Staff was wonderful...Bed changed often meds given on time ..Physical therapy was scheduled for my care ..(however) they help my body become well ..yet the food need for nutrients...I have Never been to prison or a labor camp..thats how the Food was if that what you call it ..I was there..14 days /3x a day 42 meals..I was able to eat..half of 3 meals..l lived on baby yogurt and graham crackers..REALLY..it was SAD..my family..friend..neighbors and church members brought me hot meals and fresh fruit...lost 14 pounds (yeah) B Cuz I was hungry...I was there Dec 13 until Christmas Day ...No deck the Halls for Me. Seriously understaffed. No nurses ever at the Nurses' Station. Dinner = salad with salad dressing in a package AND dry tuna sandwich with mayonnaise in a package. Both packages cannot be opened unless the patient has scissors and patients do NOT have scissors. Do NOT recommend! read more

Possibly the best recovery & skilled nursing facility on the Peninsula. Definitely in the top 3. Have had two relatives stay here. Clean - very good food for institutional meals. Only breakfast & lunch are hot meals, dinners are sandwich & or salads, but high quality. Nice if not always thorough staff, who occasionally forget things. Good in house physician & physical therapists. Nice quiet location & aesthetic atmosphere. read more

This place has the most caring and wonderful nurses. My ex was in hospice here from 2/20 to 4/3 when he passed. They took excellent care of him, the food is terrific, and the setting is beautiful and serene. I can't say enough good things about this facility. read more

This is a very nice facility except for the extreme unprofessionalism from the care coordinator, Jessica. She does not return phone calls and can not give a straight answer if you just happen to get a hold of her. For 3 weeks I tried unsuccessfully to coordinate with her. Jessica added stress and wasted my time to what was already a very stressful situation with my husband's unexpected health issues. I am a very patient person and only under extreme circumstances would write a review such as this. Don't even try to work with her. read more

Long story shortened, my bladder and lungs got invaded with cancer and my former employer basically threw me away like a piece of trash despite my 22 years of service to his company, leaving me homeless and jobless. I am eternally grateful to Westland House for taking me in and providing a safe place for me to live. The Westland House staff treat me with kindness and compassion and I appreciate and love the staff very much and I want to make that known before I can't make it known. I going to fight this cancer, but if I lose the battle to the cancer, it will be known that Westland House in my opinion is a beautiful place with caring and beautiful staff members. The office experience was poor in this facility especially with the care coordinator, Jessica. There was poor communication and a lot of of retracted statements. My mother experienced rough treatment from some of the caregivers so when it was brought to their attention, they immediately worked to get her out of the facility. This is not a good place for people rehabbing if they're not self-pay. read more

The affiliated hospice aggressively recruits patients at the affiliated hospital. The hospice that runs Westland House tried to recruit Dad three years ago when he was hospitalized after a fall. Instead he came home and was able to live a decent quality of life. He received rehab and became ambulatory. Unfortunately he was hospitalized again last summer and this time another family member agreed to put him on hospice. This meant he got no rehab and is now bedbound. Hospice stepping in meant he was denied restorative care. It's been like pulling teeth to get them to treat his recurrent UTIs. It feels like they'd rather just let him die. It breaks my heart to see my Dad treated this way. read more

This is the Monterey Peninsula Hospice House that we are so fortunate to have in our community. My mother passed away at home, by her choice in January, but could have gone here with all the wonderful service staff. Beautiful peaceful environment amongst the trees and nature with serenity. I was hesitant about coming to a rehab facility after having back surgery. But glad I chose Westland House. Was very impressed with the facility. It was very homey feeling, everyone was very friendly and helpful in my rehab. If I could have stayed longer I would have. It was like one big family. I would highly recommend this facility. The food was OK but that was because my doctor put me on a diet of sorts, but I made it ok. Meds and food were on time. That is really something that on computer it brings up when the meds to be distributed. No fudging there. Thanks to all the staff for their help. read more

My sister and I were reluctant to send my mom here (due to covid-19) for rehabilitation of a vertebrae fracture, but we were told what a wonderful place this was. 5 stars and all....Let's just say it wasn't. My mom started vomiting when she got there and was like that for almost 24 hours straight. She had to ask them to send her to CHOMP because she wasn't feeling well. So, they sent her. Turns out she was having a heart attack! Nobody recognized the signs? I don't get it. Weren't they checking her vitals? Some of the nurses were very kind to her, but there were also ones that were rough and rude. They gave her food she wasn't supposed to have because she is diabetic, like...cake, cookies, juice, pancakes...what part of diabetic do they not get? The food looked old and soggy according to my mom. The only great thing here was her Physical Therapist Tony! If I was rating them just for physical therapy I would give them 5 stars. And maybe the fact that it has a beautiful setting and has some nurses that are truly caring. I am saddened that my mother had to go through all of this without the quality of care that a CHOMP facility should provide and was mentioned in other reviews. CHOMP itself was awesome and on top of things! I guess it's just a roll of the dice at Westland House. It's too bad. read more

This is ridiculous, I went to visit my mother and we had it all planned out from the staff to my mom and we called to get in and the receptionist Vanessa said there were no visitors, but the staff 20 minutes earlier said I can visit my mother??? I'm so frustrated wasted so much gas and time coming all the way from Santa Cruz and I am not ok with this. read more

Sure, this place looks amazing!!!!! However....... Within the first 3 days of my dad's stay here we were already seeing the cracks in the facade. My dad is on Parkinson's meds and they failed to administer them on time, or at all, during the first 2 days unless one of us (family members) requested it and gave proper directions. Also he was not getting the promised services (PT specifically) unless one of us demanded it, and they will not take any of the patients out of their rooms for a stroll unless someone requests it. Which may be OK for people who are totally bedridden, but for patients who are expected to improve within the 5 days they have decided it takes to be able to walk and talk again and be discharged that's not so good. I'll edit or add to this review after his complete stay, but I'd definitely stay on top of your loved ones' needs while they are here because the staff may not be doing it. read more

All of this facility's considerable resources are geared towards individualized attention to their patients. In this beautiful, serene setting, the amazing staff have perfected a coordinated effort to restore their patients' health with personalized care. Westland House is a place for people who have been patients at CHOMP, Community Hospital of the Monterey Penisula. It is located in a wilderness area on the South side of Monterey. It is a lovely facility with many rooms for patients. Most, if not all, have small views and patios. Meals are provided and physical therapy is encouraged. In fact, if you refuse the physical therapy, they kick you out. Oops. read more

The most AMAZING facility. Besides it's gorgeous views and large rooms Westland House boasts the most kind, efficient, knowledgeable and helpful staff (LVNs, physical therapists, RNs, CVAs and obviously one great manager)! The care here is superb, the rehab staff is phenomenal. read more

I was admitted to Westland House twice in the last two months for a total of about 3 weeks, and if I need that kind of care in the future, which is not unlikely, since I'm 87 years old, that's where I'll go. The setting is peaceful and beautiful. It's nestled in a very private wooded area, so the vista from my rooms was trees. Each room is bright, airy, large and private, and most have a private deck. The food is excellent. (But if you're like me, bring your own salt.) It was so good that my family elected to have lunch or dinner with me several times. The chef and staff are very accommodating. So much for the ambience and comfort. The reason one is there is a need for health care, and that couldn't be more competent and considerate. The rehabilitation therapists, speech, occupational, and physical, give care that is sensitive to one's needs and abilities, and with me they provided care that brought me back to my pre-illness capabilities in just two weeks. The nursing is excellent. I had a complex course of eye drops and medication, and the nurses didn't miss a thing. I was especially impressed that they sent me to the emergency room when I had an unusual pain that turned out to be a serious problem. (I was also impressed with the doctors at the emergency room at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula who, even though the pain had stopped, did numerous tests that finally revealed the problem, resulting in my second hospital admission.) If you live in or near the Monterey Peninsula and need a Skilled Nursing Facility, I would recommend that you elect to use Westland House. I don't think you will be disappointed. Westland House is a peaceful santuary amidst pine trees near MPC. We heard it was the best rehab facility. It needs improvement to protect patient rights, improve quality of care and promote patient safety. Maybe we should have known care had declined at Westland -- half of their beds were empty. First, Westland is very clever at dancing around Medicare rules to discharge patients it finds difficult. Fortunately, I have Medicare rules on speed dial. They attempted to discharge my mother inappropriately not once, but twice. On the first occasion, they almost allowed my mother (who was looped out on medication and whose dementia progressed during surgery) to discharge herself to CHOMP. I had to threaten the nursing staff and tell the Fire Department I declined emergency services as her durable power of attorney. The dirty little Medicare secret is that Westland doesn't have to take a patient back once they discharge to the ER. On the second occasion, they had the surgeon sign discharge orders before developing a discharge plan with the family (the nurses couldn't contain themselves and ran around spilling the beans to family members who promptly called me). Discharge planning is a Medicare requirement. Westland made us believe they were going to have a discharge meeting but behind our backs were processing the discharge the day before. Once you are discharged in the Medicare computer, there goes the public dollar. Westland would have had leverage to get Mom out lickety split. The Director of Nursing explained it away as a mistake when called on the carpet and said she would take care of it. We never saw this person -- sort of the Great Oz. Third, with a few exceptions (shout out to C and ML), the Westland nursing staff are not trained to handle difficult situations or crises. The evening my mother was very aggitated was because she was given the wrong drug (approved by the Director of Nursing); the nurse on duty called me in a panic. God help the patients if there is a fire. Fourth and perhaps the most eggregious is Westland's complete mismanagement of pain medication despite information from the family about drug reactions and mother's repeated complaints of pain post-surgery. By day two, we learned that Westland was not providing any regular dose of pain medication even after we had requested it. Unbelievable. They were relying on an 88-year old woman to tell them when she was in pain. What's even more concerning is that she was constantly articulating pain and they did nothing. The family requested and was assured a regular dosing schedule would be followed but it took nursing staff two days to implement it. I know because I called the nurse station when meds were due to find nurses unaware of the dosing schedule. Note: the last Westland Medicare review dinged Westland on pain management -- more people complained of having greater pain at Westland than the national average. Nursing staff mismanaged mother's pain medication which exercerbated her anxiety and aggitation. We said no MS-Contin. The Director of Nursing approved MS-Contin. We said no valium. The nurses threw valium at her. Etc., etc., etc. Fifth, Westland House is understaffed. On the night shift, there was one or two nurses on duty, dispensing pain meds, handling patient needs, etc. We won't mention the two-month old expired foods Mom was served -- November 2014 juices. Older patients who are aggitated or have difficulty advocating for themselves are not easy to care for. But if a rehab facility doesn't want to bother, they should reconsider why they are in the business of healing in the first place. Frankly, I think the only reason they accepted my mother -- who did receive excellent PT -- is because I called the care manager on their rep for being selective in who they take during a tour prior to my mom's surgery. Even then, they would only take mother if the family paid for 24 hour around the clock sitting services at $21 an hour. We agreed, once watching Mom's growing aggitation at Westland, that rehab at home was a good goal. But Westland's poor quality of care and non-compliant practices were unconscionable. The Medicare Ombudsman explained that Westland really isn't equipped to provide care for certain patients. Yes, but if they accept Medicare dollars, they are obligated to meet Medicare access and quality of care standards as well as honor patient rights. The CHOMP Board should review the practices at Westland for compliance. read more
