Mom and daughter searching for apples
David W.

I absolutely love this place! My daughter and I already have countless memories here. For a perfect fall day, make your way to Weston. Pick some apples, see some baby animals, ride the tractors - pick some pumpkins It's free besides a few rides and all the food. This place had gotten better and better year after year. Thank you all for making the perfect place to take a little one for fall

This lovely pumpkin patch farm is located off the beaten path, but it has lots of charm. The food options were decent at the little kitchen they have with a walk-up window. You have to stand in line and purchase a ticket to get onto the tractor that takes you out to the pumpkin patch. Overall, this is a nice getaway for the kids as the Fall Season kicks off.

Red Barn Farm is a virtual wonderland of wholesome family fun. It's like somehow sucked all the sarcasm and cynicism out of me, and replaced it with baked apples and petting zoos. It was just so good to see so many people of all ages just out in the country enjoying themselves that I couldn't help but join in on the good times. The main. attraction at Red Barn Farm is certainly their pumpkin patches. Sure, you can just walk up and buy a pre-cut pumpkin, but why are you driving all the way to Weston to do what you could at Hy-Vee? No, take the hay ride out into their land and then wander around a patch, looking for the perfect pumpkin. Trust me, it's there. Even with the incredibly dry summer we had, the owners worked incredibly hard to keep the crops irrigated, and their efforts were rewarded with a bounty of frickin huge pumpkins. I loved it. My second favorite attraction was the small apple orchard. For a small fee you can get a basket (one of three sizes) and stroll along, picking your own apples. Now I can see how this would be great for families, but I also think it'd be an AWESOME date. It's pretty romantic and stuff. In the back corner of the orchard they have a number of beehives, which were fascinating to watch. Also worth mentioning is their barnyard, with a variety of animals you can watch, and some you can even pet. I touched: a goat, a pig, a pony, and a mule. Pretty rad, huh? They also have a pony ride and a corn maze, though neither of those are my cup of tea. I'm sure kids love them, but alas, I'm not a kid. Finally there's a country store, with a variety of awesome products. There's a whole wall of jarred stuff that should basically be called "The Bloody Mary Garnish Emporium" and of course apple and pumpkin products out the wazoo. Weston Red Barn Farms is really a quick drive from KC, and I just cannot stress enough how worth the trip it is. If you don't go, I'll probably question why you don't want your kids to have a happy childhood.

Pumpkins galore -- October 1, 2012

Red Barn Farm is a staple in my family's fall. My mom and I spent a Monday in Weston (choose a different day -- most stores in town are closed on Monday), and I couldn't think of a better day off. We walked around the farm, enjoyed an apple cider slush and then went to the gift shop. The rolling hills and changing trees are such a simple, but stunning beauty once October hits. We also stopped across the street to the old Vaughn's Apple Farm, which seems to be owned by Red Barn Farm now (?). It's a cute little gift store and I think it is pretty awesome that they are involved with the special needs community by having them come out and develop life skills by working out on the farm. I'll be back...every single year for the rest of my life.

So we decided to revel in the Fall Festival even without kids. Every Fall, working farms all over the country have Fall Festivals to herald this great season with an array of activities to charm families across the United States as the harvest begins and the weather turns wonderful. Children are the biggest beneficiaries. We took part in everything. The tractor hay ride, the corn maze. Well there was the horse drawn hay ride but we didn't do that. The tractor hay ride was fun fun fun, as it chugs along the dirt road through the farm, offering a very scenic view. We were herded onto it and crammed on the wooden/plastic (can't remember) seats facing each other. It makes a stop at the pumpkin patch, where everyone gets off to pick their own pumpkins right off the ground to buy, which is a sight to behold. If you have only lived in the suburbs and the city, you have to see a pumpkin patch in its natural state (rather than in some theme park) and in the flesh at least once. Just for the fun of it and it is very fun. Then there's the amazing sight of rows and rows of bulbous pumpkins that had been picked, on display. Great photo op. The corn maze is lame, but it made for great photo op. The great thing that sets Red Barn apart is the array of farm animals on "exhibit", so it functions as a free petting zoo in a way. So this keeps the children excited for at least 30 minutes. They are geese, chickens, turkeys, sheep, pigs and other farm animals, all living happily in Red Barn until it's time for them. Entry to Red Barn itself is free, while hay rides and corn maze are chargeable during the Fall Festival. There's also a farmer's store as expected, selling pumpkins, preserves, natural soaps, honey, lots of good stuff. The prices here are higher than other farms, do take note. If that matters, buy at another farm but come here for the farm animals.

Part of a wedding here last fall, first of all absolutely beautiful spot, both the timber barn and the vistas. I'm not personally a barn wedding gal but it is stunning. The wedding coordinator was very knowledgeable, affable and incredibly helpful both in venue planning visit as well as day of event. The 3 stars are for the staff, other than 1 young man, who was above and beyond, whose name I wish I could remember, but unfortunately not there for duration of event. The rest of team acted very much like seasonal staff. Opposite of helpful. Sitting around, shooting the breeze, occasionally issuing poorly delivered directive about something the guests were doing wrong. At breakdown they were literally watching clock as time to be out was mid nite, and we were hustling. Not friendly or helpful. Just not great customer service. I realize event spaces are a business but in the afterglow of a wedding they could be I dunno maybe nice.

Amazing pumpkin picking!

One of the greatest experiences EVER with my kids at Halloween took place at this fantastic establishment. It's a real deal farm in a beautiful location. You can take a tractor ride out to pumpkin fields and pick your own. You feel like you're in the middle of the woods (because you are) and can really have some quality time with the little ones. There is a petting zoo and all kinds of little things for the littles ones to do. We took a horse drawn carriage ride through the woods as well... so cool. We also went one time earlier in the year and picked apples. There are a couple of different apple orchards on the property and you are free to pick and pay as you go. It was all a great time and really priced pretty well compared to anything similar that I've been to in the past.

Greatest of all time. The GOAT!

I have been going for the last 30 years and have seen many changes but have never left disappointed. The patch normally opens mid June and highly recommend calling the Picking Report before heading out. If going with little ones, take a wagon or backpack carrier for them. Little fingers can't pick very fast and tend to get tired. They have a wonderful bakery with delicious muffins for sale and a general store with all kinds of jams, bakery items, honey and anything blueberry related. If you didn't pick enough, you can also buy "We Pick" berries, but calling ahead to reserve is recommended. Lots of picnic tables to enjoy baked goods or picnic lunches. Walking can be challenging on the gravel surfaces, but for anyone with difficulties can drive to the farther fields. There will still be walking involved and no hard surfaces.

Met a wonderful knowledgeable man named Fred at the River Market on a Saturday morning in October…read more He was selling some herbs and greens, but what caught my eye is that he was selling chestnuts from his farm! I have never bought uncooked chestnuts before and bought a small basket to try. These chestnuts were huge! My mistake was not cooking & trying them on that Saturday. They were so fresh, as Fred had mentioned, that they were so easy to peel! I have never had chestnuts so fresh that the fuzzy interior skin peeled off so easily! Each large chestnut was so delicious. Fred is a wealth of information! We chatted and learned he had completed his agricultural masters at the University of Hawaii at Manoa! He is the epitome of the friendly Midwesterner I remember from my college days! Check out Fred at River Market in Kansas City to see what he is selling. He will gladly answer questions. Although it is not blackberry season, he has a blackberry picking farm. Will contact him the next time I am in Kansas City! Btw, Fred said he enjoys the chestnuts boiled. I tried boiling and baking per the instructions he provided. Yes, I did clip the bottoms of the chestnuts Fred. The boiled ones were moister, but more difficult to peel. The roasted o ES peeled nicely as the hard shells cracked with light pressure. I liked them boiled with less time, then tossed in my Ninja I have in KC. I still have to do more testing on the cook times to get them perfect. Maybe I need to need to roast them on an open fire!

Wohletz Farm U-Pick - Fresh picked strawberries!

A beautiful Kansas farm that loaded with "u-pick" strawberries every May and early June…read more Maybe it's the Kansas in my blood, but it's really, really beautiful around this farm (much more so than nearby Missouri farms). Rolling hills, green tree canopies, dirt roads and big sky all while being surprisingly close to Lawrence. This farm is such a fun experience to pick strawberries at, and I'll go step-by-step in just a sec, but I have to shout out that I really appreciate the simplicity of this experience. Some of the u-picks and pumpkin patches go overboard with cheesy rides, hastily-made plywood games, etc. Some may love those, I don't always. I prefer to let the nature and friendly people around provide the fun, and Wohletz shines in that regard. Details on how it works: Step one: We're in a semi-transition from Covid times, so it's appointment based from their FB page and they'll drop them 24 hours in advance, give or take. Step two: Plan for about 45 minutes from the KC area, plug it in your GPS and go -- bring cash! Step three: As you make your way to the picking fields, the staff will guide you to a row that's flush with berries. Many are visible, some hide under big leaves, but they're super easy to pick compared to peas or even blackberries in the summer heat. Step four: Take your hopefully loaded up basket, pay in cash and head out to gorge on strawberries, make a cake or pie and plan to do it again next year. Again, we gravitate to this area a lot anyways, but the rural land around Lawrence really is a special place. I'm just now realizing we drive up this way for strawberries in the spring, trail runs in the summer, pumpkin picking at Schaake's Pumpkin Patch in the fall, and cut a Christmas tree at Strawberry Hill Tree Farm in the winter. Enjoy Wohletz and if you miss their prime picking season, they are also available at the OP Farmers Market on most days!

This farm was about 40 minutes south west of my home in KCMO and located right off the roadway. My wife and I were greeted by one of the neighbors who helps keep an eye on the farm and run the register for the stand. They have plenty of live berry bushes and small trees in the nursery part of the farm and so many pumpkins. You couldn't walk five feet without finding more pumpkins!! They have a cute little building which houses all the canned jams, jellies, honey, and syrups that they have available. My wife and I spotted some peach and blackberry jalapeño jam and I was hooked!! Who doesn't love a little kick to their morning toast? They even had a small corn maze in the back of the farm for kids. As well as a sizable bonfire pit set right next to a stream that looks like it's amazing on cool autumn nights. They have a rabbit, three donkeys, and a cat who wonders the property. Being an animal lover I couldn't resist saying hello to the donkeys. One was rather happy to see me pick up the brush and pet him for 10 minutes while the other two eyed me down. When we were there it was quite and peaceful as we were the only customers. Talking with the lady who helped us she said "wait until tomorrow and this place will be full". She went on to tell us that it's mainly busy with school trips during the week and that on Wednesday they had a kindergarten class come through to learn and make their own cider. Did I mention that yet? You can schedule a hayride and make your own fresh squeezed cider!! If that's not a reason to get some friends together this fall then I don't know what is!! If you're looking for a cute intimate farm to get your fresh pumpkins look no further!! This place is worth the drive.
