    Shoyu Ramen with Pork Belly

Update since my last review... back in 2015! Tokyo Central is where the old Marukai used to be. Everything has been upgraded - the store is newer, brighter, shinier! Sure, prices have caught up with inflation - but not by much. Prices here for fresh sushi/sashimi are very competitive compared to your sushi restaurant. The biggest draw/benefit since the Marukai rebrand/refresh? THE EPIC FOOD COURT! Literally, one of the best Japanese/Hawaiian prepared food offerings in Orange County. You've got everything from fresh sashimi party trays, to fresh cut sushi and hand rolls, all sorts of Japanese style sandwiches (egg salad, chicken katsu, etc.), fresh bakery breads, mochi, bento boxes featuring teriyaki chicken to chicken karaage, ramen bowls (these are amazingly good for store-bought ramen), poke bowls, and a hot food buffet bar - $10.99/lb. Service is always a plus, from the friendly security guard (whose been there since they were Marukai), to the cashiers that remember to offer you chopsticks. Store environment is clean, uncluttered, plenty of spaces to roam around. Parking sucks - especially if you come during lunch time and/or the weekend. Check out my photos!

This is my second Time at Tokyo central and my first time at this location in Costa Mesa. It is a big market with absolutely everything you can imagine. From the seafood department to the meat department, to the produce department. And so much more. Everything looks fresh and the displays are well presented. I've never been to Japan but i can imagine that i would find a lot of the same products in a Japanese market in Japan. The store is lively with a nice energy. The service is friendly. I did not purchase anything this time as i was accompanying some friends but I recommend checking it out.

I love it here! So many snacks, groceries, and food to buy. I always look forward to the fruit Sandos (10/10) about $5 ish dollars. The hot food is delicious! Service is fast and it's such a fun place to get lost in and explore. They have a seating area where you can eat what you bought.

I work down the street and whenever I don't bring lunch for myself, I end up here. In terms of fresh food, most people go for the sushi (which is great) but don't sleep on the hot food bar! My favorite is the unagi fried rice. Hits every time Another thing I've noticed is they are always well-staffed! So annoying when you go to a grocery store and it's busy but they only have 2 check out lanes open. This tokyo central location always has 4+ lanes open which makes it easy to get in and out for a quick lunch. Appreciate the team here!

I've been shopping here for years, but during COVID, I just didn't have time to wait in the lines that went around the block AND the parking here is horrible and not enough. I used to shop on my Friday off around 3 p.m. before people would get off work and at least I could get a parking spot. However.... fast forward to all the new Asian markets popping up in Irvine, Huntington Beach and vicinity. It's easy to get in and out of Tokyo Central and slide into a parking spot. Most likely NOT a good thing for business here, but for now, it works for me. Everyone has seemed to flock to the new Asian markets. The quality of Asian items here is still good, IMO and they do have a nice variety of whatever you're looking for (not massive, just enough) The to-go fast food items and sushi are always filled and they do discount what's left at the end of the day. Note: Their poke and Hawaiian style (marinated) is always fresh and delicious. Also, poke is poke and the bowl isn't filled with unnecessary non-poke items. You can get a decent bowl (which is packed in a square container) for $13 and with all the poke joints popping up, I'd say $13 is a very reasonable price. At some, I've paid as much as $31 for, which do NOT even compare to TC's $13 option.

If you are looking for fresh sushi, sashimi and poke, this is the place to be. They have a food sold for $10.99 per lb. Personally, I still like Mitsuwa better as they have food stalls inside.

I love going to Tokyo Central and picking up groceries and some of their prepared dishes. Their poke is very reasonable and quite generous with fish for the price. Their hot bar is also very popular ($10.99 per lb - don't miss the karaage chicken), but they are constantly replenishing it. This store is very big, with a huge selection of ramen, sauces, produce and much, much more. The only reason I don't give it five stars is that it's a little on the dingy side and the presentation looks a bit messy. It lacks that clean uniformity of an H-Mart, but I think it's the look that the chain (along with Marukai Market) go for.

    Jenny L.

I love the wide selection of bento and Japanese's beverage here! Price is also reasonable.

This was my first time visiting this location. I've only ever been to the Yorba Linda one but I was pleasantly surprised by the ample selection of fresh fish and ready-to-go lunch items here. I picked up a variety of nigiri for lunch, and they even have tables if you want to dine in. I usually go to Mitsuwa in Costa Mesa for fresh fish or whenever we're doing carpaccio night, but I'm happy to see that this location offers even more options. Bonus: they also carry a nice selection of Japanese skincare products if that's your thing. Definitely worth checking out!

Tokyo Central in Costa Mesa may have convinced me to move to South California. This place was loaded with good premade food. A lot of choices and prices are better than North California. Why is this place so much better than the Tokyo Central in Cupertino? Thank you for blessing us with good food for the long trip back.

Wow this place is great!!! I love Mitsuwa Market but Tokyo Central is waaaay better! Great selection of Japanese food items. Great prepared food section. Great fresh fish and meat. Very competitively priced. 1000 times better parking. No food stalls but they do have a great hot food bar by the lbs.

They have a vast selection of Japanese goods!! I was able to stop by today and try the popular egg and soy sauce packet that is really popular in the Don Quijote stores in Japan and it was so good!! They have great prices on meat here and I love how they discount the hot foods in the evening. I highly recommend coming here to try some authentic and tasty flavors of Japan!

The grocery is good for what to expect for any Asian market but the main attraction is the food court. It may not seem like much but all of them are really good and would fill up your hunger instantly. My favorites from the top of my head are the Katsu Don if I remember correctly and the Udon section where you pick your tempura (don't know the exact name). Overall good place to eat lunch or even dinner. Another problem would be finding a seat since there's hardly any tables and your plate is pretty big and bowls are heavy so you have to be somewhat quick to find a seat. The ambiance is fine but that's kind of to be expect in any supermarket, which is usually crowds talking and all. I really don't have much to say. Ever since this place closed down the anime shop, the DVD store, and bookstore, this place pretty much lost what made Mitsuwa special and worth visiting. Especially for someone who's into both anime and tokusatsu like Super Sentai (Japanese Power Rangers). Those places are what got me my first Gundam model kit (Freedom Gundam from Gundam Seed) and my go to place for Japanese DVDs as mentioned (Gokaiger, Kyoryuger, and Nanoha). I understand why they close down these stores, especially with streaming services and online shopping are a thing, even though I don't fully agree as they are customers like me that would prefer in-store physical copies. That is why I deduct one star. These are replaces with a gachapon store, a Matcha store, a Boba store I believe and Daiso. The matcha and boba place (forgot the names sorry) are surprisingly good. I really like the matcha ice cream in a bowl and I believe the Doncha. The gachapon I cannot say as I never spend money there and I'm not into these gacha machines and I rarely buy anything in Daiso as its just your typical convenience store that sells some Japanese stuff so I won't say much. In conclusion, it's a very nice spot to eat Japanese meals and especially something to fill you up for the day while also shopping to buy Japanese food to cook at home. Just be aware this is pretty pricey, especially the Royce matcha chocolates and the food court.

Seems to me, it is less crowded than other markets. (If I can avoid crowds, I will). It was Tet New Year season and I needed to get a few ingredients for some dishes I planned to cook. My first priority was the fresh oxtail in the meat department. I have gone to many markets for this cut and it seems this is the best place for a ~2 pound tray of mixed size tails. The fat is all trimmed off, as opposed to other markets that leave a fat layer behind that you are paying for. It also depends on if you prefer leaner tails. Next, the produce section. I picked up some cailan (Chinese broccoli). For the most part, the Asian veggies are pretty fresh - since there is a higher turnover rate of Asian veggies in this area. It was good on this day. So many varieties of green veggies, I love it! The fruit section is also pretty impressive. Papayas, guanabana, dragon fruit, pommelo, tangerines, korean pear, manzano bananas,...Not your ordinary apples and oranges. Dry goods include a plethora of rice, including Thai sweet rice, Japanese rice (perfect for sushi rice), red rice (known for high fiber and low glycemic index)... Who likes Chinese Style sausage? Me! It is called Lap Xuong, in Vietnamese. I love making Thai sweet rice and serve with thinly sliced Lap Xuong - my mom fed us kids this often! And yes, they have a good supply of this here, so stock up, it will last forever in the pantry. Vietnam is the world's second largest coffee producer. You will see the crazy amount of coffee products sold here, for example, Vinacafe. Most are packed as individual serving packets which includes cream and sugar. Too convenient for consumption! Also perfect to have in your pantry. You shall be impressed with the chili aisle. Sambal of all kinds. You can make an awesome pot of chili with this heat! Lots of Lunar New Year items too. I am sure there are still some left for purchase if you didn't have a chance to pick some up yet. They do have a liquor department too. Asians can drink iykyk. If you do, please don't drink and drive. Parking is ok, if you go shopping off peak hours. Market is on Beach Boulevard and it could get pretty busy so plan wisely. So enjoy your visit. The store itself is smaller if you compare it with places like Shun Fat Westminster Superstore or Hòa Bình supermarket. There is only one checkout counter and the staff all seem to be Vietnamese. After walking around, they pretty much have all the basics covered. The focus is Vietnamese and Southeast Asian ingredients and sauces. They have their own seafood and meat counter with number tags where you can ask them to clean or cut fish, plus a small deli to go section. I also noticed their delivery vehicle outside that says wholesale, so it seems like they also supply restaurants in the area. Overall it feels like a neighborhood market that also does some wholesale business. The fresh section looked clean and there was no strong smell. I happened to see ground pork on sale for $2.49 per pound. The regular price was $2.79. Of course I had just paid $3.99 per pound earlier that day at 99 Ranch in Irvine because I wanted convenience. While we were there, a Vietnamese lady next to us was buying a big pile of meat and seafood and chatting with us while waiting for it to be cut. She said she always shops here. She ended up buying the last of the ground pork in the display. We asked if there was any left and the butcher said he had more in the back, so we immediately decided to grab two pounds. I think this place is perfect if you do not want to push a cart around a huge store and just need to pick up a few items quickly. They are open until 8pm. Next time I have more time I will come back and explore a bit more to see what other interesting things they carry. Inside, it has a decent selection of items. I didn't notice that usual strong fishy smell you sometimes get in Vietnamese markets from seafood or raw meat, so it felt fairly clean and well maintained. Seafood and meats looked fresh, but prices are higher compared to other Asian markets. The produce section looked fresh as well, just on the expensive side. There is a small prepared food section in the front for quick takeout. Even with the higher prices, it's still a convenient place to shop. Not too big, easy to get in and out, and you can find most basic things you need.
