Not sure if this place is considered one of the largest dog parks in the US, but it might be. According to the Westminster Hills website, It has 470 acres of open space for your pup to roam freely. My pup and I live in NoCo so it's a bit of a drive for us, but I love taking her to new spots so she can explore new places and scents. I'm glad we made the trek here to check it out. We visited on a Monday around 1pm and there was plenty of parking available; It's also free to visit! There's a couple portapotties at the entrance and spots to grab some baggies if you forgot them at home. It's an open natural area so there's signs at the trailhead with warnings of rattlesnakes and coyotes so keep that in mind as you're exploring to keep an eye on your pup. We stayed for about an hour and she loved every minute of it, but it was a really windy day so we called it a day earlier than anticipated. I'm thankful we spent the afternoon exploring this beautiful area together. read more

This is a great leash free trail! It does get steep in areas and it does get hot so make sure your water and your pup's water is easy to tote. Be aware there's water so you might need a towel for the ride home. read more

Best dog park in all of Colorado. As a human you'd want to stay on the trails because the grass is tall and there are a lot of hidden spikes from cactus that are small and hidden. ALSO!! If you dog likes water there is a small river/creek that the dogs like to jump in and out This park is huge and there are tons of walking trails so everyone fits and has fun. The weekends get super crowded especially Sundays so parking will be hard but during school hours you are safe tons of parking! Please pick up after your dog and leave no trace. read more

Awesome open, off-leash park for dogs! We took our dog for his birthday and he loved it! After recent snowfall, it was still a bit chilly but the snow was pretty much gone - that didn't stop anyone else from bringing their dog! We didn't explore much, just the main area after parking (Simms St). We plan to go back closer in May when they open the creek! Be careful if you're entering/leaving as there is no gate at the entrance! (Not sure if they're redoing or not). We saw quite a few dogs run back into the parking area after they were let off-leash. read more

This is a great open space off leash park. There's miles of trails to explore and now there's a paved path running east/west, which was perfect since my 4 year old decided he didn't feel like walking after we'd parked. Luckily I was able to pull out his stroller and release our VERY excited pup and take everyone for a nice walk. A few things to keep in mind: 1. There are at least 2 parking lots 2. There are only port-a-potties, but they are usually well maintained 3. There isn't much shade, and it can get HOT 4. Bring water for yourself and your pup 5. Finally did the 30-minute drive up to Westminster Dog Park, and it was totally worth the trek! Took my two huskies and met up with a friend and his dog. At first, I was nervous that the Simms St entrance (haven't been to the other one) is ungated, but you can just walk further up the hill before unleashing your dogs. I was surprised to see plenty of parking around 10am on a random Saturday, unlike Cherry Creek Dog Park. Several spots for the dogs to go swimming, though be careful walking towards the ends of the park. Where we went had deeper water that make it impossible for dogs to pull themselves out. I learned that the hard way. Overall super chill, both for dogs and humans. I really like the community that's in this neighborhood. Definitely going to explore more of this expansive space, whether it's sunny summer or chilly winter! read more

This was my 1,201st Yelp review. I am glad that it could be of a place that I (and my dogs) enjoy so very much. The Westminster Hills Off-Leash Dog Park is huge, ginormous, and bigantic indeed. I had been told that it was a mile by a mile. For those who don't know, this means it would be 640 acres, or a full section in size. The City of Westminster website burst my bubble, by revealing that the actual retail price, without going over, was a paltry 420 acres. It had a hard to believe that a place this big and nice does not charge for admission or parking. The area is mostly fenced, and features a dog drinking fountain during the warmer months. There are dog waste bag dispensers, a few benches, a small amount of shaded areas, and port-o-lets near the parking area. What really makes this place magnificent, aside from sheer size, is the varied terrain. This place is ideal for hiking with your dog for longer periods of time. And, there are flatter areas, hills, and even a water canal for a good part of the year. The dogs swimming pond has never been operational during the two years that I have been going here. The dog walkers, hikers, bikers, and dogs themselves, are generally nice and fun people and fur-persons. Unless your dog is completely anti-social, they can always find an appropriate park buddy for the day. read more

This is our go to dog park! It is huge with lots of parking and places for your pups to play. During the summer it has a small creek that runs through it. I have heard of snakes in the area during certain times of year so always be cautious of that. There isn't much shade or places for water so be sure to bring some if your dog gets hot. It is fenced but the fence opening doesn't have a gate on it so be sure to have voice control over your dog or do not unleash them until you are far away from the entrance if that is a concern for you or your dog. Went for the first time a few weeks ago--it's literally on the other side of Denver. But TOTALLY worth the hour drive!!!! The park is HUGE, the human dog parents wonderful and responsible with their dogs, so it was safe for us to have our dog there, and the canal/creek. Oh my goodness, THE CREEK!! Much different that Cherry Creek Reservoir (don't know one is better than the other, just different). This is narrower, a bit shallower and more contained (harder to get into the water to get to your dog, but fewer places for your dog to go), and all of the dogs LOVE IT!! It looks like there's a smaller fenced area, but most of the park is unfenced open space. Our dog is a mutt of breeds that are Uber-high energy, among the smartest, and some of the most stubborn. Two are considered difficult to train. Despite her advanced training, her brain flips a switch at the entrance to a dog park, and she becomes full on Aussie and Jack Russell--knows her job (PLAY! show off and herd all the other dogs), in no need of human guidance as she was bred to do these things and think them through on her own! The goofy, fun loving Pit Bull part has already fallen in with the other two breeds and is having far too much fun to hear anything. Besides, she's only 1/3 of the formula, and the other two insist on being in charge! The rest of the breeds are too minuscule to have a vote! But at least at Westminster Dog Park, over by the water, it's a little bit easier to keep her contained. We look forward to going back and exploring more of this massive open space, dogs permitted off leash everywhere, park... after some additional practice w/recall and ensuring there's fresh Filet Minion at the ready! read more

This is my all time favorite dog park in the Denver Metro area. As you walk in you see rolling hills, a little stream & the mountains in the distance. This is a great park for getting a bit of exercise with the trails ascending and descending through the beautiful scenery. Our dog loves jumping in the stream to rescue his ball. On the weekends you can find a Dog Food Truck that offers some great treats for your friend. I used to think of this place as dog heaven. And for anyone who has taken their pup here, you know why. We took our lab mix rescue, Luna, here almost every week for 3 years. Last week we had to say goodbye to our sweet girl. She had a massive inoperable brain tumor that spread to her lower spine. Two months ago she was normal, now she is gone. She was 7. She used to drink the water and eat the grass along the creek with the other dogs. Cancer is common in dogs, but yelp reviews of dog parks citing cancer is not common. We wish we had known about the nuclear weapons facility that used to be next to the dog park along with it's history of plutonium smoke fires and toxic waste leaking. We wish we had known that studies showed the highest density of plutonium contamination was directly east of the plant (where the dog park is). We wish we had known that this amazing valuable property was converted to open space because it was deemed unsafe for housing. We wish we knew the creek in the park was part of water resources that is no longer fit for human consumption. We wish we knew people nearby had to sign waivers when they bought real estate. The park isn't marked in any way to warn you, so consider this your warning to google Rocky Flats before adventuring. Make sure to read for awhile too as there are some strong opinions on both sides to hear before deciding for yourself. read more

I love this dog park but I am so confused as to why Westminster City has taken most of the trash cans away because "they were over filled"!! It seems to me that a smart manager would recognize the need for either more trash cans or more frequent trash pick ups. If there were more doggie bag stations and trash cans throughout the park, I bet there's be far less poo left everywhere. Please help people be able to keep our park clean by considering installing dog poo bag stations and more trash cans (I've been told that city park employees ride around the park. If you're looking for a very large dog park then this is it! It's super big that you can do a nice walk/hike inside. I went for about an hour following the different pathways. I would say the only downside is that there is no shade so in the summer it gets very hot. I recommend going more fall winter spring time frame. For parking there's multiple different parking lots. I went on a Saturday and the parking lot was about 3/4 full. I could definitely see the parking getting limited depending on time of day/if it's a holiday weekend. There was also a bathroom in the parking lot which is very convenient. My pup loved it though so next time I'm in the area I definitely would come back here. read more

I hesitate like so many to post another amazing review about this park simply because I don't want it to get any more mobbed. Pretty sure the cat is already out of the bag on this one. This is a dog paradise! Miles of walking trails and endless acres of fun for you and your pup! The entrances get a little mobbed with dogs and their owners, but once you push past the I initial welcoming committee it opens right up into expansive beautiful walking spaces with the backdrop of the rockies! I recommend checking out the parking lot Aaron the south end of the park, tends to be a little less crowded. Weekends tend to be super busy, and obviously the nicer the day the more packed this hot spot is. It's open from sunrise to sunset and is loosely fenced in but is by no means meant to keep a runner housed. Pups can easily escape through the fence that is meant more as a birder than containment. Your pup will need to be well controlled by voice command and you'll still need to carry a leash with you just in case. If your pup likes to run along side with you or your bike you can do that all here as well! It gets a little chilly in the winter months and the exposure here is more intense as it's closer to the foothills. Also watch out for coyotes and snakes...just like any other park in Colorado. I've also noticed the dog owners at this park tend to be courteous and in general have well trained and well loved pups. Couldn't recommend this spot more, so get out there and explore! read more

We love, love, love Westminster Dog Park - for all of the obvious reasons, of course. Simply said, there's a lot of space. Lots of area to let your pooch run, sprint, roam and meander without feeling too nervous about anything weird, odd, or random (in not the good way) happening... Most owners seems cool and understand that dogs "playing" often means "using their voices" and it's all just play... let the dog be a dog, I say! There's a hidden small lake in the way back forty - technically not part of the park (but it's own Open Space), but easy to get to and can help round out a 6 mile hike when you're wanting to cover some land. Love the older trees and the streams, too... and now, as it's Spring, the wildflowers and prairie dogs abound... or, are those gophers? I think they're p-dogs, super cute either way and always chirping to announce your passage through the area :) The only odd thing about this park and as a recent transplant from Texas, this may be totally normal and status quo, but until I better understand, this odd detail seems weird.... as I'm walking the pooch, I routinely see green poop bags along the trail. I imagine that maybe on your way back, it's understood that you pick them back up, but at times, I have seen what looks like really weathered poop bags, sitting quietly (and still neatly tied up) along the path. They don't seem to accumulate, so I imagine folks do come by and gather them, but as a camper, this seems odd. I'm a "pack your stuff in and pack it out" kinda gal... what if you randomly forget? Interesting.... Other than that, I love this park! I do wish there were additional poop stations located in other areas in addition to the front entrance, but that's all :) read more

This is the funnest dog park I have been to! I live in So Cal and was visiting my daughter & her muppet. Every other dog park I have been to is either dry or just dirt, the dogs dont interact much and the owners are more concerned with gossip than caring for their often unruly dog! Not here! ALL the dogs were having a blast at the canal chasing each other in and and around the canal over and over and over and ...... owners were all very friendly and most were interacting with the dogs instead of each other which is as it should be! Tons of open fields, no fences and far enough from the road that there is very little to worry about while pup runs and runs We noticed several trails going around the fields and into the hills, but we didnt explore. We were too busy having a blast watching all the pups playing and chasing at the water If I were going to nit pick it would be that the canal banks are pretty muddy and as a result the water is too, but Im sure its from dogs constantly running in and out Definitely take an old towel for fido because he will be a very happy very tired very wet and dirty pup, but its worth it! I thought it might be some paranoid, end-of-the-world BS, but I've spent the last few days reading everything about Rocky Flats, and it's another Chernobyl. I cannot believe the park is where it is, and there are no warnings about it. We love the park, and my dog will be devastated - heck, I am! - but that is so not worth the risk. Very sad. Update: 6/26/2014 We have not been back in over a year. Breaks my heart, but there is no way I could go there with this knowledge now. If something happened to my pooch down the line, I would never forgive myself. I don't mean to be a doomsday speaker, but do your research and make a decision - that goes for all things in life! We are responsible for ourselves. :) **************************************** I simply can't say enough good things about this park or love it more than I already do. The Dog agrees. Tips for new four-legged kids and humans: 1. Bring a towel in your car. Your dog will get dirty on his own and/or with the help of others. 2. Watch where you're stepping. Go check out this dog park! This was our first trip and we came back again the very next day even though it was raining. This place is HUGE!! Good sized parking lot. There are water fountains, trash cans, and a lost and found board just inside the entrance. You enter into a big dirt open space and have your options of trails. Just over the hill ahead of you is a canal that runs through the park. Plenty of water flowing through in July providing about 6-12" of water in areas. A walking bridge leads over the canal at one point to more trails or you can stick around this area and check out the pond! The pond was our favorite part, our dog was in Heaven! At times there were herds of happy dogs chasing balls and sticks or each other in and out of the water. I love the signs that warn "No Swimming. Dogs Only." Our dog stands about two feet tall and there were a couple small areas he couldn't touch. If you get near the pond with your dog you will get dirty! These dogs are having a blast and they will splatter mud on you as they dart by. After my dog took a dip we walked the trails beyond to the west and up the hill on our first visit. The views were beautiful! Off trail there are some cactus and foxtail plants so be aware if your dog likes to roam. We looped around along the south edge back toward the pond. As I mentioned it was raining during our visit the following day and it made for a muddy experience! That sure didn't seem to stop anyone, there were plenty of people out with their dogs on the trails and at the pond. The dirt trails were a muddy mess but the trails with a little more gravel weren't as bad. Definitely dress appropriately and bring towels. Everyone I encountered was super friendly. The dogs got along great! One downfall is the only trash cans are at the entrance. So if you're a responsible dog owner you may end up carrying a poop bag around with you. We will be making the 20 minute drive here a lot, it's totally worth it! read more

I wanted to venture out to a new dog park this weekend. New smells for the dog, it always makes her happy when it's a new adventure. I didn't know what to expect so I was completely surprised when I realized the size of this park/open area. Like Cherry Creek this off leash park is lightly fenced so make sure your dog responds when you call them. There are multiple paths/trails to venture off on, everyone leading in a different direction. I'm pretty sure I walked for 2-3 miles and I still wasn't even close to the outer edge of the park. There is a small pond (see pictures(, it's standing water so it smells a little. The dogs love running in the water and fetching the ball and there are a few trees creating some much needed shade in a very sunny park. The park has a very natural landscape with beautiful views of the mountains. The park could use some more trash cans throughout the park not just by the entrance. My dog had a great time on her new adventure today and I can't wait to take her back. I recommend wearing sneakers, long pants, and a bottle of water if you plan on spending any time. I would gladly drive 20-30 minutes to come to this park. Top notch I tell you. read more

We have 3 dogs - they LOVE this park! It's HUGE! This is the very definition of "off-leash" park, the dogs are in their element here, they run their hearts out! We can walk for hours! Plenty of parking, great views of the flatirons and plenty of different terrain for everyone (skilled hikers to people who just want a leisurley stroll) it's the best dog park we have been to in Colorado. We've met many like-minded dog owners here and it's a great place to socialize your dogs... be careful though I have seen a few warnings of rattlers, I would try to stick on the trail....The only downside about this park is the trash situation (trash bins are located next to the parking lot) we always wait until our dogs finish their business before we start on a long hike... otherwise, you will be carrying it for a very long time. This is my favorite dog park that I recommend to every person I meet with a dog. It's so big and there's a river and a pond for the dogs to play in. It's also great because there are so any trails to go on an easy hike. Usually there are biodegradable bags there for you but often they have run out so make sure you bring some just in case. Ample poop bags, water runoff (seasonally) and trails to follow. I tend to follow the main ones and it's about 3 miles around. If I walk out of bounds to the other smaller lake and back I'll clock 5 miles. Definitely a walk or hike area more than a dog play area. But parking is ample. Signs are clearly posted. Dogs are well behaved as well as their owners. A must see if you are in the area. Trash cans are at the start of the park up to the creek bridge. After that you are responsible for your party's refuse. I always pick up extra dog bags for trash and bring it back to the entrance when I'm done. Pack it in pack it out y'all! read more

The water is back YAY!!!! Puppy is VERY happy about this as it's gotten into the upper 90s. The baby pool mom set up in the back yard just wasn't cuttin it. We love this place because it's so big and there is an awesome little pond a couple miles out. It's the perfect place for me to run and let little man run alongside and sniff all the magical things. ....however, we came to a sign a mile or so out today that stated you must put your dogs on leash past that point now. This was at the first gate, about a mile west of the entrance. What gives? Just a heads up everyone, we spotted a RATTLE SNAKE here today. Actually two, one alive and one dead, laying right on the trail. Keep your eyes peeled and keep your loved ones from roaming off the trail if you can. There are two types of snakes seen in this park, one poisonous (rattle) and one not (can't remember). I'm almost positive both were rattlesnakes but I'm certainly not a snake pro so could be wrong. I absolutely LOVE this park and have been taking my pups here for years! It's tons of space, has a creek, and is kept clean by owners and amazing volunteers. My only annoyance is, shockingly, with the people and not the dogs. If you are a runner or a bicyclist and you decide to run in an off leash dog park, expect dogs to chase you. Run/bike anywhere else in our beautiful state. There are plenty of other trails for you. Let those of us who don't have yards use this space for our dogs to play without worrying about them chasing you. Keep up the amazing work, clean up volunteers! We love this place! read more
