Whether you fall into the resident or visitor category on your trip to Leeds, this visitor centre…read moreis an excellent resource to rely on. The amount of information on offer is staggering, any location or venue of cultural significance is available to take away in leaflet form. I frequently take a detour through the shop so that I can pick up a few current programmes for theatres and art-house cinemas within the area. The entire Yorkshire region is catered for, so any trip can be thoroughly organised with their guidance. The shop also has a range of Yorkshire and Harrogate teas, Grandma Wild's biscuits and other such twee goodies. I am referring to their presence because I have hastily purchased these items on a couple of occasions, ran around to neighbouring Paperchase and successfully presented a relative with a gift, as though it had been wrapped for weeks. This is not advisable, but sometimes unavoidable! Another excellent reason to remember the services of Leeds Visitor Centre is, they are an official vendor of local Ticketmaster events. I am often more popular with some friends and relatives around the end of March, when it is possible to purchase a Leeds Festival weekend ticket without the queues, panic or extortionate booking fees. Their presence in centrally located Leeds train station makes the shop incredibly convenient. With such helpful staff, they are worth investigating if you have lived in Leeds for years, or you are merely visiting for a few days.

There's a stigma attached to visitor centres, tourist information places and for want of a better example, guidebooks, isn't there? "No way man, I don't need a guidebook, I'm a free spirit, let me wander freely," maybe? Well, even if you're a resident of Leeds, the visitor centre can be a handy little place. Tickets, from theatre to Leeds Festival, are available here - free for the most part, of the extortionate booking fees you find at the established online ticket giants. As well, they cover all bases from places to stay, what's on, help with shopping, eating out tips, nightlife recommendations and information on the local sporting clubs. Go have a gander if you're a visitor or not, find out what's going on underneath the surface of our great city!

After several issues with Amber Cars over the years, I have to say that they are totally useless…read moreand unreliable. I have been left waiting for over half an hour for a taxi to pick me up after work as their driver decided to pick up a group of girls that ordered a taxi 15 minutes after we did. A member of my family ordered a taxi a day in advance to get to a hospital appointment, but said taxi never showed up. When we rang them, we were told that it wouldn't be coming as it was during prayer time. If they had let us know that they wouldn't be available at that time, we could have made different arrangement, but ended up panicking to get there on time. We've also ordered a taxi to take an I'll pet to the vets, only for the car to turn up and refuse to transport animals despite us specifically mentioning that we needed a driver that would take pets! Also, in 2022 when cash usage has dropped in favour of cashless payments because of covid, refusing card payments seems a little backwards.

It's been a long while since I called on Amber's services, but today I'm delighted I did! Since…read moremoving house last year I've been using Ace a ton, since their rank is literally five minutes away from me, and they seem to turn up lightening fast. And after the incident (detailed in my last review) I didn't feel inclined to use Amber again for a while. And then you need a taxi, fast, and it doesn't matter who you go with. So long as you get one! The morning rush meant that even calling an hour early for my taxi was risky. Riskier than usual. Two failed attempts from other companies and I tried Amber, imagining that it'd be a similar story. Not the case! For a start, they've obviously got my number on record, since the chap in the office knew where I was and my name. He then tracked the nearest car, told me his location, and gave a very reasonable estimate as to how long it'd take to arrive. Sure enough, five minutes later, along came my car. The driver was super friendly, and had no worries at all on getting me to the station in time, and provided much chat on the way. All in all, Amber's back in my good books. The chap in the office was a delight, really helpful, and honest about the time it would take - none of that "It'll be ten minutes" when they mean 25. Lovely stuff!

I used First on multiple occasions on a recent trip to Leeds with them basically having a monopoly…read moreof bus services in the West Yorkshire city, running both regular services and the Park and Ride. I found the buses to be pretty generic for First standards, no different to what one would find in other cities such as Greater Manchester and Potteries regions, the only exception being London where the set-up and look of buses is different due to Transport for London (TfL) regulations. I had mixed experiences with the staff, some seeming friendly and helpful, others seeming like they couldn't care either way - it was pretty much a half and half split, again this is commonly based on bus journeys with other operators and even First around the country, not just in the Yorkshire and Humber region. The Park and Ride service seemed to be highly overpraised, it even has it's own bus stops around the city, these buses are much more expensive and you can't travel with these with a regular bus ticket including concessionary pass, it also seems to be a set fare along the route meaning just to go one stop (I was arriving in the city for the first time in 18 months, not knowing where my hotel was) I'd have to pay £2 which included a return journey I had no intention of making. Buses ran either on-time with a delay of no more than two or three minutes, however, on a Sunday the buses were really really awkward and infrequent, with multiple services not turning up for 45 minutes in-between buses, and sometimes longer even in the late afternoon, the same also applies for a Bank Holiday. I understand it's Sunday hours, but the most I've seen as a gap in-between buses is 20-30 minutes (and even then there were other buses serving 90% of that route in that time), in other areas so for a city centre of such a large city with a population of around 474,632, that really isn't acceptable. Issues with certain drivers, the comfort of certain buses and other issues mentioned including how infrequent the buses actually run, it is barely satisfactory Monday to Saturday too, I feel First are taking their position basically running a monopoly of buses in the area (Through my weekend in Leeds I only saw one bus route which wasn't operated by First or their Park and Ride route) for granted, letting service suffer, and prices rise and that isn't on. 1*

In addition to Leeds, First provides the bus system transportation for York. During my two days…read morethere, I had the opportunity to ride a couple of the buses in York. Every one of them was clean and smooth and quiet. What I found particularly useful was that my bus was staffed by a "bus host" - when boarding, you would take your seat and he came to you to sell the ticket, make change and answer any questions. I am guessing that this helps with times at stops, since the bus doesn't wait on a long queue of folks. Many of the stops had cover from the rain, reasonably accurate "next bus" information and maps of the system and the individual routes. £3.70 for the day, a good deal.

Extremely Poor Service and Inflexible Policies…read more We booked an airport transfer with Airline Connections to take us to the airport for a 15:05 flight. Since the airport is over an hour away and we were travelling with a 7-month-old baby, we planned carefully. You only need to be at the airport 2 hours before departure, so we requested a pickup around 11:45 to avoid unnecessary waiting around with a baby and a 4-hour flight ahead. When we originally booked, they said pickup would be at 11:05 -- earlier than needed, but we agreed to be flexible and just kill some time at the airport. However, we were contacted today and told pickup was now going to be at 10:30 -- far too early for a young family and simply unnecessary. We phoned a local taxi company who had no issue with the time we originally requested -- and they quoted us £180 return, compared to £285 for the transfer with Airline Connections! To top it all off, when we refused the new pickup time and tried to cancel, they insisted on charging us a £10 cancellation fee -- even though we booked over the phone and were never made aware of any terms and conditions. Completely inflexible, overpriced, and not family-friendly. Will never use again.

A dangerous and dirty service…read more I was picked up from Manchester Airport in July 2024 - the driver drove like a maniac, at times almost bumper to bumper with the cars in front, at 70mph in the rain, in the fast lane of the M62. He was driving so jerkily that I had to hold on to my bag beside me to stop if flying off the seat. The drover's mannerisms were weird - he looked like he had slept rough, he was bouncing to loud music (that he refused to turn down), and he continually picked his nose and teeth, wiping his hand on his lapel. I was afraid that he might abandon me on the hard shoulder of the M62 if I complained. He also pulled in at a service station to buy coffee without mentioning anything, extending the length of my journey. The car was filthy and dusty, and smelled stale. It rattled from a dozen places. And this was Airline Connection's "executive service"!!! I was given an invalid email to report my complaint. After I wrote to the general email I was told to wait for 28 days for a "investigation" to take place. Needless to say, they never responded to me. So I followed up after about 38 days - they sent an email with some platitudes, that never mentioned the life-threatening safety issues. In my experience, standards are low at this company. My family had used its services for many years, and it used to be OK. And standards are not just low but dangerous. Do yourself a favour and look elsewhere.
