So disappointing. Great selection and beautiful spot, and local to me. Very expensive but saves me from getting off the island! In the last couple years I've shopped there a few times, mostly for plants for my yard/garden. I have to say, only about 15% of the plants I bought survived. Realizing a few months ago during my last purchase that they had a money back guarantee, I took a couple of the very dead plants back and asked for a refund or replacement. The staff was rude, grilled me on how I planted them, then opted to not give me anything and were very short with me. We confirmed I planted them right, so it was this attitude of "well it must be you, it certainly can't be us." It was really frustrating, and disconcerting as I have spent large sums there. Nestled in West Seattle on California Ave, it seems small until you get up close and realize it is quite substantial in size, with expansive outdoor and indoor structures - including a cafe! I recently sent an email inquiring about a bay leaf plant. The response was truly quick, so I went and made the purchase the same day. The only drawback, trying to find someone to help me locate the plant. I asked the young lady inside and she basically pointed to the back of the vegetable area, so I wandered back to where she pointed. I found the plant, finally, but it took me quite a while. It was on the top shelf and I am not tall. I really like this nursery, it's great, have shopped there many times, and have come out with some great plants/vegetables and I did get more than just the bay leaf plant. A West Seattle friend asked me to go on the garden tour a couple of weeks ago. When I saw Marcia Bruno's garden, she had me at her Harlequin Glory Bower tree. Elusive, hard to find and just plain wonderful! And, then ~ there it was! In a beautiful garden in West Seattle! I made an appointment that next week to meet Marcia and buy my own Harlequin Glory Bower. She was super helpful. Did I buy other things? Why, yes I did. The Harlequin Glory Bower I came for and an amazing variegated, already very tall pink dogwood (be still my heart) and another couple of very cool plants! Thank you, Marcia! West Seattle Nursery is a wonderful nursery located on California Ave, between the Morgan and Alaska Junctions. It is easy to get to, they have a free parking lot, and there is usually plenty of street parking. They have all of your usual nursery stuff: plants, pots, seeds, soil, tools, etc. They also have a greenhouse gift shop with lots of little knick knacks that make great presents. In December, they offer freshly cut Christmas trees (Alpine Noble Fir, Noble Fir, Fraser Fir, Douglas Fir, and Natural Douglas Fir) that are sourced from a family-owned, sustainable tree farm in Washington. A few years ago we bought our first Christmas tree here because it was so convenient. They have trees of all sizes, and we ended up picking a small one that was like five feet tall. You can also order a tree online and have it delivered to your home. However, I think my new favorite part about this nursery is the wreath making! This year we made wreaths for the first time. For 2022, they offered this from November 13 to December 18. You can make a free reservation on their website. Each appointment is for 90 minutes and there is a maximum of four people at a time. You should bring your own pruners and gardening gloves, but they have some tools you can use if you forget. The tables are located outside, but they were under a covering (so you won't get rained on) and they had huge heat lamps nearby. They have everything you need to make a wreath (frames, greens, and accents like berries and pinecones). You just have to pay for the things you decide to use. You can also bring your own items from home to use. There is an employee there to help you if you've never done this before. It is actually quite easy once you make the first bundle. LOL the hardest part is probably coming up with a plan/design for your wreath. We loved making wreaths here and we are already looking forward to next year! read more

The nursery is open but you have to make a shopping reservation appointment to get in. It was really easy to make in their website and you can a confirmation email and text. They have a large selection of outdoor plants and supplies but on my most recent visit, I was shopping in their inside store where the indoor plants and gift wares live. They have a pretty nice array of house plants, like monsteras, and a bunch of succulents, air plants (tillandsia), and cacti. They have some hanging plants too so don't forget to look up! There are also lots of pretty artisanal ceramic pots in various sizes and colors. There were also terrarium supplies (like those glass globes that air plants go into). They also sell cute mugs and scarves and books and other plant-themes things that would make nice gifts. I also noticed a menu of coffee drinks (but i think that wasn't in operation but what a cute idea). I was able to find the perfect plant and pot that's going to be a gift for a friend. When I checked out, the cashier offered to repot the plant for me!! And when i said it was a gift, she put it in a box with tissue paper for me! I am a Japanese maple collector and Julie J from the nursery is my go-to person. She is very knowledgeable and approachable and helpful! She replies to my email inquiries quickly and tells me if certain trees are available. The prices on these trees are reasonable and they do carry a pretty good amount of different cultivars. The nursery does have bonsai section as well. I snagged a couple of pre-bonsai dwarf Wisterias. I just love this place and their friendly staff that I have to write a review and let people know this place needs checking out! read more

Dropped way too much money here and I plan on dropping more. They're not as large as the northerly nurseries but they have all your basic needs and more. Love their indoor and outdoor selections and everyone on staff is amazing and helpful. They genuinely seem to want to be there. I called in one time and had an incredibly helpful lady detailing my fruit tree purchase from pot to ground and next steps. I had issues with one of my maples purchased there (not their fault) and I got not one, but 3 professional opinions on the issue. Love that they'll try to bottom out any problems. Delivery is also free for plants that don't fit in your car if it falls in a particular area code btw so heads up if you're thinking about a fruit tree. They aren't without fault as they're so busy that their parking lot fills up fast so consider parking in the neighborhood around the corner. Their plants have also risen in price, but then what hasn't? For what it's worth, I have multiple clearance items that have thrived just fine. Compared to Home Depot's clearance, you'll get just as good flowers, shrubs, trees, ground covers, and more versus pretty banged up flowers. I asked W Sea Nursery staff why some are there and they took one of them and compared to the others and honestly I couldn't tell the diff. Staff just said some clearance items didn't make the cut. I have been patronizing West Seattle Nursery ever since the original owner, Mark, started selling plants in an empty lot on 35th Avenue SW. The nursery sells a good variety of plants, outdoor pots, seeds, fertilizers, gardening tools, etc. They offer free delivery in West Seattle. I don't know if they still do this but years ago I couldn't find white agapanthas so they ordered it for me. They called me weeks later saying my order was in. I have used their sharpening services, too. I dropped off my shovel on a Wednesday and received it the following Wednesday. The fee for sharpening the shovel was only $7. Today was the first time I used their free houseplant repotting service. I brought in 3 plants. Kerri helped me clean, trim, and repot all 3 plants. I ended up buying a new pot for one of the plants. Kerri was so sweet, friendly and helpful. She gave me tips on growing my plants. She was great! West Seattle Nursery has a small parking lot, maybe enough for 6 cars. There is also street parking. I love having a nursery so close to us. read more

I really love West Seattle Nursery. I stopped in recently to check and see if they had any Norfolk Island Pine trees in stock. They didn't, but they asked me if I'd like to be contacted once they do. So I left my info and let them know I was looking for a 10"+ size. Within a couple of weeks I got a return phone call about a large Norfolk Island Pine in stock and I was so excited to go pick it up. When I arrived, they had the tree set aside and it was gorgeous... AND HUGE! I had to take it home! They also helped me to the car with my new tree which was really nice. Oof. Not great to leave a negative review for a local business but I feel like I want to spare others. It's hit or miss but some of the employees here are truly rude and condescending. Like snobbish while offering bad advice or smiling and talking in a sweet voice while at the same time being super rude. It's weird actually. It's a trek from W Sea, but seriously, Swansons and Sky nurseries up north are faaaar superior in terms of how they treat customers. Worth the drive. Their website says they're open until 7 PM, but Yelp says 6 PM. I tried calling on my bus ride home to check, and it sounded like their phone greeting said 6 PM but the bus was also kind of noisy so I may have misheard. I emailed them and they confirmed they were open until 7 PM and would contact Yelp to get their hours updated. Anyways, the point of this is their hours make it convenient for me to stop by after work. The C stops near here so I don't have to worry about parking and can just walk home after. I like the Plant Store on Delridge, but the parking gives me anxiety because the street parking spaces are back in only. I'm not super knowledgeable about plants, but pricing seemed reasonable to me compared to Young Flowers downtown. I checked out both places for a flowery plant to put into a pot I had been gifted. I ended up going with a 4" Kalanchoe Calendiva for $6.98. The cashier was friendly and gave good advice for care instructions. west seattle has undergone some changes since n the past decade, covid notwithstanding, and they're a definite community hub for those with green thumbs and those aspiring to have them. they've got two buildings sandwiching an area with all kinds of plants from ground cover to seasonal christmas trees, annuals and a slew of perennials. looking for succulents and house plants? head to the north building. want more of the tools of the trade? the south building has all kinds of things like pruning sheers, gardening gloves, bagged souls, etc. both buildings have polite staff waiting to help you and facilitate your purchases. in the past, i've found things here i couldn't find at other nurseries. i love that they had jacob's ladder last summer and are stocked to the brim during the holiday season with all kinds of gift items as well as some amazing ornaments. there are other nurseries in the west seattle/burien vicinity and while people have commented that their prices may be higher than their competitors, i say they are worth stopping by. you may find something here that the other places don't stock. their buyer(s?) has an eye for unique things and their staff always strive to help. don't knock 'em 'til you try 'em! read more

For 12 years, I have bought my Christmas trees from West Seattle Nursery. Each year, I make the long drive all the way from my neighborhood because I previously loved the service and the trees. However, a couple of things happened this year that have changed that. First, the person who assisted me with the tree, who was very nice and great to work with, misquoted the price. He had told me $71, but when I went to get rung up, I was told the tree was actually $91. Ouch. I did mention this to the cashier, but she didn't offer to do anything about it. As it was getting late, I was tired and the guys were already putting the tree on the car, I decided to just let it go. I immediately put the tree in water when I brought it home and started working on it only to discover needles were falling off of it by the handful. Clearly, I was sold an old tree or something was wrong with it. I emailed the nursery twice about the situation, but I didn't receive a response, not even an apology. After 12 years of loyally shopping with them and spreading the word about how much I loved buying my trees from them (and I do a serious tree, so everyone always asks), this was really disappointing. read more

Continuing my spree of reviewing all the wonderful nurseries I have visited in the Seattle area. Here in the northern aspect of Seattle, we have a few places to choose from but as I was scouring the internet for more unique finds, West Seattle Nursery repeatedly came up. It was the middle of winter and I was looking for some Japanese maples at the time to fill the garden and this place repeatedly came up as the prime spot for that. So for me driving over to West Seattle at this point take a LONG time. Almost 35 min without traffic and then with traffic, well, let's just say it reminds me of LA. Anyways, once you make it over there a small tiny parking lot inside the nursery but those with cars that are gas guzzlers and large and in charge, you may want to park on the street. There are several sections to this nursery so you want to make sure you visit them all. As I searched for what I was looking for, WSN did not disappoint. In the back corner of their nursery they had a large collection of Japanese maples. All shapes and sizes. Different clones all with their labels. If you were looking for something in particular, you should be able to find it here. For those looking to convert trees to bonsais, they had a fair number of small trees available as well. For those looking for larger ones, you're in luck! Tons to choose from. Another awesome find was the pine tree collection. Similarly there were tons of all shapes and sizes. Many had variegation which was really cool with many you could take to make bonsai as well. They have many other plants to choose from and although they have a building dedicated to home decor and indoor gardening, I didn't find their collection of indoor plants all that impressive. Some interesting finds but I think the places nearby me a little bit more comprehensive. That being said, their collection of other things was enough to bring me down and to the west of where we live. Staff are friendly, prices are reasonable. Many things to look at and then fun things to do in and around the neighborhood here. Hopefully the bridge will be fixed soon so traffic can flow a little more logically and we won't have to commute a year to get here! read more

The selection of plants is wonderful and I spent lots more than I intended, but am so happy that I did. In the spring I bought 3 lovely big ceramic pots and lots of herbs and flowers for my deck in the treetops. I moved from a home with an enclosed courtyard and almost an acre of lawn and garden in Texas to an apartment in West Seattle. I'm the kind of person who can't exist without something green nearby. This fall I bought pansies and ornamental cabbage and kale plants for my deck. I couldn't resist picking up a bunch of red and bright pink cyclamens for pots inside this winter. This place is great -- and its stunning to me that people could think otherwise. I have been buying plants here for over a decade and have always found them helpful. They have a great selection of other garden supplies (trellises, mulch, etc.). I have had interactions with just about every employee and every time -- I mean every time -- they have gone out of their way to help me. I have certainly had some plants die after I bought them, but that is 100% the fault of the planter not the nursery. Thank you for everything you guys do for West Seattle and beyond. Every time I am driving around and see someone's particularly attractive flowers and plantings I always assume it is thanks to the West Seattle Nursery and their great people. This place is hot or miss. Mostly miss. I have had plants reported here during the February event which was nice. I just threw out my second plant I bought from here that I am not going with being diseases and not my issue. One of the plants was expensive and parts of it rotted which I was initially told I did but after a second plant dying virtually the same way and ALL my other plants thriving. I am chalking up to the original starter plant. It's very disappointing. Also some of the employees there no nothing about plants. So that is frustrating as well. I went to Swanson's today. Lovely little nursery! Their selection is huge and they always have a ton of interesting and unique tropical plant species. All the gardening supplies you could possibly need are here. The plants I have gotten from them have thrived fairly well. During Christmas time they have trees of all sizes, including small ones for apartment living. I do agree that some of the staff members are a bit standoff-ish, but others are really friendly and helpful, and having frequented here quite a bit I kind of know who to go to for help. read more
