We used to have one in Mount Airy years ago, and it was a treat to stop by this one on my way to Biltmore Christmas. Sirloin tips were very good. I substituted one of my vegetables, and paid $2 extra dollars for a huge salad. This brought back great memories. read more

Been eating at the Steer for years and should have done a review before but yesterday's Thanksgiving meal really made me realize it's past time to do one. This place is a landmark for Newton and the county. It has always had the highest quality in both service and product with fair and reasonable prices. You can go in and order off the menu or feast at the buffet. During the epidemic the owner added a drive thru window that has remained available. That's the service we use most of the time. Called in yesterday to order theee plates for our holiday meal that were ready in ten minutes. There was more than enough to fill up yesterday and we still have leftovers for today. There are a lot of good reasons why you'll usually find cars in the parking lot at this place no matter when during the hours they're open. read more

I am glad to return after over a year to find out the quality is still there! I sampled a little of everything off of the buffet and the fried chicken is some of the best I have ever eaten! Robin and her co-workers were always making sure our visit was the best and it was! I finished it of with a cup of complimentary coffee and some fine cookies and deserts! Very reasonable prices but as the old saying goes you get what you pay for. We found the buffet food to be very dry and not very warm and the service a bit inattentive. It was early on a Saturday afternoon- not the lunch or evening meal rush so no real reason not to see a waitress occassionally. First of all... overpriced! The food was mediocre. The only thing truly eatable was the salad from the salad bar. The baked potato was over cooked and not even warm. My kids said their pizza had a weird taste... it's because it was raw. This is the last time we will go after having eat there about once every few years in the past 5 years. So here's the deal. I drive a commercial vehicle for a second career. I criss cross the US continuously. I've had many many buffets and my photos can verify this and my glutometor will back my claim. It's an older building with southern hospital. The prices are not bad for a buffet and considering the food choices I'd say very fair. Lots of southern stuff to choose from. It's not the fanciest or nicest but it serves it purpose very well. Hey normally I would ding this place for having frozen greens but the smoked pork they had made up for it substantially. I'm part of a Prison Ministry group that meets here once a week. Always friendly, good food, plenty to eat and at a good price. The buffet is varied and appeals to many different tastes. Salad bar is outstanding as is the Dessert Bar. Plenty of locals frequent this place and for good reason as mentioned above. I've been part of this group for five years now and except for a short period of time when the restaurant was changing format, we've eaten here all of the time. I'm a picky eater and hate eating the same thing over and over again and yet I keep coming back if that tells you anything about a varied menu. read more

Oh my deliciousness. Southern comfort foods galore. Huge buffet with several types of chicken, ribs, pork, roast beef, ham, brisket and more. Mac n cheese, corn, mashed 'tators, rolls, cornbread, greens, okra and a bunch more were the sides. Add a huge salad bar and three areas filled with desserts and you have a a full belly. The desserts consisted of cobblers, cakes, cookies, pies, puddings and more and all of them did not disappoint. Especially the cobbler. We found this place on yelp because I am pregnant and was craving comfort foods and I AM SO GLAD we did. The employees and waitresses were all so sweet and welcoming and the buffet was full of choices and delicious. To WHAT do my wondering eyes appear....but wait!!!! It is a Western Steer Steakhouse! I had thought they were extinct. I know that these restaurants were the "thing" back when I was growing up (70-80's). My family and I always went out once a week for that awesome "steak house" dining experience. Such fond memories as a kid of having my hamburger steak served up on those oval metal platters outlined in a wood shell! As my husband and I entered the restaurant is was clean and inviting. We were greeted with a warm smile from the lady taking our drink and food order. They do sell individual meals other than buffet but we decided to take the buffet upon seeing all the wide variety of items they offered. We were there during the lunch hours. We were very pleased by the reasonable rate for the buffet of $8.99! So, with that being said there are so many good things I really need to figure out where to begin..... For starters, lets talk about the warm up to a great meal....Salad Bar. The salad bar was not as large as I have seen at other restaurants but the items they offered were what you wish for on a perfect salad. They offered regular iceberg mix salad greens as well as spinach. What I need to mention is they have shredded carrots on the bar. In restaurants, I have noticed so many are going with cut stubby carrots on their salad bars instead of the shredded version. Who has the time and effort to cut up those hard stubby carrots? I don't! So to me this was a HUGE plus. They also have a quite impressive area of the salad bar with Macaroni Salad, Pepperoni, and (YES) egg salad. ****I have never seen egg salad on a salad bar. I tried all of these. It depends on your mayonnaise taste buds as to your liking of these items. They also have two select soups. (not sure if they switch from day to day) I chose the potato soup and added cheese and scallions from the salad bar. I was really pleased! Main course, the Buffet! Wow, I took lots of pictures to try to give you an idea of the huge selections of choices with main course meats and vegetables. They had everything from fried and baked chicken, BBQ pork, hamburger patties in brown gravy, chicken wings, stew beef and gravy, and a few other main course dishes. Then in the side courses they had corn, collards, green beans, cabbage, macaroni and cheese, rice, mashed potatoes, gravy, blackeyed peas and snaps, and yams. Everything was fresh, hot and looking very appetizing. HONORABLE MENTIONS: BBQ pork- Coming from Eastern NC, I like my BBQ to taste more with a vinegar based sauce. I did not put any sauce but the seasoning was right on and the pork was very juicy and tender! Stew Beef and gravy - again very well seasoned meat in a wonderful brown gravy. Egg Salad - not too mayo'ee (not a word) just right! Croutons - Any salad bar you go to basically you're not sure what you are going to get with croutons. This restaurant I would bet they make their own. They were seasoned well and somewhat soft to crumble with a fork. If they are not homemade then I'd be surprise. Again, just my style! Steamed Cabbage and blackeyed peas with snaps- not much to say except tasty and perfect! Last but not least...Yams- I saved the best for last, literally! These were so good. Honestly, I can say the best I have ever had! After eating all the scrumptious listings above, hopefully you can find room for dessert. This restaurant has a huge dessert bar...selections are phenomenal! *** They have two styles of desert sections that are sugar free. This is a plus and hard to find in restaurants. They had fruits such as cantaloupe and red grapes. Cookies, cakes, and pies. And soft serve ice cream as well. They have cheese cake, strawberry short cake and banana pudding (A+). Plus I noticed in the cake slices about four varieties of pound cake! (Really?) Yummy double dose for us "pound cake" lovers!!!! All very moist, fresh. I asked for permission to take pictures of the buffet before doing so. I noticed on Yelp most of the reviews are about the Breakfast buffet, which I hear is also pretty good too! I wanted to show Yelpers the other side of the coin when it comes to food served at this location. The Manager came over, spoke with my husband and I about this restaurant. He was very friendly and informative about how the restaurant strives for excellence in the food quality and dining experience. In my opinion, it shows! Our waitress was on top of everything. She also added to our already pleasant experience we had. Folks bottom line, this place is, in my opinion, a gem of our long lost steak house restaurants that have gone away. Mine and the husband's experience is we dined having good quality food, great service at an even better price than the other "buffet" competitors. I hate seeing western steer go down hill but if they don't get someone in there to care how the buffet food is prepared it's going to cost them. Visited on Thursday April 4th for lunch and really disappointed as the bars were in messy shape and the food being 1/2 buffet and 1/2 breakfast and this was after lunch time after 1:00 pm. The green beans were horrible way to sweet and why in the world would you put sugar in green beans. The BBQ was watered down with no flavor, Mac n cheese and corn no flavor.. Is someone just making up their own recipes?? Surely not.. I brought up that the green beans were to sweet and my response back from the waiter after the person that does the cooking was told was "Did I want to put in an application? " Wow... I use to work for western steer a long time ago and the food was prepared 1 way and it was The Steers way .. Sorry to say we won't be back and until changes are made sadly there won't be a western steer after a while especially with food tasting like this. Sad :( read more

We love the options at this restaurant. The buffet always has items we enjoy. The biggest problem for us is over eating. During Covid we used the drive thru often. Great value and the fried Chicken is the best around. When ordering Fried Chicken thru the drive thru it's alway cooked fresh after ordering. read more

My family likes to eat here occasionally on the weekends. I can certainly do without it the food tastes very cheap. The buffet is not always the cleanest. Wait staff is unprofessional and can be annoying almost with how they talk to you. Have seen multiple people nearly fall because of the layout and way the restaurant is set up with mats. read more

Haven't been to a Western steer in a long time we got buffet, it was ok nothing great, salad bar was good and soup was good. Mac & cheese was bland chicken dry but hubby loved the beef liver and tea was good. Biggest reason for 3 stars is the floor was dirty need to be swept bad there was a piece of bacon which I'm assuming was from breakfast bar earlier in day laying on main aisle and everyone was walking up & down through there but didn't clean it up. Ok... been here a few times. The buffet is great. The wait staff has always been good. Last night though, the cashier was more interested in talking to another employee than our transaction. I have only been here twice and that's enough for me!!! The first time the food was sub-par to say the least..... I decided to give it another chance, WELL...... I regret that for $13 a person. I have been everything in a restaurant imaginable, from dishes to owner and I have to say this was low even for someone understanding as I am in the field. Desserts in bowls w/ water pooling from defrosting, dusty light fixtures, lights burnt out, Styrofoam dessert bowls, had to ask for straws (along w/ several other guests), burnt products being served, dirty landscaping (to compliment the new building paint), my mother ordered coffee which btw is made on a cup by cup basis (sounds cheap and instant to me), employees wearing dirty stained uniforms at the register, and to top it off....... dirty dishes, open drinks, and tobacco products in the one open food service area for the desserts with no employees present!!!!! I would have brought some of my concerns up with a manager but alas, I was there over an hour and never saw one. Get your S*** together and quit being so cheap!!!!! read more

It's a local version of a Golden Corral. The bathroom was horrible like in any other buffet place. The waitress was very attentive and kept my glass full of water. Their chicken livers were good and crispy. The sausage and peppers was good. They also have steaks to compliment your dinner but I did not have any. Most patrons made a v line towards the buffet. The place is very close to the Courthouse so I guess you can celebrate a favorable decision if you only have $8.00 in your pocket or go there for lunch while on jury duty.
