Until that lottery win comes in though I'll have to settle for a fleet of Vespas. Whilst they are getting their service, it's back to the board and public transport ago. Leeds is pretty well covered on the main buse routes and West Yorkshire Metro are the main suppliers. Now we all grumble about the service and standard in this country but I have to say Metro aren't half bad. What I will rave about is the free city centre buses, excellent. Metro's freecitybus links Leeds' rail and bus stations, business and shopping districts, the General Infirmary, Universities and Park Lane College. Not half bad Jack, especially as they run every few minutes from 6.30am till 7.30pm. You'll also find plenty of buses taking you to the outskirts of the city. Particularly handy if you want to venture to the football at Elland Road or the rugby and cricket at Headingley. They aren't perfect, but hell what is these days. However, after a day hitting the shops or getting home from work you really can't slam the service they provide.

After several issues with Amber Cars over the years, I have to say that they are totally useless…read moreand unreliable. I have been left waiting for over half an hour for a taxi to pick me up after work as their driver decided to pick up a group of girls that ordered a taxi 15 minutes after we did. A member of my family ordered a taxi a day in advance to get to a hospital appointment, but said taxi never showed up. When we rang them, we were told that it wouldn't be coming as it was during prayer time. If they had let us know that they wouldn't be available at that time, we could have made different arrangement, but ended up panicking to get there on time. We've also ordered a taxi to take an I'll pet to the vets, only for the car to turn up and refuse to transport animals despite us specifically mentioning that we needed a driver that would take pets! Also, in 2022 when cash usage has dropped in favour of cashless payments because of covid, refusing card payments seems a little backwards.

And after the incident (detailed in my last review) I didn't feel inclined to use Amber again for a while. And then you need a taxi, fast, and it doesn't matter who you go with. So long as you get one! The morning rush meant that even calling an hour early for my taxi was risky. Riskier than usual. Two failed attempts from other companies and I tried Amber, imagining that it'd be a similar story. Not the case! For a start, they've obviously got my number on record, since the chap in the office knew where I was and my name. He then tracked the nearest car, told me his location, and gave a very reasonable estimate as to how long it'd take to arrive. Sure enough, five minutes later, along came my car. The driver was super friendly, and had no worries at all on getting me to the station in time, and provided much chat on the way. All in all, Amber's back in my good books. The chap in the office was a delight, really helpful, and honest about the time it would take - none of that "It'll be ten minutes" when they mean 25. Lovely stuff!

Irk. I hate to downgrade, but the other day was a let down, big time. It wasn't so much that I…read morewould downgrade beyond being a fan, as let's face it, I am a fan - they are my rock in the taxi world. It just upsets me when a new/inexperienced driver comes along, has no idea what so ever where we're going, fails to use sat nav and finally only knocks a mere quid off the fee for my lengthy journey. A bugbear of mine is taxi drivers not knowing where we're going. After all, that's what you expect of them. I know new drivers can't be an expert instantly but it helps if you know the area a little bit. As soon as I got in I told him that I couldn't direct him, as I'd never been to my destination before. I did know, however, that Armley was not in the direction of Meanwood. A sinking feeling arose in my stomach - does he even know the vague areas of Leeds?! Hrmph. I felt at that point the strongest longing for a smart phone I've ever had - oh to have the internet right then and there! Anyway. Long story short, I was 25 minutes late for my first ever physio appointment and so literally had ten-fifteen minutes with them and had to call another taxi home. Angry? Yes. Deflated? Yes. Will I call Ace for my next appointment? Doubtful. But I will call them for most everything else, since, they are usually very reliable. And, in spite of the odd new driver like this, they practically teleport to my front door when I call them. I do love you Ace, but we've had a bit of a tiff, so I'm giving you the cold shoulder. I'm sure we'll make up soon enough.

I'm sure at busier times, they will of course have slower responses but I can only spread the word on my experience. If you need a taxi, don't call the Ghostbusters as that would be silly. Call Ace Cars.

Gah. It's quite a leap, I know, but I was really annoyed with the service of my last taxi…read more Basically, I've used these guys many a time since the last review, their being the easiest and often cheapest taxi home for me, but on my last journey home this was far from the case. To begin with, it can sometimes be a touch intimidating catching the cab late at night from their rank as the take away next door tends to attract the drunken rowdy lot you'll often bump into on a weekend night, it's not a major problem as I'm not too worried, but it's sometimes a little much. Especially when hoards of 'rude-boys' decide to jump the queue so you go from 3rd to 9th and no one seems to stop that. In any case. Last time I hopped in, we were dropping my friend at the top of the road literally en route to my house (so it was literally just stopping for a second) and then I needed to grab some cash. Again, this was no more than two minutes literally en route to my house. As we pulled up to my door, I realised he'd not stuck the meter on. Yes, it was Friday night, but I jumped in at the rank, not randomly off the street. (And when you grab a cab from the street a price is agreed, not when you go from the rank, as I understand it.) In any case, he plucked £9.00 out of the air. It costs me less than that on a Saturday night to go from Duncan Street in a Black and White cab, let alone just off new Briggate. In fact, it costs less than that from the station. I know as I have the receipts. I told him this and he refuted that, saying that with two stops it would be £9. Again, waiting time for those stops couldn't have been more than two and a half minutes. Maybe three at a push. I argued him down to £8, which still felt like a little much and I'll probably avoid getting their taxis again for a while. The taxi before that also took me a much longer route home, as he'd not listened to where I wanted to be, so all in all it's not good. Being a pretty loyal customer I'm a little miffed.

Now I'm not always the biggest fan of taxis. I'm pretty sure that some of them take advantage of my…read moresomewhat delicate state of well being at times and thus I end up an extra tenner out of pocket. However, no such problems seem to have transpired with A Metro Cars. I'm not sure how much more you can really say about a taxi service. All I want is for the cheapest fares possible, friendly staff and a driver who actually knows the area better than me. It was a winner on all accounts. Maybe my opinion would differ if I used them regularly on a Saturday night, maybe it wouldn't but I can only comment on what I've experienced which was an all round pleasant journey home.

So, last Saturday I opted to nip across the road from the Adelphi and jump in a taxi home with…read morethese guys. (As in Aireline, not some random chaps.) Whilst the wait was a matter of seconds, which is always appreciated, the fare wasn't quite as fair as I'd have hoped. For a start, in spite of the presence of a meter, it turned out that he'd not switched it on from the start of the journey. Now, in my experience, when you hop a private hire from a random spot (which you shouldn't do, obviously) you agree a price before arrival. It's inevitably more, because you haven't booked, and often you're better off, and safer it has to be pointed out, to get a marked city cab. In this instance, since I'd gotten the taxi from the rank, I assumed foolishly we'd be on the meter and above board! Not true. When we arrived at my house he declared a price, which was at least a few quid more than it should have been. I asked if the meter had been on, he said no, and I asked why. No answer, so I asked why so much. Apparently fuel prices and some other crud of an excuse. I had to fetch the excess from my house, and didn't even get a thanks. Very annoyed, and I doubt I'll bother with these guys again. Such a shame, given my previous experience, but this has certainly marred my opinion of them. No excuse for not putting the meter on, especially since I wasn't told from the start.

I've never used Aireline before, but after having run-ins in my own car with not one, but TWO of…read moretheir drivers, I can't say I will be using them. The first incident occured on York Road, near Killingbeck Asda, where there's no right turn onto the carriageway to go back towards Asda. Well, Aireline's finest ignored the no right turn sign, and headed straight towards oncoming traffic, having the audacity to flash his lights at ME and every other car coming his way. Luckily he moved, or my beautiful car would be on the scrap heap. Incident number two happened just the other day, outside the train station drop off area. As I was driving in, another of Aireline's finest decided to pull out right in front of me, without even checking to see if any traffic was coming at him. I beeped and gestured, he ignored it completely. I've always had an issue with taxi drivers who think they own the road, but surely basic safety and maybe, the highway code, come into force here?! If a taxi driver cannot even read a basic road sign, then in my opinion, they shouldn't be on the road. End of. I won't be using Aireline, at all. I'd rather walk home in the dark.
