Stopped by Shun Fat to pick up some groceries while getting ingredients ready for dinner, and overall found some pretty solid deals. For meat, I grabbed ground beef, pork neck (currently on sale for $1.99/lb), and chicken breast. Prices were definitely reasonable. For produce, quite a few items were cheaper than H Mart, including enoki mushrooms, Japanese yam, daikon, shiitake mushrooms, tofu, and carrots. That said, the Japanese yam didn't look very fresh this time, so I ended up skipping it and buying it at H Mart instead, even though it was a bit more expensive. Some items were priced about the same as H Mart, like napa cabbage ($0.99/lb), onions ($0.39/lb), and bean sprouts ($0.99 per pack). One change I noticed is that cucumbers are now pre-packaged instead of being sold loose, so you can't pick them individually anymore. They're also slightly more expensive than H Mart now. They also had a great deal on Driscoll's strawberries, $0.99 for a 1 lb box, which is definitely worth picking up. Westminster Supermarket /Thuan Phat Supermarket is at a very convenient location off Beach Boulevard and corner of McFadden. However, parking is a bit of a challenge on the weekends. The store carries a large variety of ethnic groceries but main focus is asian foods and canned goods. They have many types of fresh, tropical fruits and freshly butchered meats and fish. I usually shop there when I'm in the area running errands. Long lines at checkout most of the times but they have many open registers so the lines do move quickly. I went here for some blue claw crab and they did for a decent price. The service was pretty good in the seafood section and at the front it was a bit slow but they were super nice is it was nice to have a some conversation. Of all the Asian grocery stores in this area, this one is so much neater, cleaner, organized and well stocked. The ever present "Asian Grocery Store Odor" is noticeably missing here, which is nice for a change. Even for this Canto Asian, the odor can become quite challenging for me is some of these grocery stores. Some of the negatives shopping this store are some really rude elderly patrons. I'm sorry if everyone else is patiently waiting for one of two open checkstands to process all the shoppers waiting to check out, please don't think I'm going to allow you to brazenly cut in front of me as if I'm going to kow tow and show some elderly respect/piety towards you. Also, I don't know if it's an innocent in nature or intentional by the cashier who rang up my three bags of bok choy, but she first bagged them all up in a plastic shopping bag, then weighed the produce for total sell price. I'm unsure if the scale automatically includes a tare weight (for the bag). Is this to scam the shoppers, or just the cashier trying to be efficient by pre-bagging my produce to save time before weighing. This grocery store is otherwise called Thuận Phát and it's probably the largest and cleanest Vietnamese grocery store I know of as someone who grew up going to Vietnamese grocery stores. They have more varieties of fish sauce and rice paper (bánh tráng) than I have seen anywhere else. And they had samples of bánh bột lọc when I went today! The lady preparing it was welcoming and explained the vegetarian and meat options she had available to try. They have a huuuuge selection of items. The produce is fresh and abundant, with all the ingredients I need to make all the traditional Vietnamese dishes I want to make. It's also so convenient that they have prepackaged sets of vegetables for canh chua (sweet and sour soup) and precut vegetables like kabocha and bitter melon. They have a handful of containers of salted fish (mắm) too, which I have never seen laid out like that before, in any establishment. Recently, I was surprised to find some bottled instant nước mắm, which my mom is most curious to try. With a large parking lot and even larger selection of ingredients, I'll be back again as soon as I run out of the many, many things I purchased today. read more

Plus, they carry other veggies, meat cuts and offal that can't be found at chain grocers. The meat is a bit expensive (normal price), but I saw frozen shrimp for $3 a lb. They have the special new bae fish sauce by tway that the other ones don't have for 9.99. I got kosher salt and rock sugar for 1.99. The registers are an interesting round shape and tight but the aisles in the store have enough space. They accept credit card! Shopping carts look dirty and wobbly. Put that all aside and you'll find a lot of random gems. - $12.99 /lb for live lobster. We got a 3 lb guy! - So many fruits & veggies; jackfruit, melons, Korean pears, mangoes, plantains, etc. - Live fish you can choose - Dozens of brands of fish sauce, soy sauce, a full aisle of spices and DIY sauces to experiment with at home(!) - Asian cookies and snacks - So many teas!! I've picked up a few as well as the one cup cappuccino and thai tea mixes. I come often for ingredients for Filipina foods, but end up buying fresh meats and veggies as they have such a large and quality selection that you don't find in the regular stores like Vons or Ralphs. This large supermarket has a good selection of many Asian grocery items. If you are looking for Asian vegetables, you can usually find them here. There are many aisles, each dedicated to noodles, spices, grains, tea,... You can also get fish and meat here as well although I find the customer service to be below average. The Hispanic employee at the fish counter does not seem friendly. He does not look like he even wants to be there. The store is clean and enjoyable to walk around to browse through unfamiliar items. I was able to discover new things to buy in the frozen aisles and spice sections. Most customers are Asian like Vietnamese although I see quite a few non-Vietnamese. It's been years since I've been back and here comes another incident. Your Cashier, particularly Mrs. Thao from register number 3 at 1:05:38 PM definitely need to learn how to treat customers evenly. We were standing behind a Caucasian couple and she greeted them with cheerful tone and seems to be a great customer service from bagging to checking out and all that. When it is our turn, she turned her faces. My mother offered to bag the item since we have a lot and while doing so we need bags to put them in, and we sort them out by type (like meat, seafood, veggies, containers, etc.). Now SF offer free bags, so the cost of bags are taken into account when charging customers with their products. At the last item, packaged pork blood, the item was leaking blood outside and we do not want it to leaked on the car, so my mom asked her for one more bag. Thao then give an attitude and scolded her that she "took so many bags", attempting to pull the bag back. We gave our reason same as above and she stated that the pork blood will be okay on its own (while its technically leaking out). Personally, I work retail too and we also offered free bag, but we do not question customers or give them an attitude because they took so many bags. We would want their business, to have them come back and spend more money on us. But the way Thao did her job is not acceptable, especially when there is no market rule to limit bag (or no notice being put on). Customer like us are paying the market for the market to pay her, not for being scolded at and left angrily. If free bagging is a problem then start charging it, we will not question and will pay the fees. How does Thao feel when her cart is full of items and a leaky pork blood is leaking all over them? Wouldn't it be nice? When the transaction is over, she gave us change and said that "its new money", not even a "thank you" or "come again" like the customers before us. New or not we are using the bills anyway, so it does not make a different. This market is pretty decent. Their groceries are far cheaper than most American grocery stores out there. They carry a large selection of produce. We went to town with their veggies. As for the meat, their ground meats are super affordable. We bought plenty to freeze throughout the week for quick meals. We spent over $100 worth of groceries here which lasted us for 2 whole weeks. We were honestly very satisfied with our groceries. The lines to check out can take awhile, so be patient. Overall a pretty decent spot to pick up groceries. Used to go to this grocery often. It's in a great location on beach Blvd. There you got a variety of Asian food & snacks. However, it happens to have bad odors from meat & seafood section. Some staff can barely use English to communicate. The rice bags, fruits & snacks around cashier looks unorganized and messy. Since last year, the store changed closing time from 9 pm to 8 pm. Unlike other groceries, it's very frustrating security stopped all customers from entering as early as 7:45 pm regardless. But the all your website showing this store closes at 8 pm? read more

Great selection of all the Asian products I grew up with and everything is very organized! What I love most is all the fresh produce, they take great care when putting items out and the prices are phenomenal! I am able to knock out a ton of items on my list pretty quickly and checkout is fast. I haven't purchased any meat or seafood from this location but I've heard great things about it. The only downside is the lack of carts. Usually, if you need a cart, you have to search the parking lots to get one. People don't ever put them back and I don't think they have employees who periodically bring them over. Even with a ton of Asian supermarkets nearby - I choose this one. Huge Vietnamese grocery store that stretches a whole block. Super bright, super clean, I mean... it's a grocery store. I love this store. If you've been to other Asian LARGE supermarkets (no, not the normal-sized Korean or Japanese grocery stores), most of them feel like dirty warehouses, where it is not surprising to find the occasional cockroach or flies buzzing in a random aisle. I usually only frequent the Asian mega supermarkets when I'm hunting for specific hard-to-find Southeast Asian items, like Indonesian "kecap", frozen durian, or peanut snacks that only "locals" would ever eat. So it was a pleasant surprise when I came across Westminster Superstore this month. I live in Santa Monica, so the only reason I found myself in this neighborhood, an hour way, is that my son takes parkour lessons down the street, and while he's in class, I take the time to venture about. I love this store so much, I've been back here at least 6 of the last 7 times I've come for my son's classes. I found almost everything I didn't know I missed since I lived in Asia. Every prawn cracker, frozen durian, Indonesian spices, Hong Kong juice packs, etc...... AND, the store is pristinely clean compared to its peers. The other place I venture to is in downtown LA, and I literally always feel the need to wash my hands, or take a shower, and scrub each grocery item, whenever I visit. Not so with this place.
