Leeds Railway Station is a very large train station, with 18 platforms it is the largest train station by the total number of platforms in the country, outside of London. The station has been refurbished of late, so the entrance and the main concourse are much nicer now, it feels a lot like Kings Cross - St Pancras Square in London. While other parts of the station are not as easy on the eye, and there are many lifts/steps to each platform rather than just one level, they have spent a lot of time and money on improving the station, which I appreciate. The station is served by a large number of train operators, with six through platforms, this includes LNER services to London and Aberdeen, TPExpress Services to the North East and Manchester, Northern services around Yorkshire, and some of these might overlap slightly. For example, most of these routes also go via York. The facilities inside the station are good, there is a Starbucks with seating, and a kiosk on the Bridge, some fast food places such as KFC, a Sainsbury's store. Due to the size of the station, as well as many entrances/exits, the layout can be pretty complicated and you can easily get lost, especially if you're visiting the station for the first time. The staff here seem pretty friendly, obviously, the location of the station is good, a couple minutes' walk away from the city centre, and right next to the river and Hilton Leeds City hotel. 4* read more

As I'm sure many know, Leeds is a fairly big station as they go, so for that it's rather useful. Often journeys can be direct, for which I'm always grateful, but that's more the convenience of location than anything. There are plenty of amenities, including several no-frills sub-par coffee stops, newsies, Boots, M&S, along with the other usual suspects, but you will be paying the extra few pence for your items as with most travel stations. I think what's bugged me of late is the state of the loos. Don't want to pay 30p for a penny, so I utilise the free ones beyond the border, but they're often in disarray. Other than that, I've found the staff helpful when I've a question, and the train information is very easy to find - unlike some of the labyrinths I've been to. Regardless of toilets or function, the building itself, though modern, has a certain pleasing aesthetic - particularly great to take in whilst descending the escalator or standing atop the bridge. Should you find yourself a few moments to spare before alighting your journey, take in the rush of people. We're all going places, but it's a good place to pause, and take it all in. And when you do stop to watch and wonder, I hope you find adventure on the voyage ahead. read more

Leeds station is currently undegoing a bit of a make over and there's a large section by the main entrance that's screened off while they get things finished. In the meantime all the platforms are still open as well as the ticket offices and information desk and almost all of the stores and cafes are still going strong. In terms of those stores and cafes they have what you might expect in most large stations; think Millie's Cookies, Upper Crust, M&S, Boots, Body Shop, WHSmiths and so on. Most platforms have at least one indoor seating area and some have cafes and vending machines too. This is a good thing, as it can certainly get a bit chilly on the platforms from time to time. It's quite a big station, with 17 platforms, many of them divided into sections. So if you're getting a smaller train, it's not likely to stop at all of platform 9 - it'll just be at platform 9B, for example. This is really handy because it means you know exactly where to wait and you don't end up legging it down the platform when you realise that only the front two carriages are actually going to go anywhere. The down side is that you can end up getting off the train very far away from the station exit when you arrive in Leeds. read more

One is gloomy and horrible but the other has a nice Art Deco feel and is home to a Sainsburys and a Wetherspoon amongst others. Strangely, there's a Starbucks kiosk on the bridge between the platforms. Free toilets on the platforms which are relatively clean. The station operates an electronic barrier so you can only access platforms after buying a ticket. read more

The lady in my life doesn't live in Leeds - and, for my sins, I don't drive - so I'm constantly coming here, to Leeds' train station. Yelp doesn't just review restaurants as by now, you should know, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise when you see this; a review of the train station, should it? But where to begin on this, a review of a sprawling mass of choo choo, platforms, shops, eateries and fat controllers. Sorry, lads, but you didn't exactly look trim... The station underwent a bit of a facelift-cum-extension a couple of years ago - and is a lot better for it. More recently; they removed the men who sat and checked your tickets as you went by with gates for you to shove your ticket in. Is it just me that's wary of these machines? Especially as when I'm stopping in Leeds to wait for a connection elsewhere, I go to WHSmith (other newsagents are available) and then the gates refuse me a return to the platforms. Anyway, other than those pesky gates. The station has everything to satisfy a thirst, stomach and brain. The latter only to an extent and is dependant on IQ. read more

How do you rate a train station? Well, for me, I like it to be easy to navigate with train times posted and a place to get a decent coffee or maybe something to eat while waiting to ride down the rails. This one had it all but really nothing to brag about. We bought our tickets back to Manchester from a lady who looked at me suspiciously when I asked about tickets. She had the look that said, "why is he talking to me." Well I was talking to her because I needed a train ticket and she was in the business of selling them. After she cut through my "Yank" accent, the smile returned to her face. I thought it was unbelievable - 20 pounds (25 to the airport) for a ticket to Manchester, which really isn't very far at all. Yeah, they tell me train tickets in the UK are expensive. Now I know that first hand! There were a few coffee shops around, including a Costa and also a Starbucks. I opted for the Starbucks. You even had a choice of places to grab some food. Also, there were train times posted, so no worries. read more

whilst it seems strange to declare, as 4 stars does, 'yay, I'm a fan' when talking about a railway station I shall operate within the boundaries available. There was a time when railway stations were just a place to catch a train but either the rules or my eyes are getting blurred. Most railway stations seem to double as mini shopping plazas now and Leeds is doing it with style. To start with, the concourse and ticket areas are far cleaner than they used to be (and far cleaner than the average city street). Modernisation has been done sensitively and has preserved much that is good and wonderful about the station. There is a good selection of shops and eateries so there is no problem grabbing a bite or a coffee and last minute gifts for a forgotten aunt, spouse, lover or boss can be picked up 9as long as they aren't too fussy) read more

As far as stations go, I've been to far worse than Leeds. We're lucky to have a station that caters to most of the big cities in the UK and it has most of your staple station shops such as Upper Crust, McDonalds, Subway, Boots and Burger King. There's something terribly standoffish and sad about the place though. Like every Christmas they fling up this mahoosive tree and half-assedly fling some fairy lights at it, and the sheer lack of effort makes me feel depressed more than anything. The staff are a bit abrupt (one woman was very mean when she saw me clearly struggling to make it through a swell of people and missed my train by a second. She would have charged me full fare to London only her colleague overheard her and told her not to because it wasn't my fault - miserable bint!!) Wide open spaces, lots of places eat or drink. Yes it looks like a 60's relic from the outside but it does it's job. Everything from coffee and pasties to boost the weary traveler. Functional typical British train station, staff tend to be helpful however if you miss the train guard which happens regularly when travelling from Cross Gates with it only being one stop, buying a ticket platform side is a complete pain with large queues forming regularly and only limited number ofstaff being able to sell tickets its a nightmare. If you are travelling with a disabled person or using a pram allow plenty of time to move about the station as the lifts must be operated by the use of decrepid mice in tiny wheels and are only slightly quicker than just waiting for your child to learn how to walk. The usual Starbucks, WH smiths, millets cookies, burger king ect are all present and correct. read more

As far as railway stations go, Leeds main city center Station is alright! Before I got my brum brum I literally lived at the train station and it's always done fine by me! I won't budge past 3 stars however as since they renovated the station and added ticket automated barriers it has become even more hectic than usual! Literally every other time I have popped my ticket into the gates it hasn't worked adding much embarrassment especially if I have a large bag or suitcase! Despite having difficulties the staff are efficient and friendly and let me through as soon as they can! Once you are through the gates on either side though the service is good. On the train side all terminals are sign posted well and any delays or early arrivals are shown clearly! On the entrance side there is a collection of shops quite large for a smaller city station! Food chains include Subway, Burger King and Mcdonals plus a Starbucks, Weatherspoons plus many newsagents! The station is quite chaotic, but what city train station is isn't! read more

Leeds City Station has had a pretty hefty facelift over the past few years (£245 million pounds - that's more than a bit of botox), and it's now looking pretty fancy. The new bus interchange and taxi rank works much better, and the platforms are all well maintained and easy to get to. The only area I wish some train/station developer person would have a look at is the tired-looking main concourse. The plasma screens hanging from the ceiling look nice and everything, but the whole entrance still looks old compared with the rest of the station, and not old in a nice way. Get rid of those kiosk bits and get more seats in, that's what I say. The short-term car park's a life saver for those of us who don't want to get beeped at waiting on that tiny mini roundaout out back - 50p for half an hour seems reasonable enough, and there's always a space when I've needed one, but the long-term car park's too expensive for me so I'd rather park at Burley Park for free and then catch a train into Leeds to then go onto my destination than fork out a tenner or more, thanks. Has the usual Starbucks, Maccies, BK and Wetherspoons, plus an M&S Simply Food and a Boots. Plenty of cashpoints too. read more

I've been through the station a number of times now and (touch wood) have yet to have any problems. I wish there was at least one decent place for food in the station (the M&S and Subway just don't make the grade in my book), but I suppose that's pretty representative of the state of most UK train stations. Of course, it's easy enough to walk to a variety of venues from this centrally located station. If you're shooting back and forth between here and King's Cross in London, you'll be pleased to note a steady stream of trains for this slightly more than 2 hour route. read more

With the new ticket barriers about to be opened this is fast becoming a hi-tech rail station. I'm not really sure why you need to show a ticket as you leave a train - that doesn't happen in most stations I know. The staff are pretty helpful and seem to have the platforms of most trains built into their thinking. There's a decent selection of food outlets, a Wetherspoons if you need a drink before your journey and even a Marks and Spencers for snacks to eat on the train. For those who remember the days when you drove in the front entrance the station is much easier to find now too. Gone are the days when the local council thought it fun to make driving into the station a sort of mystery game that involved finding a route that actually worked. Nowadays the drop-off area off the rear concourse is a doddle. read more

The Leeds City station is huge ('that's what she said'). But it's not a problem, due to the fact that it is very easy to get around. In front of the railway station you will find bus stops (there is a bud to the airport from here), and taxis. When you go inside the are a few shops were you can buy food, newspapers and magazines and other stuff you might need if you are traveling. Recently ticket barriers have been introduced, what is a great improvement - it makes traveling faster and more secure. The railway station is a bit boring in on the inside, something should be done about that. read more

The staff in Leeds station (on the platforms) are really miserable and unhelpful. Someone give them some happy pills. If you have a complaint or question then they will give you SH8T. As far as the ticket barriers go they are really annoying. Manchester Picadilly's ticket barriers aren't even that strict! I'm taking the bus into Leeds next time! read more

I've used Leeds on several occasions over the years and the best I can say about it is that on a good day it might just about make 'average'. On the plus side, there are plenty of shops etc, some even in the middle of the platforms. It's large and relatively compact, so it's quite easy to get to whichever platform you need. But on the down side, the signage is poor. I spent ages trying to locate the right platform for a train to Wakefield a few weeks ago (having got off a train from Manchester), and the information simply wasn't displayed. It might be better if you come in through the main ticket hall, but for people who are looking to change trains at Leeds it can definitely be frustrating. At the end of the day, it's no use having loads of shops if you can't get the basics right. Call me old-fashioned but generally go to Leeds Station to change trains, not to buy a tie. read more

Sigh I see too much of this place. It's crowded, loud and busy, and I hate it. I'm not a fan of the trains - they're often delayed, packed to the rafters or just plain cancelled. The shops in the train station are what you'd expect - WH Smiths, Boots, McDonalds etc - which is enough to equip you for your journey wherever you may be going. Recently the actual station has got new LCD screens which have made it clearer to read the train times and at least now none of the main screens seem to randomly break down. I can't give this place any more than 3 stars really. It's a train station. It does it's job but it's not a place I like visiting! read more

One of my favourite stations in the country, the station is very big, 17 platforms, ticket barriers, plenty of places to buy food, drink & souvenirs, there is also a Wetherspoons situated inside the railway station. There is a small bus station outside the station, one of the main shopping centre's as well as pubs, restaurants, shops are all situated within a few minutes walk from the station. read more

One of the worse designed stations in the country. On busy days, which is practically any time or day, get the experience of a packed football stadium, with crowds going to a match in different directions through each other. Even KingsCross in London, has seperated the flow of people on and off trains. At Leeds all exits, other than the one cattle run, have been deliberately blocked up. This would be somehow tolerable if the staff working there were in any way human. The people in the East coast office are epically unhelpful. Any advise or help in retreiving booked tickets, for example, is met with hostility and assumptions off trying to pull a fast one. read more

Station is poorly run by Northern Rail. Gating machines frequently malfunction, creating bottlenecks, and there are often insufficient gating assistants (especially in the evenings) to help people. The quality of customer service is uneven -- a few staff are ok, but a lot of them are rude, particularly if you're female. The station is a pain to navigate, and station staff often announce platform changes very late. I've also recently experienced trains coming into platforms other than the one announced, leading to an almighty scramble. The station is badly lit, often dirty (doesn't actually smell of pee, but looks like it might), and generally looks shoddy and run down. It provides a really poor introduction to Leeds, which is a shame, because the city itself is great. Poor station design also means that people get through the badly designed gates, then stop straightaway to look at the display boards (which are also in the wrong place). As a result, there is a lot of milling about and congestion on the concourse near the gates. You'd have thought that whoever was responsible for station design would have involved someone who knew about people flow in the design process, but evidently not .The station seems to have been designed by a bored Year Seven on work experience, who thought it would be a bit of a giggle to design it so that it maximised bottlenecks and opportunities for amusing accidents. The only good thing about it is that the staff in Boots and M&S are generally pretty good. read more

Considering the large swathes of my life I spend on trains, or perhaps because of this, I absolutely, passionately hate train stations. They have an amazing ability to turn the most passive of human beings into scowling, soulless monsters, ready to throw small children and grandmothers aside in their endless pursuit of a table seat that doesn't face backwards. Leeds train station, sadly, is one of the worst culprits, with an endless confusion of escalators, gates and 'b' and 'c' platforms that start half a mile away all adding to the general atmosphere of a chaotic purgatory full of angry passengers, screaming children and apathetic guards. The staff are the worse part - although a few of them have helped me in the past, I can count on one hand the amount of pleasant encounters I've had over what must be over a hundred visits, and the majority of the time the staff seem to genuinely resent your presence. Unfortunately, this being the train station, I can't even advise you to take your custom elsewhere. Just be prepared for the worse, and perhaps bring along some sarcastic rhetoric to brighten up your day. read more

I haven't been here for almost 20 years although I was only passing through it hasn't changed much. Yes it's cold, yes it could do with a few more toilets for a station of this size but there's plenty of little warm cafes on the platforms, it's clean, there's always someone available to help you find your way and it's one of those stations that's fit for purpose without the unnecessary flashiness. read more

Huge, huge station, completely disorienting to get out of, with a huge market close by. They also hgave a very, very strict ticket barrier where your precious tickets can just disappear if you decide to leave the concourse while you wait an hour for your train to arrive, so be careful. There are lots and lots of bars and little restaurants to eat in, or you can wander a bit to teh right and up the hill and find yourself in the shopping centre of leeds, which is really rather nice. Leeds station is huge, much bigger in width compared to Kings Cross in London. There are over 12 lines with stations a,b,c for each it is easy to get lost. There are many screens and information boards and staff to help out if you are lost. I was impressed by the size of this station. read more

Leeds station really irritates me. The new barriers don't work well and still create queues (although nothing like as bad as the queuse that used to form before to get out of the station). WHSmith ditched its 'honesty box' paypoint for newspapers some time ago which means that you have to queue to buy a paper, that's after queueing to buy a ticket from someone who doesn't listen to what you are asking for. read more

Ok, it is a large and well run station, with good links and travel to the rest of the country. However their is sparce facilities for toilets and cafes, on the platforms The ticket barriers bottleneck commuters during rush hour and getting through them a pain, facilities on the other side of the barriers are good, with a wide range of food outlets, and stores. however if your connecting you cant get to them because of the automated Barriers. Awh I think Leeds Railway often gets a bad rep, mainly due to the fact if you're having to wait for a train it's absolutely freezing on the platform, no matter how many layers you've managed to pull on it's freezing, it's warmer outside, honest I swear. But before you hit the dreaded barriers it's not half bad. For it's sins, McDonald's is open until the wee hours of the morning, that's if it's not open 24 hours, I don't recall ever seeing it shut, there are two pub-cum-restaurants attached to either end of the railway station, there's a Mark's and Spencer's food store, WH Smith, a Paperchase, Burger King, plenty of sandwich shops, a Boots, the two decent Starbucks in Leeds, there are more than one customer service points, and whilst sometimes the guides aren't the most well informed, they are well intended. The toilets, eugh had to use them once, have an aversion to anything public of this nature, but I didn't run screaming wishing to cleanse myself in bleach, so it wasn't too bad. Like I said it gets a bad rep, and I think it's been made worse with the frankly stupid barriers. The electronic ticket things are ridiculous and are more temperamental than a...can't think of a politically correct comparison. read more

Leeds station is the main train hub in West Yorkshire and one of the main stations in the north of England and fortunately it's a good, modern station with plenty of facilities. The station has a Wetherspoons pub, Burger King, McDonalds, Subway, Boots, Marks and Spencers food, WHSmiths and several smaller shops. In addition there is a nice hotel within the station which is handy for any travellers arriving late or leaving early. Leeds station is huge (not surprising with all the facilities) and has a dozens of trains arriving and leaving everyday to places all around the UK as well as many local trains around Yorkshire. New ticket barriers have just been installed to reduce the number of people trying to get a free train journey which can mean there are queues to get to and off the platforms. Leeds station is an excellent transport facility with a number of things to do if you are early for your train or your train is delayed. read more

Not reviewing actual train station here,just the staff.Left the station only yesterday to travel to Carlisle.I have never commented on any train station in my life.My family and I were so impressed with all the staff we encountered yesterday.Nothing was too much trouble.From cleaners holding the lift door open for us,to staff offereing to carry our bags so we could get our elderly mother on board.So thankyou very much for making what could have been quite a difficult travelling experience for us to a "still have faith in humanity one". read more
