SANTA ANA RIVER TRAIL is made of hard dirt and is used by hikers, joggers, and those on bicycles…read more This trail travels along one side, and sometimes along both sides, of the Santa Ana River and, according to my map, extends from Huntington Beach all the way northeast to Anaheim Hills. Anaheim Hills is just south of Chino Hills State Park. Although the scene from GREASE that features the hot rod race resembles the dry riverbed (bordered with concrete walls) of the Santa Ana River, it was not filmed here. Instead, this scene was filmed at the dry concrete river-bottom of Los Angeles River. MY USUAL JAUNT. My usual hike is from my apartment in Costa Mesa (see, photo of me posing by this starting place), then along Baker Street, then Mesa Verde Drive West to Adams Avenue, then across the Adams Avenue Bridge. A trailhead occurs on both sides of the Adams Ave. Bridge. See, photographs of me posing on Adams Ave Bridge with Santa Ana River in the background, and me also posing on a footbridge (also with Santa Ana River in the background). This footbridge enables hikers to walk on either of the two trails that take you along Santa Ana River. During all of my dozen hikes on this trail, the Santa Ana River was empty of water, except that beyond Victoria Street Bridge the high tide from the ocean kept the riverbed partly filled, and at this point you can enjoy the view of waterbirds paddling about in the river. MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT. Usually, I continue on to Huntington Beach, then hike north to Beach Boulevard, then circle back on Atlanta Avenue, and re-connect with the Santa Ana River Trail and continue on back to my apartment. But once, I decided to continue hiking northwards on Huntington Beach until I reached the legendary Ruby's. And so, immediately after crossing Adams Avenue Bridge and turning left at the trailhead of Santa Ana River Trail, I encountered a line of about ten old people taking a rest (or whatever). I was so thrilled with the fact that I was finally taking a twenty-five mile hike to Ruby's (and back) that I glanced at the line of old people and proclaimed, "I AM GOING TO RUBY'S, AND I HAVE A RESERVATION." Some of them laughed at my joke, because nobody makes reservations at Ruby's (at least, not at the out-of-doors ordering and pick-up window).

So happy I found this trail entrance. It's safe bike trail to either Newport or Huntington Beach.read more
