I've been bringing my wife and I's vehicles here for service for about 3 years now. I grew up with a GM mechanic father, so I understand cars, just don't have the space or tools to do my own repairs. They have always been 100% honest with us, gone above and beyond for us and I'm so thankful to have found this garage. Most recently, my wife's car had a shifting issue that was come-and-go (acts up half the time and acts fine the other half). On a week they were slammed before Christmas, they still not only made room for my vehicle in the mix because I'm a repeat customer, but also spent 2 days with it trying to get the issue to surface again, - Dave the owner even went so far as to try driving it home and back after hours just to try getting the problem to arise. While the car has been frustrating, these guys have been nothing but helpful, are always easy to communicate with and have made exceptions to make things easier for us that I never would have expected them to make (from late night car drop offs, to working with me & being flexible on labor/time costs). I trust them completely which is such a rare thing to have in their industry and they've never suggested a repair that was unnecessary, even going so far as to run through the list of issues and telling me which are top priority and which ones could wait for another day. Any other shop I've worked with tries to exaggerate the issues because they want you to spend as much as possible on repairs while they have your car. Everything they've fixed has stayed fixed and not resurfaced as an issue. They know their stuff, are always busy, but still take the time to carefully explain the issues I've had, and discuss my options in a very low pressure way. The one time they weren't able to help us even turned up well. I had a Saturn Vue with a transmission issue. Turns out, that tranny was an experimental model no shop in Michigan would even let me bring in for a look. So few were made and they break so easily, no one took the time to learn to repair it. When the owner, Dave, heard me say my next option was to sell it for scrap. He said he didn't want me to do that; he had a license to sell it in auction as-is to someone who could use the rest of the car parts and I'd be able to get 4-5 times better return than scrap price. "Alright Dave, that sounds great. How much of a cut do you want?" He said he didn't want anything. Was willing to take it on as a project just to help me out. He's a busy guy running a successful shop and still was willing to take that project on to help me out. West Side Garage is one of a kind! It is so hard to find a trustworthy, knowledgeable mechanic shop these days that truly cares about their customers and employs exceptional business integrity. My girlfriend has been bringing her vehicles here for a couple of years now, so naturally I brought mine here when I had MAJOR problems with my car. They had the problem identified within hours and went above and beyond to find out that my car was actually still covered under warranty from the manufacturer - saving me thousands of dollars! They made sure I was happy and 100% satisfied and knew my options exactly instead of trying to make a quick buck like so many other shops these days. My daughter is a working GVSU student living a long way from home. On a Friday she took her car to Westside Garage with what turned out to be some bad brake issues. With hopes quickly fading of her coming home for the weekend Dave and his crew stepped up. I've done several of these myself so I know how easily they could have peeled her for more parts and labor. I get a commercial discount on my parts so I know approximately what the cost should be and I also work in a related industry and have friends that are mechanics so I know the book times for these repairs and what fair shop rates are. Dave explained the needed repairs to us, offered her a loaner car for the day, charged very fairly for parts and labor and had one of his guys willing to stay late (did I mention on a Friday!) to get the car done so she could come home. I took my car (Hyundai Tucson) in around July. It was shaking and making a squealing sound When I first took it to my dealer they told me I just needed new tires and charged me $70 to rebalance them but the problem was still there. I took my car to Westside Garage because a friend referred me. Turns out my brakes were horribly done (by the dealership!), the rotors had gone bad, and my calipers were so rusted they were having a hard time functioning. Got new brakes and rotors (with a great warranty) and they cleaned up my calipers but told me I would need to replace them down the road. It's now December and my calipers did go bad - I was basically driving with my brakes on and didn't know it. So my brand new brakes from July were ruined. Westside replaced the brakes for free and I got a free loaner car while mine was in the shop. Won't take my car anywhere else now! read more

We use Westside Garage religiously for not just auto repairs, but for auto inspections before purchasing. My brother is a mechanic, but lives out of town, and tells us Dave is right on when we give him the details of our issue, Westsides solution, and price for what needs to be done. The second opinion reassured us we would have WSide do all our repairs. We've always been treated very fairly and even when I had issues with a very hard to find part, he gave us a loaner since it was the week end. We really appreciated his attention to detail telling us all that we should get fixed and the test proving the repairs were needed. Needed a last minute oil change so I called Westside and they got me right in. What I love about this place is that I am a single Mom and they don't put pressure on me to get extra stuff done that doesn't need to be done. They actually took the time to explain to me why I need the type of oil that I do and showed me another part that the oil needs to flow through to keep my car running smoothly. The wrong type of oil can cause issues down the road which I never knew until today. They also, started selling cars as of a week ago and they have a 30 day guarantee that no one offers around GR. I have serviced my vehicle there for years now (mainly oil changes and couple of repairs since my car was used) and I have never had a bad experience or complaint. I always have an amazing experience with the Westside Garage. My dad is a mechanic in Detroit and I am very careful who I bring my car to in Grand Rapids. Dave is always very kind and willing to listen and go the extra mile. I broke down on the highway late in the afternoon with my pickup and travel trailer. The towing driver asked where I wanted my truck for repair. I had no idea so he made some calls and Westside agreed to tackle my problem, I suspected a fuel pump. Westside Garage went out of their way to assist me to get back on the road. He worked overtime to replace the fuel pump and other problems that arose during the replacement,which happens on an older vehicle! They supplied a courtesy vehicle during the wait. I was not paid for this review and did not even see the printed receipt. I have never posted a review before, but I cannot say enough about the amazing service from Dave!! He went the extra mile to go over all the repairs, including what needed to be done immediately and what could wait. He shopped for the best price on parts and my bill was less than his original quote. It's always hard to find a mechanic that you trust. I used Westside Garage for the first time when I got my coupon for a $12.95 Oil Change and I was impressed with them! Being a younger woman I am always worried mechanics will try to confuse and scare me by telling me I need a whole list of things done to my vehicle. They were great though!! I took my car in for a last minute repair 2 days before Christmas. I expected to get gouged on price, if they would even get to the fix before the holiday. That was not the case at all. They not only got my car taken care of in less than a day but they also were able to keep it affordable as well.
