She was an independent woman, widowed, already in her 90s and hated to leave her San Francisco flat. She and the three other friends who moved there, were not particularly happy about the move and they all had lovely apartments with patios out to the street and celebrated many happy hours together. Over the years, I have visited Canterbury on many occasions; community events, and an open house as recently as 2015. I have been researching independent living communities for single women, for over 12 years. This is a pet friendly facility, and I saw two beautiful screened in porches, accommodating indoor only kitties. We visited a 1/1 and a 2/1, both totally remodeled apartments with patios. I have seen many poorly done and depressing remodels over those 12 years, but this was star quality, with ample light and storage, a large size kitchen, and European appliances. While there is no buy in, there is a one time membership fee and an average price for a single person at 7.5 K monthly, Had I not moved to VA six years ago to join family, I would definitely be considering this community.

I am so happy I decided on Canterbury Woods. Their nursing personnel are their greatest asset. I had a complicated med administration schedule with multiple overlapping medical diagnoses that would have caused havoc at a facility that wasn't as patient-centered and flexible. A culture of respect and care seemed to be strong at every level of the organization's structure. I observed administrators frequently interacting with staff and patients . The environment was homey, not clinical or stark. There were some oddities-such as the location of the shower facilities, but these were comparatively minor quirks. There was a bright activity room that encouraged patient interaction and an adjacent sunny flower filled patio available for patients. I was struck by the level and quality of staff-patient interactions and noted that the staff wasn't permanently attached to computers but focused on patients and their needs. A tech from CHOMP comes once a week to do blood draws, the in-house physician read my file before she saw me on her "rounds" She was observant, sensitive, listened , was compassionate, and did a good job coordinating my care. Some of the other highlights? The OT and PT staffs are superior. The food is incredible, and there is a set "comfort food" menu available for every meal service if the options on offer aren't appealing. I know I am forgetting something, but whatever it is most likely positive.

We were relatively young, 67 and 72, but we decided that it was important for us to find a place where we could live for the rest of our life in a secure and active community. We were impressed with the beauty of Carmel Valley, the sunny weather and close proximity to all of the attractions of the Monterey Peninsula. What became more apparent after our move in was the amazing sense of community and love of life that fills our lives here. The residents are active with a multitude of sports, games, special musical events, concerts, fascinating guest speakers, continuing education, painting, weaving, photography, plays, trips to local and bay area cultural events and many, many more. We are never bored and have made many friends which we cherish. We realize, that as we get older everything is in place for us to stay active and independent and when we need assistance it is always available. Equally important, our children are happy that they don't have to worry about us, can visit and stay in the on site guest units and will never be burdened with the trauma of trying to find a place for us in the event of stroke, or other major disabling illness, We like the fact that all facilities, independent, assisted care and the Skilled Nursing Facilities are all co-located allowing spouses who may be recuperating from treatment to take meals and visit together without worrying about transportation to an off site facility. I guess to sum it up. They seem to have thought about everything. Even the staff is like family, providing loving and attentive service every day. For us it's a great value and source of peace for our future. We are thankful every day that we decided to live here in a complete "Life Care Community" where our every need is provided for in all situations that may arise.

The staff is kind, caring, compassionate and professional, from Jordan our wonderful case manager and Janet who communicated well and kind enough to order all the necessary equipment needed upon my husband's release. We loved all the wonderful caring nurses, to name a few Josie, Maria, both Isabella's, Nathen, Gordon , Gabie, the friendly PT staff, and all the other kind hardworking staff, house cleaning, kitchen, lundry staff . Some residents get excellent care while others are all but ignored. The administration is inexperienced and lacks management skills. The food is awful with some of the worst tasting and poorly prepared food I've ever tasted. No attention is paid to balanced meals or special needs diets. Laundry service is an absolute joke. If someone can be found to wash clothes or bedding, it may take 24 hours or more to have it returned. The longer it takes to be returned the more likely it will be lost. Clothing will quickly deteriorate because no attention is paid to separating colored from whites and high heat is used to dry everything. On the bright side, the campus is beautiful, cleaning is skillfully handled, and there is an engaged activities director. Residents are friendly and easy to get to know.
