Skateland is an institution. I mean that generally, as we also had a Skateland where I grew up. Going to Western Skateland still makes me nostalgic. I'm kind of fascinated at how many ways the building has been used. What looks like a front door isn't, and when you walk in, there is a glass partition that looks like it used to be the place to check in. The inside is totally old school, which is probably one of the coolest things about it. Anyone who grew up going here can bring their kids and probably have the same experience. They sometimes host roller derby matches and host fund raising events, I think. There is a chance that off season, if you go when there is a lighter crowd, they may not be fully staffed, which stinks if you want a bite or a fountain drink. The outside does look very tired. There are pieces of metal on the building that were signs once, and the tarp with the name and logo of the business is badly faded. The music is usually really loud, so be ready! They play some fun games during open skate, but those can also vary depending on whether or not they are fully staffed. The 4 corners game is a fun way to win a piece of candy or two. Honestly We had a fun Saturday family activity a few months ago and I learned how to skate. It was more fun than being on a depressing computer. As Carla Delvinge would say "Los Santos! Large floor, great prices for admittance, snacks, and skate rental if you need to rent skates. Came on $2 Tuesday and there was a good mixed crowd. Some kids on the skate mates stumbling around but not too many where you can't skate easily. Floor was easy to navigate even with all the kids. Best place to go and skate the atmosphere is nice and calm sometimes people ruin it for others but that's that the staff are so nice a and yes the staff do care more about your safety because you can easily hurt yourself skating if you don't know how. read more

Western Skateland has a new owner that is changing the scene.... and it's amazing! Sarah truly knows the "meaning" of skating. She's competitive but fair while teaching. She can appreciate the local, "go around in circles and find your first hand hold, skating." She can appreciate that adults like to skate too! Rented the rink for 2 hours up to 10 people. Deal of the day!!!! the place was spotless. The young lady working was so accommodating. She was right on top of everything the kids threw at her. Wow, what a blast from the past. Family owned rink with OG neon retro decor, very down-to-Earth atmosphere, helpful staff. Many of the skating games from my childhood (limbo, but with Red Solo cups, dice game, shoot the duck, etc.) Would be nice to run some weekly themes: college, 80's, dance, hip-hop, country, adult skate nights. Most staff were welcoming and kind except one lady yelled at me for having an empty grape juice bottle in the side of my backpack and scolded me for setting a bad example for kids I was looking after. I was informed from other patrons that they had also had bad experiences with the woman that day. The lady seemed to be on a power trip which I did not appreciate and spoke to me as if I were a child. She informed me that she was not stupid and could see that I had a (empty) grape juice and that next time she expects the rules to be followed. Other than that it was really fun and enjoyable. But it's sad to think one person can ruin the fun :( read more

Stay Away...Incredibly unprofessional. The worst excuse for customer service I've ever experienced in Bloomington. Years ago this place was worth going to for a good time and friendly staff. I had the WORST experience here tonight. This is my third time at the rink, I believe the ownership has changed hands since the last time. There was a floor guard, a tall skinny woman, who was SO RUDE. The second we walked in, she screamed "FACE TO THE PUBLIC!!" at the young DJ. Then she noticed cotton candy that my son asked me to save for him inside my purse (I was not eating or touching it in any way). She screeched up to my seat on her skates, interrupted a conversation by yelling "THAT IS FOOD, I CAN SEE THAT IT IS FOOD, YOU NEED TO TAKE IT ALL TO THE CONCESSION AREA. DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!" I could not believe a younger person was talking to me this way. I saw her yell at multiple children and adults, once screeching up to a fallen disabled child and yelling at him to move along. Once yelling at a fallen and injured child's parent to LEAVE THE FLOOR. And the worst.... she actually roughy put her hands on a child while the mother was trying to help the small girl off the floor. The mother was understandably furious, and left the business immediately. When I went to the rental area to ask for the manager, I found out that this horrible person was THE OWNER. This is unacceptable and I will not be supporting this business in ANY WAY. read more

Fantastic Rink! First time visitor, and everyone was extremely friendly and helpful with those that were new to skating. They kept a good balance in the free skate session for skating and games, and mixed up the music so that every age range would have something to enjoy skating to. They have a skate shop in case you are considering making rollerskating more of a part of your life, which was nice to see. I definitely plan on returning to get better at skating! read more

Western Skateland refused to turn off strobe lights so a little girl with photosensitive epilepsy could skate with her Girl Scout troop. This is not acceptable. Western Skateland needs to enact a policy to ensure it is accessible to all. Note - without this incident, my review would be 3-4 stars - it looks and smells like the 80s with the same snack food from the 80s. Nice flashback, reasonably priced. The Saturday lessons are a great way to introduce kids to skating. read more

We booked for 2 hours, 30 people for a teen birthday party. We were so pleased by the attentive staff, clean venue, and overall fun. Exceeded our expectations. The staff was outstanding and I didn't expect all the games and music for the price. A wonderful experience. read more

The only problem i had was a widely versed sign that was hung up abt the use of rest rooms that i believed could cause some serious issue on late nights. New owner is very rude. And charged for people who were on a list for a party. The new owner then Assumed my age and thought I was a child, I'm an adult and polity told the owner I was an adult there for my boyfriends sisters party. She is VERY rude. She then argued with the parents who paid for the party, with one of them, Having cancer and didn't feel well. After arguing she then told us that no one else was allowed in. Owner is VERY Unprofessional. I DO NOT recommend coming here. I also believe that the sign in the bathroom about transgender is needed in a place for children. I have nothing against the LGBQ+, but is not needed in a place for children. read more

The new owner (SARAH) is very very rude, she talks down to her PAYING customers like their trash and like they are below her or something... Some of the things that come out of her mouth I just can't even believe she says. Ok so I'm not one to complain usually. But I just had THEE worst experience at Western Skateland. We got there early before opening to celebrate my boy's birthday. 10 minutes before they opened they lady working came out screaming about each individual needing to be 6ft apart regardless of being family or not. Then she opened up and allowed 5 people through at a time. I get it, social distancing, not mad about that. I go in with me and my 4 kids- that equals 5 right? Ok. So she says I can only have 5 in here, I said yes there's 5 of us, she says mmmhmmmm and rolls her eyes. I point to each of us 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. She rolls her eyes at me again and asks how many are skating, I told her 3 were skating and 1 needed skate rental. She tells me then that she has to charge me for my 1 year old that's sitting in the stroller. I had already handed over my money, and yes I was rolling my eyes at this point. She then THROWS my money back at me and tells me she didn't want to deal with me and I wasn't welcome. I just wanted to support local businesses and have a fun night with my kids and here I am raging instead. Western Skateland has lost one family for good. read more

I want to let all parents know that if you do decide to take your kids skating, beware of the changes. There is a new owner and she changed the rules. The kids now can have cell phones on the floor, wear hats or hoods up and can have ear buds in there ears. This causes problems because those skating dont pay attention to what they are doing. I see many kids getting hurt from these drastic changes. There is no limit to the music played and cursing is allowed as long as you don't cuss at someone. It has become an unsafe place to be. read more

This place denied a simple request by a Girl Scout with epilepsy to turn off the strobe lights for an afternoon. They supposedly provide a fun activity for children but if you serve children and can't make simple requests in order to accommodate all of them, then it's not fun. Do better Western Skateland. For serious, this place is OLD SCHOOL. The decorations really put you in the way back machine and it simply *smells* like a skating rink. I don't get my kids over here Nearly often enough but they have specials nearly every night of the week. Plus the end nearly every session with some electric or cha-cha slide skates off in the center of the ring. I've taken the kiddo's to birthday parties here as well as hosted one here ourselves. Tip: Get that reservation in early because they do NOT play. I think you get like an hour to have your party in the party room and then you have to GTFO. They'll load up your cake, presents and goodies on a cart and wheel them out for you at the start of your party and from then on you best be throwing down your decorations, pouring your punch in cups and singing Happy Birthday because after that you're OUT! That said, the management is super cool and the fee for the birthday party covers several skaters and you literally have to do Nothing but feed the kids cake and send them off to skate. You can stay there the whole session but you don't get to keep the tables. I highly recommend it for birthday parties for the 10 and other crowd or just to get some exercise and jam to some old school tunes. read more

For wearing a tank top and high waisted shorts to this place I was shamed and humiliated in front of my friends, and denied access into a place meant for joy and socializing. To the people who have never been shamed like that it feels like the scene stretches on and you'll be forever looked on in this moment, you feel like your body is wrong, but if you want to wear something and you want to feel hot , sexy, pretty just do it . We have a limited time to live and be free so don't let someone shame you for dressing , talking, or anything in a different way. Call me dramatic but know that it could one day happen to your child, or grandchild, or just someone you care for, so we should all stop it not jump on the asshole wagon.nIt just sucks because I used to be able to come and freely enjoy my self but now it's just a disappointment. read more
