But I've never really warmed to the place. It's such a magnificent heritage building. Absolutely stunning. Full of promise. Inside just lacks character for me. Hard to pinpoint exactly what. Friday nights seem to be the young crowd. Sometimes the taxis are queued up as it's so busy. There are events there, like the recent cider festival. There are rooms to book for functions. You can get a decent meal there and the wine list is good. So, by all means, join the many who enjoy it here. There's nothing wrong with it. And if you can work out why it just doesn't feel right to me, let me know!

The service has never been 5 star and sometimes it takes a while to be served. Staff always seem friendly though and I try to relax into the beach vibe instead of worrying that things aren't perfect. I like the atmosphere and it varies delaying on day and time of day. Sunday evenings is always busy and there is live music, plus an enthusiastic dancing crowd. Quite an older crowd the later it gets on Sundays. I have had a few meetings here in the day and it's a great spot to chill out and pretend to work ;-) I agree with Chloe about the food being a bit overly deep fried. I have had some tasty food here, and it does always look fresh and nicely presented, but some lighter options would be welcome. The cocktails look amazing, but somehow I just about always order sparkling wine! I'd recommend keeping an eye on their Facebook page as they put up great photos and details of their specials and new offerings. They put up some enviable sunset photos too. All in all, a fun place in a brilliant location!

Bacchus is one of the better locations because of their good wine menu and well made cocktail and drinks list. They would get 5 stars in my books for location and the fact you can drink on the foreshore alone. Unfortunately though they have an incredibly ordinary food and tapas menu and no matter how many times I give that place a try I am always disappointed by their unoriginal, over fried, pre-packaged food. It's weird, because their menu and photos of food from Facebook always look so enticing, so maybe I'm just ordering wrong? That said, I won't say no to a nice vino on the deck as the sun sets in winter or summer, enjoying the 25+ eye candy and imagining I own my own apartment on the beach in Adelaide!

I do wonder at times why I would never step inside for a beer, but a part of me realises that maybe back in those days there wasn't anything all that interesting inside - just old men sitting at the bar drinking beer and smoking cigarettes. In fact the pubs that I did visit back then were all basically that. However this is another of those pubs that they have completely renovated and it now looks like one of those trendy pubs with a decent beer garden. Mind you the beer garden is basically non-smoking, which does add a change to a lot of the other pubs that you visit. It's not a bad place, but not a pub that I would regularly visit.

The service was instant and affable, whilst ordering at the bar, one of the staff overheard my drink order and immediately snapped open a ice cold cider and handed it to me. I cheerfully sat down and waited minutes for food to come careening out the kitchen door onto my table. I gambled on this simple pub food and ordered a half-dozen oysters. Surprisingly they were vibrant and fresh, with a healthy douse Worcestershire sauce. Next came the Chicken Burger, due to my 'Burger Fiend' status. The chips were well seasoned with chicken salt which I pondered on for a while with friends as to why they had sprinkled chicken flavoured salt on, because chicken was already the main feature of the dish. However the burger was delectable and full of the usual suspects all lathered with a spicy barbeque sauce. Not bad for $16. Unfortunately the wonderful experience was dampened by a sighting of a giant pepper shaker, that wasn't even offered to me by the waiting staff. A shameful display, I'll live on...

I've been going to the Lakes for about the last 15 years and I don't think this bar has changed much during this time. The interior is a bit drab and dark and not much natural light is allowed to get in. Nonetheless, there is a good selection of sports memorabilia to peruse. There are also a lot of screens which meant we were able to watch the races, footy and NBA at the same time. We had lunch as well, both selecting the cheeseburger for the quite extensive menu. Attended the official opening today of the new Big Shed venue on Port Road. Great venue and…read morefriendly staff. What let it down was the ridiculous price charged for the "craft" beers. Having grown up in the UK and enjoyed real ale for many years through CAMRA and such like it's disappointing that a new venue like this should charge $12 for a "pint" of beer for this can be best described as a metric pint, aka 375ml, whereas an imperial pint is about 550ml. In the UK you would pay around 4 pound for a 550ml pint of real ale - which is about $9. Why then do we have to be ripped off like this at the Big Shed - especially on opening day where you would think at least they would be offering specials. Shame on you - it's pure profiteering!
