    Pumpkin Patch

This is a great place to celebrate the autumn harvest and get in the Halloween mood! Schaake's has pick-your-own pumpkin patches as well as a variety of already found ones if you are not in the mood or able to peruse the fields yourself. Schaake's also offers hayrides and cute photographic opportunities like the "How Tall This Fall?" mural.

Well worth the trip this time of year if you want to "pick" your pumpkin from the patch. It seems they go through the patch every day and cut those that are ready. Perfect for little ones who get a charge out of riding on a hay rack, looking at chickens and cows or going through a small maze.

This was by far the best pumpkin patch I've ever visited. There was quite a large crowd there last weekend and we had to park some distance away. Once you get there, you can ride the tractor out into the field (or walk if you prefer). I really enjoyed that they had so many different varieties of pumpkins and they were all mixed together. You never knew what you might find under the next leaf. While there were many people there, there was plenty of room to spread out and the field didn't feel crowded. We stacked our "short list" selections by the edge of the row and the tractor picked us up when we had made our final selections and were ready to go. The pumpkins were $.45/lb which seemed pretty reasonable. Once you arrive back at the main area with your pumpkins, there are wheelbarrows available if you need them. The pumpkins are then weighed and you are given a slip with the total weight. The was a cash register outside and a few more inside the main building. It was very busy, but they were pretty efficient in getting people checked out. They also have some activities for the kids: pumpkin sling shot ($1 for 2 tries), a hay bale maze, some various props to take pictures with, and animals to look at.

I wanted to find a place where I could take my daughter and husband as this is my daughters first halloween and my husband has never been to a pumpkin patch. I have heard nothing but great things about the Schaake's Pumpkin Patch and I was very optimistic about starting a family tradition of picking out pumpkins here each year. This however will not happen because I will not be returning to Schaake's. We reached the pumpkin patch late in the day around 5PM thinking we wouldn't need much longer than this to find a couple of pumpkins. First off the selection was atrocious everything was either rotten or tiny (and when I say everything I mean literally EVER-Y-THING.) My husband, my daughter and I walked the length of a city block and back, and only found one tiny, decent pumpkin for our daughter. We were being rushed to leave because it had reached 6PM, we had our pumpkin weighed @ 3 pounds and went to pay. We paid $1.45 for a tiny pumpkin and headed to our car but on our way we got stopped by a teenager with a clipboard asking for a receipt. We were not given a receipt because our cashier was too busy talking with her associate. Regardless we got questioned, and practically called liars and theives to our faces. He said "If you had actually paid for the pumpkin you would have gotten a receipt." We were tired, had a 7 month old and just wanted to go home. We were finally released to leave after the teenage boy noticed we had a 'Free Bowling' card we had picked up while at the register. Needless to say me and my husband were very disappointed. On top of all this we got home to find our pumpkin only weighed one pound.. not three. I realize that some of this employee neglegance may have been due to the fact that it was later in the day and the employees were also ready to go home but having personally worked in customer service, I know that this is not how you treat customers regardless of the hour. To Conclude: the selection was awful, we were treated absolutely awful and our daughters first pumpkin patch experience was absolutely ruined (thankfully she will not remember it). We will not be returning and will be highly recommending to anyone who cares to hear not to as well.

They have a lot of different verities of pumpkins here and free hay rides out to the fields and back.

Cottin's may be associated with Ace Hardware but they are as local as you can get. There was a tornado in the area recently. The tornado happened around 7:00 pm and there was devastation in many neighborhoods. Cottin's announced they would re-open the store and stay open as long as needed so everyone could get what they needed that night. Totally unbelievable that a store would do that and it created a huge impact on me. Cottin's also serves as a drop off center for used cell phones to be donated to the local domestic violence shelter. The cell phones are given to victims of domestic violence so they will be able to communicate in an emergency. What a wonderful thing for Cottin's to do in collecting the phones. Before this drop off point, I had to drive to the outskirts of town during business hours to make my donation. I love a store giving back. The store has plenty of local flavor. The parking lot even serves as the farmers market during the week. The quaintness of the store is noticed everywhere inside, too. The displays were creative and they are customer service oriented. Prices are competitive, too. The only downside to this lovely store is the door is accessed on the side of the building and you have to park in a back parking lot. There is ample parking room but you have to snake through a neighborhood to get to the parking access. There is no store front access, everything is accessed through the rear. Just a minor intrusion and not a game changer by any means. Local flavor, great service, good prices and great philanthropy... awesome store!

There are several Farmer's Market locations in Lawrence and have been for many years, but Cottin's…read morehas always been my favorite. Cottin's is a fourth the size of the big Saturday morning market, but it excels for several reasons. First, the downtown market (if you talk to the vendors) is rife with minor infighting, rules enforcement and headaches for some of the vendors. That with the big crowds and you get a lot of grumpy people selling their products. None of that here. The family that runs the hardware store is always present and has a great attitude--and it shows in the vendors and the people that show up every Thursday at 4:00 p.m. with a closing time of 6:30 p.m. And what's this? The Free State Brewery has a booth so it's part happy hour, part social gathering, part simply a good time. Oh, and the music is scheduled months in advance and rotates so you don't have to suffer some of the awful stuff that frequents the downtown market ad nauseam every week. I even prefer most of the vendors here and it's a delightful mix of interesting small businesses, few of which frequent the downtown market. Always something cooking as well so a good place to grab an early dinner, have a beer, chat with some friends and just enjoy the afternoon. This is really what a Farmer's Market should be in my opinion and why I'll keep coming back as long as it's here.

Wohletz Farm U-Pick - Fresh picked strawberries!

A beautiful Kansas farm that loaded with "u-pick" strawberries every May and early June…read more Maybe it's the Kansas in my blood, but it's really, really beautiful around this farm (much more so than nearby Missouri farms). Rolling hills, green tree canopies, dirt roads and big sky all while being surprisingly close to Lawrence. This farm is such a fun experience to pick strawberries at, and I'll go step-by-step in just a sec, but I have to shout out that I really appreciate the simplicity of this experience. Some of the u-picks and pumpkin patches go overboard with cheesy rides, hastily-made plywood games, etc. Some may love those, I don't always. I prefer to let the nature and friendly people around provide the fun, and Wohletz shines in that regard. Details on how it works: Step one: We're in a semi-transition from Covid times, so it's appointment based from their FB page and they'll drop them 24 hours in advance, give or take. Step two: Plan for about 45 minutes from the KC area, plug it in your GPS and go -- bring cash! Step three: As you make your way to the picking fields, the staff will guide you to a row that's flush with berries. Many are visible, some hide under big leaves, but they're super easy to pick compared to peas or even blackberries in the summer heat. Step four: Take your hopefully loaded up basket, pay in cash and head out to gorge on strawberries, make a cake or pie and plan to do it again next year. Again, we gravitate to this area a lot anyways, but the rural land around Lawrence really is a special place. I'm just now realizing we drive up this way for strawberries in the spring, trail runs in the summer, pumpkin picking at Schaake's Pumpkin Patch in the fall, and cut a Christmas tree at Strawberry Hill Tree Farm in the winter. Enjoy Wohletz and if you miss their prime picking season, they are also available at the OP Farmers Market on most days!
