Being that today is Earth Day, I will be down to earth and review a park that is so well-themed and unique that it seems out of this world. That very park is Western Trails Park (the south portion is called Western Trails Equestrian Park). It is a unique park that has been serving Las Vegas and beyond since 2005.
This is a local park that brings in Las Vegans from miles away that visit it to enjoy the very unique western theme. I think that one of the reasons that Western Trails is so successful in charming people like me with its theme is on account of the fact that the surrounding neighborhood appears to be more like the Old West than the rapidly growing Wild West Las Vegas valley. It sits in a horse-zoned community where many of the homes are around an acre and are zoned for horses. This is a neighborhood where the major cross valley highway Warm Springs Road is reduced from six lanes to two and where large houses and open landscapes replace the 7-Elevens, Chevrons, Starbuck's, subdivision walls, and asphalt parking lots. It is a semi-rural stretch of Warm Springs Road where you will see a horse crossing sign instead of a 7-Eleven sign. This very neighborhood is ideal for a western themed park.
I think that that one of the nice thing about Western Trails is that it is in the south center of the valley in close distance to thousands of people, and travelers off Interstate 15 and 215-Beltway, yet feels a world away. And, I am one of those people that live close by.
Although I had passed by the fifty foot windmill landmark several times, my two visits in 2022 were my first two times here. The first time I explored the park proper and the second time, the park proper with the adjacent equestrian Park.
When it comes to parking, it can be a challenge because the parking lot is small. However, the adjacent parking lot serving the equestrian park is large. At any rate, I got a spot both times.
A few words that describe this approximately 7-acre park are "Old West," "horses," "semi-rural," and "charming."
Old West.
When I entered the park, it was under a wooden sign that looked straight from a western movie. From there, I walked straight to the fifty-foot tall windmill. This is the park's landmark. It was in the windmill's shadow where I was transformed into a mini Old West. The park planners attention to detail is commendable. The building holding the restrooms are a replica of a Western Main Street. The playground also blends in with this theme. Across from the restrooms the picnic tables are inside of carriage replicas.
Horses.
The southern portion of the park is all about horses. It is one of the major equestrian parks in Las Vegas. If you have a horse, it provides the essential amenities. Instead of a horse, I had my sneakers that led me along the western periphery of the equestrian park besides Cameron Street. Although, I passed over entering the gate to hike on a bridle path, I got to see a lot of the equestrian park from the Cameron Street walking trail that included an overlook with a few benches. At the time of my visit, I did not see any horses or the peacocks that reviewers have mentioned. The equestrian park is one component of the surrounding equestrian-zoned neighborhood.
Semi-rural.
This neighborhood is an oasis of tranquility in a wider area bounded by the bustling Blue Diamond Road corridor to the south, a sprawling business park with housing developments to the west, the 215-Beltway corridor to the north, and Interstate 15 with Las Vegas Boulevard to the east. The park proper's western (pardon the pun) area is dedicated to open green grass that includes a wash. However, adjacent to the park to the south is the open space of the equestrian park. When I took in the open spaces of the park proper and equestrian park, it was enough to relax my mind. This is not the open space where there is nobody around. It is surrounded by homes with large lawns.
Charming.
The aura of horses, Old West theme, and semi-rural landscape adds up to a charming park. The fact that I saw zero graffiti or vandalism, at the same that I felt safe really added to the charm of Western Trails Park.
When it comes to charming places, I want to return. As I write this in the Wild West of urban Las Vegas, I have a strong feeling that I will be returning to the nearby Old West of Western Trails Park in the future. read more
