You walk in to see a counter with seating for four people, high back, swivel chairs. There's a…read morediner menu letter board up on the wall, yellow with age, announcing the flavors of milkshakes and ice cream. It's from the 60s and probably hasn't changed since they put it up 65 years ago. There's a whiteboard on the back wall with the special for the day written out. Bacon egg and cheese omelette or a sausage egg and cheese sandwich on toast. Five dollars. The kind of place with a few locals sitting at a booth having their morning coffee, one of the waitresses offering Jim the last donut because they know he will want it. He accepts it. This is, in my mind, a classic American small town diner. The kind of place I grew up, eating in my hometown of 500 people. It's not high cuisine, there's nothing fancy about the food although I did come across a few things I had never seen before on the menu. Fried mush. Meat grits specials, like the scuttle butt and the chili Bob. An age old, but perfected recipe of eggs, meat, cheese, and a starch either potatoes ( homefries) or toast. The coffee is weak and not much flavor to it but, to be honest, it's exactly what you would expect in a place like this and there's something comforting about that. Honest, simple food made day and a day out, catering to the local crowd and a few roadway, travelers like myself who happen to come across it. There's a certain charm and depth to places like this that have been lived in day and day out by the same people for decades. For those like up rounded, there's the nostalgia and connection to the many other people having the same experience day after day in communities across the United States. Forgive me if I wax nostalgia can get a little sentimental here, but this morning's dining experience definitely elicited that for me. I hope you can find your own version of this sometime today or in the near future.

My wife and I, with our children, have been weekly regulars here, sometimes coming in twice a week…read moreon the weekends. Our absolute favorite has been the Burgers & Brew night on Wednesdays and Thursdays, specifically since they rolled out the smash burgers a few months back. They are easily some of the best in the area. The tabletop adverts and menus clearly state "$9.99 ANY Burger." Now, we're reasonable people. When we order the Double Smash, it usually rings up around $12.99 or $13.99. Even though the ad explicitly says "ANY" burger, we never complained about paying a few bucks extra for the double patty because it made sense. But last Thursday was a completely different story. When the bill came, both of our double smash burgers were charged at the full regular menu price of $16.99 each. When I questioned our waitress about it, she casually told me, "Yes, the doubles are always regular price and aren't included in the special." Excuse me? This "little side note" is absolutely nowhere on the menu, the flyers, or the Burger & Brew adverts sitting right on the tables. The ad literally says "ANY burger." We weren't even expecting to get them for $9.99--we just expected the $12.99-$13.99 upcharge we've been paying for months! To completely pull the special out from under us with zero warning or menu notation is just sneaky. It's incredibly frustrating to get nickeled and dimed when you're loyal customers. Out of principle, this bait-and-switch pricing left such a bad taste in our mouths that our weekly visits are officially over. Plenty of other places in the area value their regulars more than this. P.S. We didn't just rush to blast them online, either. We tried contacting their customer service message system through both the app and the website on three separate occasions. Every single time, we got an automated response promising someone would get back to us within 3 days. It's now been 8 days. Dead silence. Incredible "customer service."

The restaurant has an interesting split personality. The bar area is warm and inviting, with…read morecomfortable seating at the bar, tables, and booths that feel well-designed and cohesive. Unfortunately, the larger dining room on the other side is the complete opposite--sterile, plain, and uninspired. It could really benefit from a decorator who could bring it in line with the vibe of the bar and outdoor areas. 17 West positions itself as the nicest (and essentially only upscale) restaurant in the New Bremen area, but it falls short of that goal. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Salad sandwich with mashed potatoes. What arrived was a croissant that looked like it came straight from the IGA bakery, topped with a single sad leaf of lettuce and a thin, pale tomato slice. The chicken salad was scooped with what appeared to be an ice cream scoop and simply plopped onto the bread. The result was a bland sandwich with almost no spice or flavor. The mashed potatoes were presented the same way--scooped and unappealing. Overall, the presentation was cafeteria-level at best, and I've had better sandwiches in hospital cafeterias. My wife ordered the Firecracker Chicken. Her side salad was tiny and unremarkable, and while the chicken leg itself tasted decent, it was still just a sauced chicken leg. At $22, it felt significantly overpriced. 17 West likely wouldn't survive in a larger city with real competition. In the New Bremen area, however, it benefits from having very little rivalry, which allows it to stay in business despite the clear mismatch between its prices and the quality and presentation of the food.
