Sometimes I'm embarrassed about enjoying The Exeter. I really kind of like the place. It's not much to look at, but... I know a basketballer who hates The Exeter so much he makes sure to leave everyone in dour spirits before he takes his leave of the pub itself. I don't know why. Perhaps he wants everyone to hate The Exeter as much as he does. If you know someone like this, don't bring them, and you'll enjoy yourself just fine. It's a place to sit back and enjoy a quiet drink and some meaningless or profound conversation with your friends, or with people you've just met. I need to know a person before I can understand what they're shouting in a loud environment. I'm terrible at communication until I've learned a person's inflections and habits. Here, at The Exeter, is where I learn them. Then, if we want to blow our ear drums, we go to The Elephant. And I say that because the music isn't always very good here, and the dance floor is almost nonexistent. Sure, the place might look like crap as well, but for what I come here for, that doesn't affect my opinion of the place too much.

The Exeter is the type of place your average uni student might go and I certainly did when I was one of them. Now 30, I still go and have never been made to feel out of place or unwelcome. The beer garden with its robust wooden furnishing and event-poster bespeckled walls attracts more of your hipster/muso crowd. The garden has an indoor feel but it is open to the elements somewhat and I've been rained upon seated here. The side room is good for pub-grub and your late 20s-early 30s type, or anyone who actually wants to hear themselves talk. You can peer through the windows to the beer garden, and I once gave a thumbs up to a dude with a portable bike he'd managed to tuck under one of the tables through said window. A lot of the time many artists exhibit their work in this area of The Exeter. The outside areas are also good for people who want to chat over a pint. Most Thurs-Sun bands play in the front seating area or in the beer garden. The bands/solo-artists are not always rock, but the majority of the time they are certainly loud. I don't know why, the spaces don't seem to warrant the ear canal crushing volume. There are two bar areas. The front bar (the westernmost) and the back bar (the easternmost). Each has an appropriate door. The front bar is the smaller and when busy (which it is often), is a nightmare. The front bar has as much staff as the space can handle, and they're doing their best, but there's just not enough and you'll wait an age. The back bar has a lot more room for staff and punters alike. When it's busy service is, of course, slower, but it is faster (and less crowded) than the front bar. There's seating at the bar and standing-about room for people to have actual conversations, which I appreciate. The back bar is another area where it isn't all that loud. Late at night when not so busy, or in the afternoons, the staff will share a joke with you in this area. As has been said the toilets would have to be cleaned up to be considered vile, and the quantity of them (1-2) is inadequate. If that's the women's toilets I can't think what type of cesspool the men's is. The rest of the place is clean and tidy, which might explain why the contrast of the tiny, graffitied, vomit-laden, toilet-paper-riddled toilets are so disappointing ergo revolting.

The Exeter was probably the first bar I'd ever been to, for the sole reason of being able to get in when I was underage. I've had a lot of good memories at this bar, commonly involving my friends and I putting together any sort of pocket change we had to share a jug of beer. It was our haven for underage antics, until the government cracked down and forced them to do regular ID checks. By that time I was already of legal age and, sadly, once maturity kicked in the Exeter lost a lot of charm for me personally. To be fair, the Exeter's not all that bad. The beer is cheap, I've heard the food is good, and they pull together some pretty cool local live bands. If you're a people person, you're going to love this place because the Exeter is consistently packed throughout the week, a social hotspot if you will. Otherwise, you're going to absolutely hate this place. This is definitely not the kind of pub where you can sit at the bar and have a quiet drink with a friend or two. Beware - the Exeter has a serious hipster vibe going on that has the potential to scramble your bullshit filter. And if you're not there before 5PM, don't even bother trying to get an outdoor table out the front - that stuff is cutthroat. Thankfully in the past few months they added a whole row of tables around the side of the building, but even still, you'll be lucky to secure yourself a spot on a Friday or Saturday night.

the Exeter goes to no effort to impress with unnecessary upgrades, keeping the interior, building front, and all furnishings as original as possible... and this is why everyone loves the place. The Exetor used to be my favourite pub in Adelaide, and is an ideal place to have a quiet beer during the day. The friendly bar staff are as down to earth as the outside facade, and keep your glass half full without the fuss. Perfect place for a cold beer on a summer's afternoon, when the windows are open, or outside on the deckchairs. There is also an upstairs balcony overlooking Rundle Street, which extends as a dining area with separate bar. I recommend Currie nights Wednesday and Thursday, but it usually pays to book ahead. I know you should never judge a place by it's patrons, but when did the Exetor become so fucking pretentious? My other frustration is it has become a bit too overcrowded in the last few years, and as the anti- smoking laws I becoming more strict, finding a spare seat here on weekends is becoming more of a logistical nightmare. I can see this puts added pressure on the already grumpy security staff. A great pub for enjoying a relaxing beer during the day, but a nightmare at night. The only restorations this place needs is the attitude, and their best bet would be to start from the outside in.

Set to feel like a side street in a town, you will notice a subway chair on entry and three small stores. First up a deli prepping cured meat awesomeness, next up a barber and finally a recording studio. And yes, there is a barber set up on Friday night to get a cut while you enjoy a few drinks. It is quite well set up and really does create a different feeling in a bar. You are stepping off Rundle Street onto another street upstairs. In the middle you will find a long bar and a range of booths. Bottles of spirits line the back and four taps for brews. The cocktail menu has some twists to old favourites. I went for The Dreamer as I am a whisky girl. It was a good cocktail, a little acidic and fresh. It was a good cocktail, but nothing that really stands out in a crowd for $20. Next time I will order the Old Fashioned which had some coconut in it from memory. Interesting. What I really like about this bar is the aesthetics. It's almost trying to create an experience that no one else is doing with the shop fronts. I think it's quite clever. The owner here is a real sweetheart and really trying to do something different. Give it a few months and I think that this bar will be pumping! Well done for effort and looking forward to see this bar grow.

We moved on straight to the bar and were greeted by friendly staff and were quick to seat us at the bar, although there was plenty of seating as it was only around 7pm. The bartender knew his stuff and quickly made me 'Pistols at Dawn' a smashing mix of chipotle fused tequila with capsicum, lime and cucumber. It was absolutely amazing and so tasty. We got to talking to the bar staff and they really knew their stuff, making my partner a cocktail off the menu. The ambience was great, music was loudish but set the scene for the NYC style bar. The seats close to the windows offered some great people watching opportunities. The menu looked great, mainly snack food but offering NYC style pastrami sandwiches, they sounded so good-why did we just have dinner!? Definitely worth putting on your cocktail list - 5 stars for service and knowledge a 5 stars for taste and accuracy. Wish I could critique the food - maybe next time. This is a bar definitely on my plus list. This reminds me of the cool funky bars you get in London or even definitely NY and I would be heading back soon for sure.

However, as I was exiting the bar with my group, I stopped on the stairs to wait for a friend who was in the toilet. The bouncer approached me and asked me to exit the premises, to which I responded that I was on my way out with my group of friends, I was just waiting for a friend in the bathroom as I said I would. The bouncer responded to this in an agitated manner, telling me that I need to 'get out'. There was no commotion that proceeded this aggravated response, however my friend was exiting the bathrooms at that exact moment, to which I highlighted, stating that 'my friend is literally coming out of the bathroom right now, see? We are all leaving right now, what is the problem?' I proceeded to head down the stairs to meet my friends who were waiting on the street, and as I was exiting the door of this establishment, the bouncer went out of his way to say "that's right, get the hell out of here you faggot." I will be honest, and admit that this comment enraged me, and I responded with something along the lines of "Excuse me, what the actual f**k did you just call me? Did you just call me a faggot? Do you want to say that again??" At this response, the bouncer raised a closed fist to my face, centimetres away, tell me to f**k off, and asking if I wanted a fight. I highlighted the fact that I had a group of friends with me that numbered close to 8, challenged him to call me a faggot again, and that everyone with me was was a 'faggot' who wouldn't stand by while I was attacked. This highlighted observation prompted to bouncer to look around him, and step back within the relative protection of the establishment that he was apparently protecting. I cannot for the life of me think of what I did to prompt this aggression, and homophobia. I have many LGBTQIA+ friends who have recommended this bar to me before, and this was my first time visiting. First of all, whiskey is native to the bluegrass state (KENTUCKY) and though whiskey is 'the drink' of the moment it's time too shall pass... Since the 1700s New Orleans is and has always been a rum city, but hey, why be bothered with the details or with authenticity, right? I mean who cares that the iconic poboy sandwich is supposed to be served on a French baguette (which could likely be sourced from another local biz just around the corner -Le Carpe Diem, Grenfell Street) when you could use a (possibly cheaper?) inferior Vietnamese roll? Back to the food: we sampled the fried chicken which was a very small serve for the price and it was accompanied by a mayonnaise 'sauce' - why is it needed? Is there bread to make a sandwich?!? Um, no. So, I gave it a go and found the sauce bland, tasteless, and utterly unnecessary. It's mayonnaise! With nothing else. Fried chicken in the States doesn't ever come with a sauce! Ever. Back to the chicken, it had a delightful crunch and was reasonably well seasoned but far too greasy. If served with grease glistening then it should sit on a piece of bread to soak up the oil OR should be blotted with paper. Not good. Next we had the Marlin tartar which was one of the few unique and creative takes on NOLA cuisine; it was presented on a crisp much like a Zapps' Potato Chip (for Western Hemi folks). This is something I can recommend without reservation. Then we sampled the rabbit stew - very, very tasty with just enough seasoning, however too much rice and not enough rabbit. One last thing, it is a total and complete sacrilege to have a Mardi Gras party on the first Friday of Lent. Pure and simple commercialization. If you can't do it on Shrove Tuesday, just give it up!

The vibrant space is cheerful and contemporary due to the bright décor and ornaments. Multi-coloured commercial pendants hang from the ceilings adding to its vibrancy. The bright orange and very long couch takes pride of place along the wall where most of the downstairs seating takes place. The high ceilings provide a greater sense of space, also giving it a very airy feel. Acoustics is not an issue on this particular evening even with an almost full house, excluding the use of upstairs space. It would be interesting to see how it holds up with a full house. Perusal of the menu saw us appreciating the different items being offered such as Som Tum platters, grilled scallops with lemongrass butter, far removed from the typical offerings that seem to dominate most Thai restaurants and cafes. Recommendation was made and we ended up ordering a feast. Som-Tum was ordered, so was the scallops. We also added chicken satays, chicken wings, Tom Yum Prawns soup, cabbage rolls and fish skewers. It was the perfect assortment to get a real feel for the type of cuisine they were trying to bring to Radelaide. We learnt that the dinner menu was created to reflect the different dishes from the different towns and cities of Thailand they the partners originated from. Every single dish we had was delightfully Moorish, especially the chicken wings. I could easily have devoured a bucket of those. It was a perfect combination of sticky, crunchy and fresh flavours. The grilled scallops with lemongrass butter were also divine. Tom yum soup made sense for cold wintery nights so, was very welcoming indeed. Not a massive fan of the cabbage rolls, as I found it rather beige, however the sauce was awesome though and made up the slack. Chicken satays are served with small triangles of toast and a cucumber relish. We both thought that was interesting, but it appears that is how it is eaten in Thailand. Our evening was most enjoyable. We had great food, great attentive service and very informative staff who were more than happy to enlighten us on how each dish came about.
