The Crown and Sceptre has always had a place in a lot of Adelaide resident's hearts. A quick google search will reveal that it has been there since the 1870's and is a great example of the "Italianate" style.
This beautiful building on the southern end of King William Street was designed by the architectural firm Woods & McMinn who also designed many prominent Adelaide buildings and hotels, and of which one partner EJ Woods - who also designed the Adelaide Town Hall and General Post Office - would go on to form the well-known architectural firm Woods Bagot.
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) the Crown and Sceptre sat dormant for a few years until about a year ago, when it was started up again by new, younger owners. This is noticeable as the pub definitely looks like it has had a good polish and buff and the menu has been revamped. Inside, the bar and fridges are classic old school pub style and the décor is neat, but a bit eclectic: with art for sale and cosy, ambient, but still well-lit lighting scheme.
A friend and I were having a catch up after about a year without seeing each other, as he lives overseas, so we wanted something a bit spesh. We asked the staff and they recommended the makers mark bourbon marinated buffalo scotch fillet, with paprika dusted chat potatoes and autumn veggies. For $32 it was a very tasty and well cooked meal. The different coloured roast beetroot, beans, potatoes, pumpkin, caramelised onions and asparagus were the perfect match to the steak and its jus. I highly recommend this dish.
We were deep in conversation, but there was a gala type event, with comedy, music and all sorts called "Monday Night for the Lonely Soul Variety Show" going on in the main room. Fortunately, the pub is well built and sound doesn't travel too much, so we could still have a conversation with that going on in the next room. I will have to head back on a Monday night as from what we heard it sounded pretty entertaining.
I will also definitely be back to try other items on the menu, or just for a few beers and a good night out. It's great to see the Crown and Sceptre back in action. read more
