    a glass of ciderhouse

We were in the area and this was our second stop of the day. As we walked in we were greeted by a bartender who introduced himself to us. His name is Lou, he was quite sincere, very nice. We sat down and he provided what was available as we sat down and reviewed the menu. We both went with a cider flight. I enjoyed them all but the bourbon and blackberry were my favorites. However Blackberry hands down was the best for me. It wasn't a sweet cider as one may expect. Lou came back to us and asked if we like hot and spicy and we both looked at each other and said yes. He brought over a sample of the raspberry salice(Thai & Chili peppers ) it was delicious with a hint of the spice towards the end of the drink. It didn't make me cough which is a rare. Most are too much and I begin to cough but this was perfect. I asked if he being the cider maker puts in towards the end of the secondary fermentation and he said yes. It was truly terrific. We liked this place because it's in an older building, walk in and you see liquor from locally being West End Distillery our next stop and everywhere else around. Older music playing. It had a really good vibe to the place. It wouldn't have that vibe without Lou's help. He's an amazing bartender, conversationalist which thrives with this place. This was our favorite stop in the Athens area. I highly recommend this place.

Cider is a great alternative to beer. Maybe you can argue that it's healthier since it's made with fruit. West End Ciderhouse is a great spot. It has a lot of variety of ciders. There's also cocktails and food. West End has a much different atmosphere and drink menu than a typical bar in Athens. It doesn't get that many students in here. This is kind of out of the way for them. It's located on the west side of town obviously. The drink menu is also more adult oriented, which means you don't come here to do shots. Ciders cost more than a typical beer. It's still only about $5 for a pint. The one I like the most is the Zingiber. It gets a little spice from ginger. This is described by them as semi sweet. It also has some food items. Most small sides are $3 or so. Cider here is actually pretty cheap. Even though it costs more than a typical dive bar. They also have hard liquor if you must have that.

Fantastic cozy bar off the main drag in Athens, Ohio. Expertly crafted cocktails including a delicious house margarita with a cider top - we opted for the tart cherry cider top. West End Ciderhouse offers a wide array of cocktails, ciders (of course) and local beers as well as a few snacks.

There have a nice selection of hard ciders, special drinks and craft distilled spirits. This is their Walnut Old Fashion. Also they have a cooler of Grab and Go drinks. Beautiful old building and a huge bar. If you are looking for great drinks check them out.

"This is, like, a special place." That's what the college kid next to me told his drinking buddy as they bellied up to the bar. I don't always agree with college kids, but when I do, it's because they have excellent taste in craft beers and ciders. There's a ton of places to let loose and get cheap beer around Athens, but if you'd like a little slower pace and higher quality, you should come check out West End Ciderhouse. I'm glad I did! I was in town for a wedding and checking out local options. I came alone and it seems many people go out together in this town, but West End was a place where I felt totally fine being by myself. I started out in a booth in the corner, charging my phone while I read a book and sipped my drink slowly. As more and more people came in, I gave up the large table and moved to a tall chair at the bar. I ordered a couple of their signature ciders and loved every one of them. I tried the Kelly's Blueberry Sweet Cider and their standard Semi-Sweet Cider. They also have guest ciders and beers on tap along with wine and cocktails, so there's a little something for everyone. At the wedding they ended up serving the Semi-Sweet Cider and I indulged in that throughout the evening. My friend later informed me that a keg about half the size of a regular one cost almost twice as much as the other alcohol she was serving, but we agreed it was well worth it!

I saw the outside window & I automatically felt to come inside! Very happy with the staff, the brews, the ciders & home made ginger soda!!!! Worth trying all the beers!! Back side patio is charming :)

So a Cider house in Athens eh? Spot on! I have been to a few, this once was on key with others I'd been to as well. It is tiny but the owners and bartenders were very very friendly, I had probably more than I should have in samplers. The patio really got me, I enjoyed the old world feel from what is probably a 100+ year old patio area. They also had a nice selection of a few local beers and local meeds. I was here at Ohio Brew Week so perhaps this is not always a staple. Side not the bathrooms were really nice.. this is kinda big when you are out drinking and find your self needed to use one on a day long shuffle.

Their special that night was a flight of 6 for $5. Six was the perfect number - three I wanted to try, three my bf wanted to try.

We were honestly excited!! baby sleeping, toddler ready to eat, outdoor seating available. It should have been the perfect stop. It went downhill fast. My husband asked the host for highchairs and both were broken. Wobbly, broken buckle straps (safety issue) we don't risk it with our kids. After asking again, they found another one. Not a great start, but okay. Then we waited at least 10 minutes before our server even came to get drink orders. When she finally did, we placed our food order and she didn't write a single thing down. By the time we needed refills, our server had completely disappeared for 20-30 minutes. Eventually a different server brought our meals. When my husband asked for drink refills, she told us we could refill them ourselves at the station in the front. What?? We've never been told to go refill our own drinks at a sit down restaurant ‍ My husband asked where our server was, and the second server clearly wanted nothing to do with helping us since we weren't "her table." He ended up going inside to find a manager, and the entire front area was full of staff gossiping and arguing with each other. Total chaos. The manager eventually came out and did absolutely nothing to make the situation right. On top of the service issues: * Outdoor seating with no lids for drinks = bugs flying into cups * They clearly need new highchairs if you're advertising as family friendly * Food was very sub par. Mac and cheese was NOT it, brisket was just okay. Dry but good flavor I guess LOL. We were really disappointed. This stop had so much potential, but the service and overall experience were a mess. Honestly, skip this place and pack a lunch!!!!. ‍

Despite lots of creativity on the offing behind the bar, my go-to is the blue G&T with lemon peel served in a martini glass because as a regular says, "F..K ICE!" For those who remember the menu at earlier versions of Athens Uncorked, this one will have some familiar offerings. That isn't a mistake as the kitchen lead at the now defunct Athens Uncorked now runs the show at The Side Bar. I'm partial, then and now, to the baked brie with candied bacon bits although the jam topping works well too. And they don't short you the crackers for this easy shareable. The pretzel bites are a carb injection but again, if sharing, the dipping experience is one you can get behind if you don't make it a habit. I can't speak to the live music and performances they feature on a small stage but I am told it is an inclusive and welcoming performance space. I will say the space has also worked for informal but organized catered receptions after an event on campus. They do have a full dinner menu that I will have to try a few more times and come back with an update.

It's for sure a place to take a guest or have a classier evening. The worst part is the prices, but it's still better service than the restaurant side. Casa Cantina began in 1993 when the Casa Nueva employees expanded to a full service bar. The infused vodka cocktails are what its best known for. I have only been only to try a few beverages here since it can be costly. The blueberry mojito is the best. It's sweet and tangy. The margaritas are good if kind of watery. A glass is about $5 to $6, while a pitcher is about $20 to $30. There's also premium and super premium margarita that use higher quality liquor. Among the vodka infused cocktails, I most liked the cucumber gimlet. This is about $5, with cucumber infused vodka, lime juice, and simple syrup. Another good drink is the Ohio Mule. This is about $5, with Buckeye Vodka, Reed's Ginger Brew, and lime juice. Casa Cantina has a limited menu of some items from Casa Nueva. The house made salsas are kick ass. The black bean is garlicy, and the habanero is burning hot. I am a supporter of independently owned companies so I want to like this. It's run by people who care but may not have a lot of experience. This is worth a return because it's still a good place for chilling and enjoying a margarita or an infused vodka.

There is a stage and a mirror ball and a small PA, it would be a fun place to see a band. I hear my beloved Phantods have played Casa. It seems as friendly and tasty and as expensive as I remember it. Definitely worth a look if you're in Athens for more than a day.
