When it was time to upgrade my short fins and diving mask that I literally found on the beach - Westside Dive & Tackle was the spot I decided to go to. I walked into a few other surf and snorkel spots but they mostly carried short fins. I went with the Leaderfins which are the most affordable carbon fins. The fins do come separately from the foot pocket, so I also got their forza foot pockets. They do offer a service where they put together your fins and foot pockets but only certain people are trained on that, so I did have to pick it up just a few days later- and that service is $30. I also got a pair of diving socks to go with my fins. They have different sizes, thicknesses, and cuts (high vs low). I also got a new diving mask and snorkel. The best thing about going to a dive shop is the ability to try things on and Westside Dive has so many different options. Being able to put on the foot pockets with the diving socks or even just trying on a few different masks to find the one that best fits your face is why it's better to come in person than buying online. The service was also super friendly. I was making some big purchases, so I wanted to make sure that each component was exactly right and the staff here was helpful and overall super chill. I bought my second pair of fins from this store this week, picked up the fins from the store today. I used them in the water and they felt really tight. I called them to ask a simple question, but they texted me instead. (Screenshots attached) I felt the guy texting was pretty rude, specially to be talking to a paying customer. Apparently the guy at the store claims I said I don't wear booties which is not true at all and in person he said he always has people try the foot pockets with booties on at the store which he never did with me! As you can see the guy on the text told me to go back to the store to get them replaced. Once at the store the guy said this was on me and that it would not be replaced unless I bought new foot pockets. Definitely never doing business with these guys again. read more

Customer service is mediocre. Selection is pretty good, lots of brands/items to choose from. Pricing is not bad.

Great place for your dive necessities although their selection isn't quiet as big as other places on island they still do hold things others don't and recommend checking them out if you haven't. Bought my first dive R fins here and must say its the best fins I ever owned. read more

Wow. General impression: I don't know if the guy was lazy, put out, or just a snob, or maybe all three. We were the only people in the store, and it was like pulling teeth getting the young guy behind the counter to say anything. Maybe he thought we were tourists, or just having a bad day. I'm a 24 year active duty military sailor that specializes in all things diving. I made it a goal to get into spearfishing when we moved here. I needed an education on spearguns and fins. I started with trying to ask questions about the fins on the wall. One question I asked was what is the sizing like, and the guy was just really put out. Come on, Brah! I'm ready to spend some money! Him being put out made me put out. I didn't even bother asking about spearguns. We were over it, and left. Later in the week, we went to another store in Honolulu, and I ended up getting the help, and really the quality customer service that anyone deserves when walking into a specialty business. Diving is dangerous. Anything in the ocean is dangerous. If you have a business that helps put people out in the water, take some time with any person that walks through those doors to help them make the right choices. read more

Always go here for dive stuff and even if not buying I can look at all the new stuff and see what I like and/or prefer. I have only ever dealt with a guy named Ian and a guy named Kris, both very knowledgable and always willing to help. Small store but good and "relevant" selections are always there.. Good thing is that they have stuff from all over the industry not just stuff made here in Hawaii so you get a great option of assorted items from all over the sport not just "local" stuff... Strongly recommend this place for all levels of diving! Last September, had my first dive in my life with the owner Peter. Had a wonderful experience. Decided to take course through West Side Scuba to obtain the Open Water Diver license. This year, I went back WSSC to finish my dives. Had Max Weedon as my instructor. He was very patient and very kind. I am not a water person. He encouraged me and helped me to overcome my fear. Had one on one on the first 2 dives, one to two on next 2 dives. This really helped me a lot. At the end of the diving session, he asked me to do air another diving session since few points I didn't do well. He said he has to be responsible for me and also want to make sure I can be safe in the water(I was not aware my surrounding which scared him a lot). He is nice but also strict which I need it for my underwater safety. He is a excellent responsible instructor. Next day, I was on the boat with my instructor Max, captain and a crew. Had a private diving trip with them. Can't say enough Thank You to this company. I had wonderful experience with West Side Scuba Center! The staffs are friendly and fun. They provide snack bars, cakes and bottle water all for free. What I like the most is they are friendly but also responsible. It is a safe company to go diving with. In the past decade I have bought 2 wetsuits, 4 spearguns, one big ass dive light, 20 pairs of dive socks, 6 sets of fins, 4 dive knives, 8 pairs of gloves, 15 sets of bands, 4 dive lines, 8 mask and 12 snorkels. Not to mention all the random crap I've picked up to maintain everything. The Owner Kris has always had an attitude like he's "put out" that you're there as a customer and I always walk out feeling insulted for spending my money at his shop. I've never had that issue with any of his employees and it has always been a pleasure but the owner really needs to re evaluate his customer service skills. My husband and I went to West Side Dive & Tackle (Waipahu location) earlier this week to search for dive gear. We got to talk story with the sales associate, Kai, who was very knowledgeable about diving, spear fishing and the products they offer at their shop. Kai answered all our questions and was able to provide us recommendations on dive gear that met our current needs and skill level. He even gave us recommendations down the line, if we choose to get more serious about spear fishing. We did not feel pressured or rushed when making these purchases either which is another reason why we had such a great experience. Not going anywhere where else! Best price and all around service! They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks..well let me tell you I learned a lot! Passing down my old dive gear to my son along with some new stuff, I feel safe and confident that he will be fine out there hunting some fish. The one thing this old dog needs to do is remembering people names so I can tell you who to see but I do know he only works Tuesday and Wednesday but anybody there is good! Got to buy some stuff so I'll be going in soon. What I do miss is the text messages on deals! Those where good! Especially when you can show the wife I'm going to buy something on sale and not just going to buy just anything. But hey if I see something else good I might as well get that too, and save gas! Are other store fronts bigger? Can you get anything at West Side Dive and Tackle anywhere else? Perhaps. BUT these are the guys you want to do business with! Great knowledge; Casey (I think) is very knowledgeable and genuinely wants to help you gear up for your journey, whether it's spear fishing or free diving or anything. Awesome selection of things. You can tell by their selection that they are worried about quality and experience, not profits. If I was really rude, I would give this place zero stars. Rude, no greet, and definitely no customer service skills. I believe the guy who "did not" help us tonight was even the owner (caucasian guy). In Hawaii, for the locals, especially if customers are spending $200 dollars for dive fins, I expect exceptional customer service even at 30 minutes till closing. Let me tell you, my husband and I walked in to this little shop excited for the gift certificate my husband received for Christmas and this place was a "bum your trip" deal!!!! Walked in with NO hello! Then my husband was asking questions about certain fins he wanted and as my husband asked, the guy looked at his laptop, continued typing away on whatever he was doing, sat there and did not give any eye contact or suggestions and tried to brush my husband off!!! Then my husband asked to try the fins on and my husband got "Oh! you gotta try 'em on now???!!!" as his response from this dude. If we did not have a gift certificate we would have never spent any money there AT ALL!!!! So sad I have to be so negative, but it seemed to me that this place does not care about their customers nor their own service and the people. We live in Hawaii, so share the Aloha!!! Regardless of your experience level or spearing knowledge, Kris, the owner, takes the time to talk with you and help figure out what kind of gear is right for you. I've been a return customer for about a year, and every time i go in there i learn something... still trying to get him to tell me where he finds all those ono's though... one down side, sometimes inventory is a little low. Even so, the one time I wanted a certain wetsuit that wasn't in stock, Kris took the order and it got there within a week. Been to this shop twice and there is one employee there that is very dishonest and stuck up. Store has good equipment but it's not worth putting up with the unnecessary shadyness and sass.
