Mike is such a nice guy and great surf instructor! My husband and I took our 17 year old son and we all got up on the board and were able to surf in. Mike is super strong and paddled me out through the waves so I didn't get too tired too quickly. My 17 year old got up over and over and I was able to get him on video! The weather was beautiful and we had a great time making family memories. Later, I was talking to a local and they said this was the best surf school on the island! So glad we found them. I was super nervous to surf for the first time. Mike and Zigg/Zeke were SO NICE. They showed my mom and I all of the techniques, safety instructions. They brought surf boards for us, rash guards, water shoes. They even went above and beyond to make sure we came out during the best time period for the waves. Honestly an incredible experience and this post doesn't do them justice. I LOVE surfing now and was able to go from a complete noob to full on riding the waves. I took my second lesson with Micah today and it was sooo much fun being in the water and learning to surf from him. Now I realize this is only my second time but I had a blast and the session started out as very encouraging I got up on the first wave only to fall right away. Tried again and my surfboard whacked me across my nose and I didn't even know I was bleeding until Micah said are you ok, but it was all good and in the end I finished with a nice ride. All in all, Micah is an honest hard working guy and he makes learning such a joy. I still have a long way to go but it's always fun talking story with him and learning from this master waterman. So you are staying at the Courtyard and you see a brochure about surfing lesson and think how is this going to go? Well I can say without any reservations, we had an outstanding surfing experience. All but Dad was able to ride the first wave, I caught the second wave. Mike took the time to ensure our surfing lesson was easy to understand and then selected the right wave for us to ride. Four steps and you are riding waves. Mike is a top notch instructor that truly cares. He even recommend a boogie boarding spot and a few local restaurants. My husband and three daughters (17, 20, 23 years old) decided to try out surfing while we were visiting Oahu. We called and set up a group lesson for the next day. We met Mike at a local hotel and followed his car to a local beach. It was easy to follow his car because it had 4 surf boards strapped to the top. He was also careful to pull over and wait if a car got between us. He taught a short lesson on the sand (about 20 minutes) before heading out into the water with his assistant. He gave every one rash guard shirts to use. Mike and the assistant coached them and helped tow them back out. Everyone was successful standing up and riding the board. There was also an assistant who took picture from the beach for an addition charge of $50 plus tax. We got 58 pictures in digital format at the end of the lesson. Everyone had a great time and we got wonderful pictures too. read more

We booked with Mike for two of us for a beginner-ish lesson (we'd done a class a year before). Originally, it was from 3 to 5, and he called to push to 4 to 6. At first we were hesitant, but he said the waves would be better. Wow, he was right. We had great conditions and surfed facing into the sunset at the golden hour. It was pure magic. Mike is incredibly enthusiastic and is possibly more excited than you when you catch a wave. We were learning on the same beach he did as a kid, and he's got a passion for surfing that he channels into teaching. He gave each us tows back out as the lesson wore on; we each got several good rides and the lesson was one of the highlights of our trip. We both want to keep doing more and if back in Oahu will definitely go for another lesson with him. Do lather up well with reef-safe sunscreen. Having never surfed in my life I decided on the two hour private lesson with Mike. It was beyond amazing! He grew up just down the street and walking to the beach he knew everyone. He was patient, extremely knowledgeable and safety conscious. I was standing up on the board and riding waves in before I knew it! Recently vacationed on the North Shore of Oahu and stayed at Turtle Bay Resort. Wanted to take my two college-aged daughters surfing as one of our big activities for the trip, but had some difficulty booking through the resort and thought it just wasn't meant to be. Fortunately, we received a recommendation for Mike's Surf School from the manager at Seven Brothers Burgers in Laie (shout out to both Ethan from BYU and Seven Brothers for their delicious burgers). Mike responded promptly to my last minute email and indicated that he could fit us in to his group class at 12:00 the following day. Let me just say that my daughters and I have been surfing and had lessons previously in Santa Cruz and Stinson Beach, California. I tend to believe that any time spent surfing is a great time, but Mike's Surf School put all other experiences to shame. Mike's patience, passion, and enthusiasm for surfing and teaching others the joy of surfing exceeded my every expectation. His teaching technique really worked as we all rode giants (well...to us, anyway). Even when my old, out-of-shape body felt exhausted, Mike was like the "Energizer Bunny" and kept offering to assist my paddle out to the waves so we could keep on going. My daughters and I all stood up and rode the waves of the North Shore (some better than others...). All of us noted the time with Mike as the highlight of an all around amazing trip. My girlfriend and I were visiting Oahu and wanted to find a good place to get lessons. We're both somewhat experienced "surfers" but by no means are we any good. I found Mike on yelp and gave him a call. He was extremely helpful and catered to everything we could've needed. He seems to over-sell it a little bit sometimes, but I think it just comes from his genuine excitement to teach people how to surf. He's actually based out of the Mariott hotel, and the location on yelp is where he brings you to surf (the location was great, and the conditions were amazing, too). At first it may seem shady and perhaps "unprofessional" to some, but don't worry. He brought Eli with him, whom he seemed to be mentoring. They both did a great job making sure we were safe out on the water, and were very easy to talk to. While those who are looking for more advanced lessons may feel like there's more to be desired, I would definitely recommend Mike's School to anyone who's looking for lessons during the summer! read more
