I have worked with Mickey Fleskes on two major retaining walls, a driveway, and a stairway of about…read more80 steps in two pours. He is very precise in his bids. He is very experienced working on hills and has a hand crew for excavation if that is needed. He has been thriving on mostly word of mouth referrals, including local Fortune 100 executive estates, acting as a concrete subcontractor for other builders, and doing ordinary jobs for homeowners like you and me. He has also done projects at the Coast. He is probably not the best contractor for very small jobs at rock bottom pricing where experience means nothing. For stairs, I developed with him a slip resistant 3/8 no minus crushed basalt exposed aggregate finish and the concrete has fiberglass reinforcement and of course rebar. It was a project that included sweeping curves on a hill and turned out perfectly. It required his crew of hand excavators and hand soil movers. One of the walls on a slope was built on a stepped foundation, ranged from 4 to 12 feet, and required 65 yards of compacted backfill, shot in by an aggregate conveyor. On that project, we upped the concrete mix PSI to shorten the time to strength for the backfill. I pulled concrete samples and had them tested in an independent lab and they were spot on PSI spec. His crew did a challenging job easily. He is very good for projects on hills requiring a concrete pump. He installed the wall foundation drains, and at the same time new gutter drains, including sourcing, delivering, wrapping the pipe in drain cloth, and installing it. Suggest using perforated 4" ABS pipe and installing clean outs and sweeps so it can be snaked. The neighbor spec builder installed Home Depot-style flexible pipe which can never be snaked, and as a result has water problems with their foundation. Mickey also did a foundation replacement for another Yelper I referred. He's been working in concrete in Portland so long that he has a whole network of semi-retired concrete finishers. Concrete finishing is both an art and a science where experience counts. He has worked often with the structural engineer in my other reviews and Mike's Waterproofing, both top in their specialties in our area. And fun fact, he was an Olympic-ranked swimmer in his early days and his wife is a locally noted athletic coach. The only way to contact him is by voice phone. Mickey Fleskes Concrete is not only one of the most experienced concrete contractors in our area, but also experienced in working on hills and on challenging concrete problems.

We hired Allison Concrete to build a retaining wall behind our barn in 2022. It was next to impossible to get a company out to our property at that time to build the wall, with different companies giving me a variety of excuses. And, then, I called Allison Concrete. Sergio came out and gave me a very reasonable bid and started the work in a timely fashion. We didn't have to wait 3 - 6 months as was the case with more than one company. This year, we had an immediate, and very urgent need, to have a rock retaining wall built due to a failure in the fall by another company. We, again, thought of Allison Concrete in hopes that they could correct the failed wall and my wife's broken heart! Sergio came out "same day" to assess the disaster and see if he could remedy the situation out front. We received Sergio's extremely reasonable bid within 48 hours and quickly hired him to get the job done. Much to our surprise, Sergio put us on his schedule the following week. Within 2 days, Sergio and a helper created the most beautiful wall to the point that we could hardly remember the muddy disaster that we had to look at all winter through our kitchen window!! Correcting the failed wall and building a new wall was a big job and took a large backhoe as well as artistic skills to construct, as some of the large rocks/boulders weighed about 2000 pounds. We are looking at hiring Allison Construction for another job that just came up; concrete footings for a gazebo that will be built above our hot tub. Not only is Sergio the epitome of a true professional, he has a heart of gold and has a sincere desire to see his customers satisfied and happy! My wife is extremely happy with her new retaining wall! Sergio is always on time, cleans up his work space at the end of each day and works hard with no breaks that we saw! In a world of questionable contractors, Allison has never let us down or ever leaves us with any questions, doubts or concerns. If you're looking to hire the best, then Sergio is who you need for your next job!

We interviewed 4 other contractors but he was the only one that gave us ideas on how to make it better than I could have imagined! What originally started as a single concrete slab in the back yard turned into a show piece walkway in the front yard and a back yard patio that was nice enough to add a gazebo! You would think that with all the extra add ons it would have been way over budget but it ended up costing much less than all the other quotes! We are looking at having Jose put in a new 28'x28' slab in the other side of the yard for a possible basketball hoop or, gosh, anything. I really recommend this company. Jose is very personable, professional, and very very qualified. Thanks Again Jose!

The quality of the work was far below what I expected -- the finish was uneven, the edges were sloppy, and the stairs don't even look straight. What's worse, when I tried to raise my concerns, they acted like it wasn't a big deal and didn't take responsibility at all. The stairs already show cracks and rough spots after only a short time, which clearly means poor workmanship and no attention to detail. I paid good money expecting a professional job, but instead I got something that looks rushed and unprofessional. They might be nice people, but being "nice" doesn't make up for bad work and no accountability. I would not recommend this contractor to anyone who wants quality, reliability, or respect for your property and your time.

This was my first time doing a project of this size for myself. I wanted a 30'x50' metal RV garage built on a concrete slab with an 80' asphalt driveway on my 5 acre property. I contracted for surveying, engineering, geotechnical support, and worked with the county for all permitting. After selecting my metal building contractor, I called Leo's company for an estimate after seeing the many positive reviews he had on Google and Yelp. In the excavating, concrete, and asphalt areas, I had a difficult time finding single contractors that did all three areas. Besides Leo's estimate, I was able to obtain one other. Other contractors would say they worked in all three areas but upon visiting my site, they would say they just did one area but had contacts that could provide estimates in the other areas. Leo's site visit and subsequent interactions put me completely at ease. He had done his homework, deep diving the plans I had sent him. His estimate was in the ballpark of the other and he provided pictures of his other jobs that proved that he had more than enough expertise to complete my project. Over the course of my project, I came to rely upon Leo to help me overcome obstacle after obstacle due to my inexperience working across the trades and with the county. In one example, we had a conference call to talk to the engineer to determine how best to build up the ground to make it level for the slab with a mostly level driveway that would drain properly, and T'd from the original driveway. In another example, I did not find the building permit on the county's electronic system until after the concrete slab had been poured. The first geotechnical report had made "suggestions" that the county made "mandatory" in the building permit, one of which was having a geotechnical expert write an assessment after the forms were constructed and before concrete was poured. I was able to have the geotechnical engineer visit the site and inspect after the fact. Leo made himself available to answer questions and he had pictures of the rebar and forms. A positive report was developed that satisfied the county. Leo told me that he likes jobs that are my size and up to 12 homes at a time so he can be responsive to his commitments. For me, he was on site when he said he would be. The size of his crew was always right for the job at hand and no one was ever not fully engaged. If you have a major self-funded project and are looking for someone you can trust on your team, look no farther than Leo Lopez and Lovaz Excavating LLC.
