Vegan black bean & sweet potato burger

I asked a vegan friend from Adelaide where to go with the family & this was on the list. I had vegan nachos -way too big & the black bean sweet potato burger. Burger pattie a big like my home cooked patties, sloppy, so one cut and it slurped out the sides. Great that there are vegan options in the CBD so hats off for that, for a family pub it's a tad noisy, even in the dining room. Kids liked their burgers and fish & wife enjoyed her pork belly. Be warned, very large servings, don't go entree & main one will do you. Nice wine list, big selection of beers, a decent feed. Overall ok.

I loved the Austral as a Uni student and today trying it for lunch you notice the restaurant costs for the food and the boutique bar costs for beers at $10 a pint for something standard. Went for the soft wrap tacos. As nice as they were for 2 for $14 it took over 45 minutes to receive them and to ask about them twice. The attitude of the waitress was terrible when she snarkily told us 5 tables were ahead of us. We only ordered tacos and nachos at the table not peking duck. Terrible service, over priced but a nice place to eat in the sun

The Austral is always packed with its patrons spilling into the sidewalks of Rundle Street. It's a great place to meet after work for a round of drinks on a Friday or a casual brew during the week. Much like the Exeter Hotel, the outside seating area is where the action is. As one could expect from a bar during daylight hours, inside the bar is a bit dark until the sun goes down. It's much more pleasant to be sitting outside enjoying the sunshine whilst you're knocking back a cold one. But be quick to secure your spot at an outdoor table, because this place is bustling with people on almost every day of the week - and they won't give up their prime seating positions without first putting up a fight. Drinks are cheap and they have all of the usual suspects on tap. The Austral also hosts live entertainment with a variety of local acts (mostly acoustic performances), which really winds things down and is perfect to relax to. Pool tables are also available inside if you've filled up on liquid confidence and have decided to take on your friends in a game. It has everything a bar should have, no more and no less.

The Austral. Many a time has been had. The Austral is definitely one of the busiest pubs in all of Adelaide. It is always packed out Friday and Saturday nights. I have even more lover for The Austral because of their fantastic support for financially deprived university students, such as myself. They offer drink specials for UniLife members and those with 'PocketPals'. $10 jugs of TED and such. They have a pool table which is hidden around in a somewhat elusive second bar room. If you want a table outside, as most patrons do, you'd best be early or keep your wits about you. They often fill up very quickly, especially on the aforementioned nights. I took a uni pub-crawl that I ran through here and they were also very accommodating. On top of their great drink options, service, and atmosphere, their food is damn good also. I've many a schnitzel and they are always well above average.

When I was doing my uni internship, we used to head down to The Austral for a few post work drinks (maybe more on a Friday night). It's a lovely, chilled place to catch up with friends after a long week, or on Friday/Saturday nights before heading out on the town. Most afternoons you can find people having a few beers outside, and the place is rarely empty. I'm not too sure why, but sitting outside at The Austral means two things: either you get stared at by passing people, or vice versa. It's the place for people-watching. That may be due to its location, which is right at the top of Rundle St near Hungry Jacks. Thus you get the flood of people that just crossed the road from Rundle Mall. You might also find it hard to walk past on a weekend night, because it gets quite crowded. Some dodging, cramming and weaving is required. It features great live music; I've heard some pretty decent funk/blues there, either in a band or playing solo. The staff are very friendly, and the food is good too. With timeless wooden furnishings and a clean setting, the ambiance is always pleasant and carefree. Highly recommended for those who like to hang out, drink and listen to live music.

Maybe you can look this good when you are that old!

Ok we weren't going to test the beer garden - it was 8 degrees - but just letting you know there are plenty of spots to sit depending on your mood. Pork belly, fish fingers looking more like generous fists, a chicken pie and franks dogs were our choices - and we all felt the meals were generous, different & delicious. Wed night is a Franks Dogs and beer special night & there's also mystery beer and mulled wine on the menu - an adventure in every glass! I'll be back for the beer garden in the warmer months - well worth a visit.

A great friend of mine had some going-away drinks here a few months ago and I was surprised to find a really pleasant pub - a little scruffy but in a sweet way. Whoever is in charge has done a great job making the most of the beat-up old premises with a collection of beautiful old lamps and comfy furniture. Plus the drinks are pretty cheap too. I felt something in the air - as though this place was just on the verge of becoming Adelaide's new hipster haunt. A bit of investigation of their Facebook page seems to reveal just that - an intention to draw people in with micro-brewery beers, ciders, DJ nights and live music. I haven't of much going on yet, but I'd definitely be willing to come back here - nice lighting does wonders.

However, as I was wandering through the city one afternoon with my friends, finishing off the pubs that needed to be finished off, we came upon this place. Actually, since we hadn't had any lunch we decided to stop off here for a meal, which basically meant that I landed up with a schnitzel. Yeah, it was quite nice, and there were also some decent beers on tap. The pub itself isn't that huge, but it is one of those pubs that of have been to on an infrequent basis. Oh, they also have a bottle shop just around the side.

I used to live a couple of blocks away from The Kings (previously the Kings Head) and must say I didn't go there overly often. I have been a few times of late, due to friends parties and the odd chance that I just happened to be around the area, and I must say I like it more than I used to. I think the crowd has a lot to do with my enjoyment of a bar, and it is certainly less pretentious than it used to be. The interior is pretty nice, with an overall rustic feel with some polished elements that lift the place up a notch or two. The Front bar is my favourite area (which is normal for me), and out the front is a really funky booth style design that kicks on a warm summer night. They have also made some kegs into tables (see the piccy) which really works. Right I'll put my interior designer silk scarf away for the time being and pop open a stubby. The beer selection is just how my fellow Yelper, Tegan H, describes....pretty darn spiffy! I tried a few myself, the last time I was sitting on the corner stool, but ended up with sticking with a couple of tried and true drops! I always feel that any pub where you are comfortable having a drink is handy in my book, but be warned that some of the brewskis (and spirits) can be a little costly (ATM's are dangerous!).

In my mind, Coopers Alehouse has always been a go to spot for schnitzel, so that's what I came for. Our table ordered a chicken parmi, a beef schnitzel and a fish & chips. Didn't realize that schnitzels don't come with salad so we also ordered side salad. The parmi was ok, wasn't as juicy as I remembered it to be. The beef schnitzel (with Diane sauce) was a bit underwhelming - there were definitely chunks of tendons or something, making it hard to cut and chew. The fish (flat head) was actually the most expensive dish - the batter was good and the fish was tender, so that was good. The chips were fresh and tasty too. Overall it was a good meal but I wish the schnitzels were better, since that was the focus of my meal.
