Overall I wasn't at all satisfied with my food and I'd say this meal in particular wasn't worth the $51.00 whatsoever. I want to say I stand firmly on supporting black businesses, but I won't lie about my experience. The menu consists of Ethiopian favorites like Doro Wat, Tibs, Kitfo and a variety of vegan and gluten-free dishes. I am a big lentil fan and love that lentils are a big part of Ethiopian cuisine. I had the Lalibela Deluxe platter in front of me most of the evening and enjoyed the flavors and spices of each of the items. Ethiopian food is so vibrant and colorful. If you have never tried, they do not use silverware to pick up their food. Food is eaten with Injera - a spongy pancake-like flatbread that you use to scoop up your food. After living in Benin for two years, we were bummed that the nearest Beninese restaurant was in Tucson and found this place to fill a foodie hole in our hearts/stomachs. It did not disappoint! When we first walked in around 5pm on a weekday, it was pretty empty. Over the course of the evening though, we saw many people coming in for large pick up orders. Unassuming interior with an array of simple seating arrangements and afro-pop/music videos playing in the background. You can see the whole kitchen from dining area and can tell it's a family operation! The menu can be a little confusing as they have change their specials every day. If you're looking for something in particular and don't see it on the menu for that day, I would definitely call in to check. We went on a Thursday (special was potato greens), but they also happened to have cassava leaves available (usually Wednesday's special). The staff were also very kind in answering questions. There were a few items we never had before, and they offered us generous samples of what felt like the whole menu! I ended up getting the 1) fried fish with attieke and alloco (plantain) which I believe is an everyday special and 2) the potato greens stewed with meat and served with rice. It was about $20 each dish which was a little pricier than I anticipated until the portions came out: they were huge. I got a mountain of rice on a platter to go with my potato greens. No wonder people kept coming by to pick up for their family dinners! Ya'll, when I tasted this food, I almost shed a tear. The stewed potato greens were phenomenal. Well spiced with tons of flavor packed in, accompanied perfectly with rice or fufu. The meat stewed with the greens was also very tender and flavorful as well. Honestly, I don't remember if it was beef or pork but I found myself savoring every little morsel with rice. Mmmmm. As for the fried fish and attieke dish: attieke is like a slightly tangy grain made from cassava flour and water. The attieke flavor and texture was spot on, and their pepper sauce was like coming home. I will say that both their alloco and fish were a little dry for me (I like both practically deep fried), but I smothered it in their amazing pepper sauce and devoured it anyways. We also got some of their homemade bottled bissap and ginger beer that was great. *Note: they only have bottled water for sale, so if you go ham on the pepper sauce like we did, prepare yourself. The TV was on loud with a soccer game on. A man came out and sat us. we the meat sambusas. They were very good. The gentleman that served us was very nice. They sell water, you cannot get a glass.. only bottles. The prices of the food seemed reasonable. I got the Awaze Tibs(seasoned beef dish). this was very good. It came with the authentic Injera. (gluten free fermented bread) it has a spongy texture, a very sour dough like flavor. My daughter got the Alicia Wot (seasoned lamb dish). It was also very good. My problem lies with the service mostly. All the men that worked there, sat in the room with the TV, area watching the soccer game including our server. We sat there forever to get the door and then I had to go wake him for our bill. He didn't offer an itemized bill, just gave me the amount. I had to ask for an itemized bill. I'm not a fan of a restaurant that doesn't want to do their job. I will return and try more of the food, but i'm gonna have to figure out how to deal with the service.
