Basketball is a religion in Indiana, and IU stands in the heart of it all. Is there a better way to…read morespend a winter night than watching the IU men's basketball team dominate in their game against Ohio State? I have never attended an IU basketball game until tonight, so this was my first time seeing Assembly Hall. The first thing that I noticed was how complicated the parking situation was. There are over 10 different gates, all split into several smaller "zones". The layout was so difficult that my GPS couldn't even help me find my correct gate. Luckily, the security guards outside were very helpful and guided me in the right direction. I parked right outside the IU team store, so I was able to peruse the pro shop before finding my seat. The staff at the register and throughout the store were friendly and polite. I was tempted to take advantage of the 2 for $40 t-shirts deal! The security outside of the arena was very efficient, I was able to keep my jacket on and just present my keys and cell phone to the security guard. The line was long but we moved through it quickly, giving us plenty of time to sit down before the game started. Inside the basketball court, there are courtside seats on the bottom level, bleachers topped with cushions emblazoned with the IU logo, and comfortable stadium seating in the balconies. For a game over winter break, I was surprised to see almost every seat in the house filled! Luckily, the layout still gave every spectator enough legroom without them feeling squished against the person next to them. The floor in my row and my seat were clean, and I very much appreciated that. Even though I was sitting high up, I was still able to hear the music from the speakers. I stopped by the concession stand during halftime, and once again, a seemingly long line moved quickly, thanks to the efficient employees. I ordered the popcorn in the souvenir bucket, which was enough to feed 2 or 3 people, plus came with a reusable container! It cost $9, which I honestly found pretty reasonable considering it was the size of a large movie theater popcorn and included a souvenir. The popcorn was salty, buttery, and fresh, and I loved every kernel. I opted for a soft drink, but I noticed that Assembly Hall also serves a selection of beers and hard seltzers. If you choose to order an alcoholic beverage, make sure to have your ID on hand! Also, keep in mind alcohol sales stop when there are 10 minutes left in the second half. There are no straws at the concessions stand, but cups do come with a lid with a small opening for spill-resistant sipping. I left right when the game ended, so the parking lot was extremely crowded, but thankfully I was able to exit without any issues. Overall, Assembly Hall is a premier sports venue, and I really enjoyed my experience here! Go Hoosiers!

I haven't been spending too much time in McCordsville lately, but I finished some writing early and…read moredecided to reward myself with a late lunch and a drive through the area. Old School Park is a relatively small park in a growing area of McCordsville. At a mere three acres, Old School Park really packs in the fun with a recently revamped playground and a pretty cool basketball. There's a baseball diamond off to the side, though it's way smaller and either used exclusively for kids or not quite revamped yet. Old School Park has a shelter, a story walk, and there's also a tennis court. They also do have public restrooms. Dogs are allowed. The ground surface on the playground was rather soft. I'm not quite sure what it is, but I liked it. The playground itself is not accessible. The park was packed on this end of May Saturday with the sun out and the temps in the mid-70s. Teens were at the basketball court. Parents with children were at the playground. I might caution that the park is next to a lightly traveled road, and the only barrier happens to be a row of parking spaces. So, darting children could have an issue between parked cars and traffic. The road is definitely lightly traveled, though there are several new businesses in the area - so, it's for sure growing. This is definitely not a destination park, though it's a wonderful residential park for the McCordsville area.

I love a revamped park. I don't know what Old School Park looked like before it got a refresh, but…read moreit's lookin' good now! And it was super busy when I visited, which is always nice to see. Old School Park has two new playgrounds: one for toddlers and another big-kid playground for ages up to 12 years old. The big-kid playground has a giant tunnel slide, a spherical climbing structure, swings and a merry-go-round. Both playgrounds have rubber playground surfacing. There is also a new picnic shelter, a restroom facility (which was not open when I visited, but is supposed to open soon) and two revamped basketball courts. This is a tiny neighborhood park, and not a park I would go out of my way to visit. (Unless you're screwy like me and will drive your children 30 minutes to visit a tiny playground because it's new and you've never experienced it before.) But this is a nice little place to play for the people who live in McCordsville.

I'm not sure where they find the referees, but I'd say 8 out of 10 have absolutely no idea what…read morethey are doing. And the fact that the PAC allows them to continue reffing is beyond me. Kids are constantly being hurt and refs are not making the calls because they are underpaid and overworked, so they want to get home. Or the refs say "they are only in 1st grade...etc" how will children ever learn if you allow them to continuously foul, travel, double dribble etc? Or you just have refs that referee like this is street ball. They have some amazing coaches. But be very careful when you are paying your thousands of dollars for your child or children to play. They advertise all coaches have played or coached at the high school, college or pro level. But that in fact is false. You can end up with a coach who has no experience listed anywhere online, no high-school stats, but went to college and got a degree in sports media. A coach whose teams are beat by 60+ points and no in game adjustments are ever made. And I know everyone has to start somewhere but I'd recommend a coach with no experience start off in a bite size league for 3 & 4 year olds. Coach Mike and Coach Ajay though 10/10. Pros. You can look them up and see all of their achievements. Absolutely amazing coaches and know what they are doing.
