Things I love about Essential Gardeners:…read more * They really know and care about plants. If you're a native plant geek like me, you def. want to work with these folks. They know native plants vs. non-natives, what weeds are most important to tackle, etc. * If you don't have a perfect idea of what you're looking to do with your garden, they will take the time to talk with you and walk you through that process. If it's been a while since you last asked them to come by but you don't know what to ask that they do, you can just say "Help!" and they'll do a great job. * They are very respectful when it comes to working with a specific budget and never try to upsell services. * Stefany and the crew are respectful, considerate, and just plain good people. I get a ton of compliments on my garden. I was out getting my mail the other day and two people were walking down the sidewalk and I saw one of them point to my yard and say to their friend "I wish I had a garden like that!" Have to say, it's mostly due to Stefany and the crew's work over the last five years or so!

None of my emails to clarify or specify obvious things like the pruning of hedges that were spilling into the driveway were outlandish or out of scope as indicated. Throughout our brief relationship, I tried to give these guys the benefit of the doubt, but simple questions were met with the aggressive attitude you see below. Mine is not the only review to indicate this level of unprofessional behavior following service that was incomplete. I definitely do not make a habit of negative reviews (this would be my first and only to date), but I did want to do my best to provide what I feel to be a fair recap of my experience with Essential Gardeners in case any others find it of use. I certainly wish I had paid more attention to the review that was so similar to my experience. I stand by my one star review. I acknowledge that some work was done and therefor did not go down a path of "if I could give no stars..." However there is no part of me that could recommend this company to another.

I browsed around the shop while the owner was on a call. They do sell a variety of flowers by the stem. I will go back for my local flower needs.

The shop was open and the staff members were lovely and helpful. I'm admittedly particular about flowers because my grandmother owned a floral shop in Seattle. I specifically asked for fragrant blooms, such as freesia or stock. I was told those were unavailable, but that they had some especially fragrant roses, so we agreed to use those. We gave them a $100 budget, which they respected. The finished arrangement was pretty, but the tall, vertical vase left much of the stems exposed, so the overall design didn't feel as polished as I expected for the price. My greatest concern, however, was the fragrance. The roses smelled strongly of an artificial rose fragrance, more like room spray, perfume, or detergent than the natural scent of fresh roses. When we presented the bouquet, the recipient's first question was whether the flowers had been sprayed with rose water. I cannot confirm whether anything was applied to the flowers, but the fragrance was extremely off-putting and did not smell natural to us. If naturally fragrant flowers weren't available, I would have preferred to be told that so we could choose something else or return another day.

I decided I wanted to make all my own centerpieces (25 total in 5x5 glass cubes I found on CL), my own bouquet, my bridesmaids bouquets, and all the corsages and boutonnieres the day before the wedding. Ambitious, but was completely doable with help. About 2 weeks before the wedding, I went to the stall and talked to Tong. I chose a $5 bouquet with various huge dahlias in reds, oranges and yellows (perfect lucky colors for a Chinese wedding!) and asked if he could make 35 of these. No problem, Tong replied with a friendly smile. The one day before the wedding, my BMs and I drove down to Pike at 8:30AM and picked up all the flowers, which were ready in boxes for us. All we had to do was take them home and cut them down to size and add water to the vases. If you have the help arranging, take advantage of the great resource of flower vendors at Pike Place. The flowers are freshly cut, already arranged, local, and prices are better than florists. Especially around peak wedding season in late August and September, dahlias in many colors and varieties bloom readily in Western Washington. Will definitely come back to Tong to pick up a bouquet for special occasions!
