 mins after the 15 mins they said they'd be so that's pretty bad communication. You finally decide...ok it's not an annoying time to call. Goes right to Voicemail. Now you've literally witnessed paint fully dry on walls....maybe their phones dead...maybe THEYRE dead?? Try their insta....immediate response back.....ok......??? Try calling again, right to voicemail. So get this. I call from a diff persons phone because I started to finally think it wasn't reasonably excusable anymore and that something cruel and shady was happening. Even though the only thing I said was "okay! No worries, see you soon (:" and only reached out, to kindly " hey you still on your way? (:" check on status of arrival *after VERY LONG PATIENT WAIT*, twice within one 45min and one 1.5hr interval, I was being treated like I did something to get LITERALLY BLOCKED. 4 hours I only sent two brief kind check-in messages because both times they were saying they were 15 mins away.... and it had been 45mins and 1.5hrs and I got BLOCKED. How do I know I was blocked? The instagram immediately replied and said online. My call was going right to Voicemail, they NEVER SHOWED????? ANDDD I finally *just to find out if it was okay for me fucking LEAVE and utilize what was left of my waisted day* used someone else's phone to call. It rang. They answered. I asked why they weren't answering my call and they played dumb "huh oh what what do you mean???" While using someone else's phone and while on the working phonecall, I said "this is what my call sounds like...." Showed them it went right to voicemail. And asked..."did you block me?? It's fine if you can't make it but just let us know so we aren't sitting here all day waiting for you to come when you say you're almost here. It's totally okay to bail but it's lame to make us sitting ducks thinking we need to wait for you to never show up." Lmfao he unblocked me and called me back on my phone to "prove" he didn't block me but finally fessed up to "having/wanting/needing (whatever)" to bail. Really bad character dude that's just basic respect and basic communication and basic consideration. Didn't even do the bare minimum just told me to hang tight and figured that if he didn't show after the 15 that he'd be in the clear. Meanwhile I'm dying to at least walk around, but feeling rude leaving in case he was a decent person and might end up showing up after... so. Freaking. Rude. And unprofessional. Worst part: 10 years ago I did surf with him on a vacation and he's a great instructor, and could be a fun tour guide IF HE FOLLOWS THROUGH--WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN TRUE, VERY UNRELAIBLE. He seemed (and proved, 10 years ago) that he was flaky then too when making plans for the day after surfing. He tried to make some lie excuse but then my mom kinda called him out back then and he ended up showing up (10 years ago), but it was a lot of the same shit that happened this time around. I feel stupid for thinking 10 years would mature a person but now I know never to trust his word. Not only is he unreliable, he will even lie and say he's on his way and make you sit there actually believing him and then he'll block you because he's a coward even though you only sent two texts in a 2.15 hour period post-late/post no-show. read more

The best of thr best of the best! I'm 40, out of shape, but have been wanting to surf my entire life. Had 1 lesson with Danny and he got the right board size, standing technique and instruction and decades of experience so that I was able to surf the best lesson of my life. I caught 10 waves in 90 min rode them all the way to the sand. I progressed so much learning to shuffle and try to turn. I caught my own wave (not white wash, actual wave!!!). All of these things only happened bc Danny is truly a master at teaching surfing. You can be an amazing at something but teaching is so different. Heh as truly mastered it so that you can habe the best time ever. I've taken so many mainland lessons that didn't know what board to get me on bc I'm heavier and it ended up being so demoralizing and snuffed my confidence and desire to learn how tonsurf. This guy is LEGIT. For those of you visiting the resorts in the Ko Olina area (Marriot, Aulani, etc.), this is the surf instructor for you. He is located 15 minutes north of the resorts, perfectly situated for when you need to get out and see a bit more of the island. Last week a group of 5 of us took a lesson while visiting the Oahu. Danny had all 5 of us, including our 4 year old, standing up and riding waves in short order. We enjoyed it so much we even went back for a second lesson 3 days later. That said, what really stood out for us about Danny was the following: - He takes fierce pride in teaching. He was genuinely pumped when each person had success. - He went the extra mile to make sure that we had the best surf day possible. He called throughout the week with surf reports, send videos of how the waves looked each day, and even face timed with us to show us how the waves were looking. - He specifically brought a variety of boards to suit all of our skill levels. - He took my four year old son surfing! He even put him on his shoulders! My son was delighted that he got to try, and we felt knowing that Danny is also a lifeguard. - He recommended an amazing fish taco place for us to hit for lunch after our lesson. Then had us follow him there so we didn't have any trouble finding it. Bottom line: Danny is a really good surf instructor. He's genuine and enthusiastic about what he does, and he's carved out a nice spot for himself on a beautiful, uncrowded beach. Danny isn't just an amazing surf instructor, he truly is an ambassador for the area and a gracious concierge. We have been to Waianae twice this year and worked with Danny both times. He rented paddle boards for us and I watched him spend extra time with one woman who was renting as she struggled with the wind.
