Pork schnitzel with mashed potatoes and rotkohl

West Berlin did not disappoint! It was my first time experiencing German cuisine and my first restaurant experience in Alaska. We ordered the pretzels, a beer flight, pork schnitzel, and schweinebraten. The pretzels came with beer cheese and mustard. The beer cheese was a new experience for me and I preferred the mustard, but my partner thought it was fantastic. The pretzels were on the colder side, but still delicious so I can't complain! The waitress was friendly and attentive. She helped elevate the comfort that came from both the hearty food and casual atmosphere of the restaurant. I was surprised we were some of the couple people there on a Saturday. I would absolutely recommend this place and look forward to trying a different dish next time!

Food: 7/10. It was warm but came out reaaaallly quickly and wasn't HOT so I have to wonder how fresh it really was. Service: 2/10. The server was brash. One person in our small party asked if something could be without mustard. The server said "absolutely not, it's already in there and the cooks are not going to undo all of their work for that. It's unreasonable." A bit of a harsh explanation for someone who has never had German food. Ambiance: 7/10. It was cute and there were a lot of different flags, although when we went in we were the only people in there so I couldn't say much about the atmosphere.

Only German food I know of in the state, very good and good price. Definitely go check it out

Love this place. Busier at lunch vs dinner, but always accommodating and no line. The schnitzel just satisfies. Some say it's not as good as home-cooked, well, sometimes I like it when others cook for me and everything comes out hot at the same time! The house made pretzels with beer cheese, schnitzel w/gravy (no mushrooms) with sides of just spätzle or spätzle and fries for the kids is so simple and comforting. The currywurst is also delicious, we get it without the sauce or on the side since it is a curried ketchup and a bit strong for children. Beers are delicious, they have Fruh Kolsch and a Ayinger Brau-Weiss on tap in 250ml, 500ml, or 1L steins. Wasn't a fan of cable TV news playing constantly but oh well. Highly recommend for the food and beer.

Hefty, delicious food for a great price. Sauerkraut meatballs are delicate and moist, brisket nice and tender, and strudel as a sweet finish. The sandwich was a tad big and definitely needs that aioli to not feel too chokey with the fried meat and bread, but still tasty and with a large serving of fries! The beers and friendly staff are fantastic as well. Will definitely be back, with a completely empty stomach prepared.

If you're looking for something new to eat, this would be an excellent place. It has a home cooked meal feel to it. Different flavors and hearty taste. Great comfort food option I think. I thought the pork schnitzel was a little on the dry side. Even with gravy, it was a little chewy despite of how thin it was. I also hoped that the cabbages were a little more thinly sliced. The server lady was very efficient and quick in getting order which I liked. The food came out very quick too. Good to have its own parking lot. I might return if I'm craving some comfort food but overall it was not my favorite restaurant. You might like it though!

Yum and yum! We stopped in for a quick lunch and West Berlin totally hit the spot! The service was great and very attentive! I ordered the Jaegerschnitzel, it was sooooo good! The mushroom sauce and the perfectly cooked meat were spot on! The spaetzle was the ideal side for this dish. I tried the potato salad too, but it was more German and I guess I'm forever stuck in how my Polish grandma made it. I think next time I'll double up on the spaetzle! Great meal, great location, great service!

What a surprise treat this place is! Basically everything is house-made, from the aioli to the breads. The restaurant inside really felt like we were transported to Germany or what I imagine it would be like anyway. Hubby and I really enjoyed the food. Service was good too. Give them a try.

Came here for an earlier dinner (5-530ish) with a party of 8. Note that if your group is large, they ask that you make a reservation in advance to accommodate large groups. They did seat us without one, but I wouldn't expect this every time. Tables are spaced out far apart for covid social distancing. I don't eat German very often so take this review with a grain of salt. I ordered the Rahmschnitzel with potato salad and mashed potatoes. The pork was tender with a nice crunchy outside drenched in a sauce that was to drool over (I love a good cream sauce). Regretfully so, I should've doubled up on the mashed potatoes - so creamy. The potato salad was a bit sour for my liking.

I was really disappointed in the food here. The Schnitzel was very thin almost like Milanesa, the gravy's (Rahm and Jäger) had little flavor and the Rotkohl was sour and under cooked. Sadly the prices were very high too. The service was good and the restaurant itself clean and inviting.

If I could 4.5 star rate West Berlin, I would. Service was nothing to complain about. The restaurant was fairly quiet when we went. The beers we ordered were good and so was the food. I would eat there again if I could.

Awesome food and service. We got the meatballs and schnitzel. Definitely coming back again soon.

Schnitzel Roll and German potato salad $10

We were the only people in here when we arrived around 12:30 on a Saturday. It's cold out, so maybe less people are willing to venture out. This is my first visit. The menu is limited, but I can appreciate that as sometimes it can be overwhelming to pick something. While the sauerkraut balls sounded amazing, no one else at my table likes it so I decided against ordering it. The currywurst also sounded good, but it seemed a heavy portion. I decided to get the Schnitzel Sandwich and German potato salad. When ordering I was put off by the waitress. My aunt had ordered and there was a lull, so I decided to say my order when I was gruffly interrupted by the waitress telling me it's not my turn and that my aunt needed to pick her two sides. OK, I understand that, but she also didn't ask my aunt what her two sides were so with the silence I thought it was an indicator that we were done with my aunt. My aunt asked for soup as a side which she stated she would pay the up charge. That then lead the waitress off on a tangent about some "idiot" let it happen as a side one day even though soup is not listed as a side and now because of that "idiot" customers expect it. I think she repeated "idiot" a good five times to us. My aunt still said again it was fine she would pay an up charge. Then we were told that it's fine she won't charge her because of said "idiot" from the past. This was our first visit, we weren't expecting anything as far as special treatment. We just wanted to try a new cuisine. That being said everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. My schnitzel was fine. There was a lot of onion that I picked off, but it was fine. Definitely a knife and fork sandwich. The pretzel bun was very delicious. I liked the aioli they served on the side. I wasn't a fan of the potato salad. It seemed the potatoes weren't cooked enough or something, but whatever it was I wasn't a fan. I tried my aunts spaetzle as it's new to me. It was interesting and is essentially a fried rivel type dumpling. I may come back to try the other two options I was interested in, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go again.

We had been there a couple of months ago and thought the food and service was great. Unfortunately, our last visit was not the same. We had to wait an hour and a half to be served. During the waiting time, two other couples came in and were served their food before our waitress came to our table. The meat was dry, very little gravy and the spaeztle had little taste. After being only there for forty minutes after our food was served, the waitress said that it was 9:00, we had to leave "because she didn't get paid overtime". Very rude service and poor quality food. It will be a long time before we go back. read more

We were told this was the only German restaurant in town and it had a 4 star rating so I asked my husband to stop in. *Before I start, we lived in Vilseck Germany for 3 years, we traveled the country extensively. Oh, and my maiden name is Ruden.... yeah my family is German. We started with the sauerkraut balls, they were ok. Unique. Had a mustard sauce with it, would have been better with traditional senf My husband says they tasted like tuna, I don't agree on this. We both ordered the rham schnitzel, it was ok... the pork cut was thick for schnitzel and the sauce lacked flavor and lacked mushrooms... usually there's a lot of mushrooms but there was not many, at least not on my plate. I ordered the Rotkohl and kartoffelsalat. The kartoffelsalat was hands down the worst I've ever had. I couldn't even eat it. And honestly that is one of my favorite things my Oma makes. It lacked oil, it was heavy on the vinegar which is pretty standard but lacked oil. I'm also not sure they cooked the potatoes in broth. The rotkohl was pretty good, I've always had it with apple and raisin, there's didn't have that, but it was good. The texture was firm and I liked that. I will note, I thought the service was friendly. Like Germany it was a laid back pace. I personally won't be back. I can cook better German food than what's served here. If you want a relaxed meal at a slow pace with a friendly waitress.... and don't have a refined palette for German cuisine, then this is your place. read more

This place is awesome!!! We ate here on a super snowy night and it was just perfect. The staff was friendly, food delicious, and setting quaint. We had seen a few reviews of people saying it took a while to get their orders, but that was not the case for us. We placed our orders and had our food in about 15 minutes. We ordered the Jaegerschnitzel and Rahmschnitzel with spaetzle and potato salad. Everything was amazing, and the gravy was sublime. We were also pleased with the portions, and prices weren't bad at all. We will definitely be going back again. read more

The German word for "yuck" is "iggit"...at least, that's what the Google translator told me. I had semi high hopes for West Berlin. I had seen it a lot, as I spent some time in 2014/2015 working nearby in Mt. View. It was at that time that I totally judged a book by its cover, and deemed West Berlin "iggit". I had all but forgotten about this place when it got brought up at work last week. Everyone was raving about it and I couldn't believe it. Could it be true? This seemingly hole-in-the-wall was a diamond in the rough? Potentially serving up recipes passed down for generations of hot, fresh, authentic German food? Not so fast. I should have stuck with my original thought. I let the people at work trick me into thinking that this was a possibility. Either they have mediocre taste, or I am a whiny hündin (German for bi*ch). My dear fiancé and I walked in late yesterday afternoon to a completely empty restaurant. We were told to seat ourselves. We chose a table next to a window in the corner. Immediately upon sitting down we were subjected to sticky tables. The menus were stuck TO the table, in fact. Our waiter came over and took our drink order. Fiancé and I were quite excited that they had a decent beer selection on tap and in bottles, including plenty of German beers. We both opted for draft beer: a German Hefe for him, Kolsch for me. Both were good. We were excited. Our server was way laid back. Had a surfer/stoner kind of vibe. We are laid back ourselves, so we didn't mind. I could see that vibe not going over well with the general public, though. Up next, food: we ordered the pretzel with mustard and cheese. I was most excited about this because I was told they make their own mustard as well as beer cheese sauce with their German beers. I can't possibly believe that to be true now. The pretzels were at LEAST a day old. Dry as a bone. Not only were they not fresh, but they seemed to have been put under a heat lamp to warm up, thus drying them further. We could barely swallow our bites. The beer cheese sauce was Luke warm, at BEST. It was clearly not fresh, had been reheated. Not enough, though - because a cheese skin had formed across the top, reflecting little grease puddles as it continued to congeal before our very eyes. The thought makes me nauseous. The mustard was the "highlight", and that's not saying much. You can't really mess up mustard. But it did not have a "homemade" taste. Honestly it looked like regular yellow mustard mixed with a bit of course ground mustard. Maybe they mix two store bought mustards together and call it "homemade". Iggit. I also ordered the sauerkraut balls. It was described as shredded pulled pork with sauerkraut rolled into a ball and lightly breaded and fried. The insides looked like dog food, and they appeared to be premade. After seeing the insides it made it hard to want to eat more. Iggit. We ordered a side of spaetzel, a German specialty. They are a fried, soft egg noodle. I've had it before at other restaurants and LOVED it. Not the case for West Berlin. It was completely covered in grease, served Luke warm (a trend I am now seeing), and was completely FLAVORLESS. Iggit. My dear fiancé ordered the beef brisket. It also was served luke warm and slathered in brown gravy. The taste was ok enough for him to eat, but the thought of where the gravy and brisket originated from was making my stomach turn in knots. Can you say kitchen nightmare? The brisket came with a choice of sides. For one side, he chose their pomme frites. I kid you not, he received a side of FROZEN crinkly cut fries, and they appeared to have the texture of freezer burnt fries. Absolutely disgusting. For his other side he got German potato salad. Thinly sliced potatoes in a vinegar based dressing. It was ok, but at this point I didn't want one more bit of food from this place crossing my lips. Our service was good enough. The server was attentive as much as we needed, if not a bit quirky. All in all, this place was terrible. A stark contrast from the good reviews it seems to have. I guess maybe we are in the minority here, but we will absolutely not be back. read more

Pretty cool spot! I came close to licking my plate clean, in fact. The location is a little random and the hours are a little bit of a bum out. I came with a large group and though we were seated and served quickly, we were notified that the kitchen was closing at 8pm. WHAT?! Without much time to figure out an order or even decide on getting more food, we all raced to get our food orders in and then hung out over a few beers. The food was great, the atmosphere was a bit lacking, and the feeling of being rushed was a little disappointing. It won't keep me from coming back though. The food was five stars, service was one. I was concerned when we entered at 700 on a Saturday day evening in the summer and the place was empty. I thought, maybe the food isn't good. However that was not the case. We got an appetizer, two entrees, the apple strudel and a couple of German beers on tap. Everything was excellent. Our server was not. She spent most of the evening on her iPhone. Having been a server myself I have both high expectations for good service and some empathy when a dining room or a kitchen is slammed and servers get behind. I don't have patience for a server who is texting instead of working. At the five key points in a dinner, 2 minutes after entrees arrive, 10 minutes in when I'd like to order a second beer, when our entrees are done, when I'd like to order dessert and when I'd like to pay my bill...each and every time she is at the cash register on her iPhone. 90 minutes in and 10 minutes after we finished dessert i finally had had it. I walked up to the cash register with credit card in hand. Then I realized, she is so absorbed in her phone I bet I could stand here, two feet in front of her and she wouldn't notice. This only worked because she was wearing a ball cap and so intent on her phone that even 24 inches away I was undetected. In case you are curious, she wasn't texting world leaders a plan for peace in the Middle East. A couple minutes in she looked up, confused. Give this place a shot for the food. It is great. Bring some patience. You'll need it. read more

Food is great and always has been. The previous Hawaiian grandma server was wonderfully kind and although a little timely was much more impressive than the current weekend server! We've seen her gripe at a group of 6 that "should have given notice" even though the sign on the door says parties of 8 to RSVP, very snippy and rude to them! To us she just says "how many?" after we've already seated ourselves. 10 minutes later she'll bring over water and then after staring at her phone it'll be another 10 minutes to ask for our order. We go knowing what we want to eat and then It's 25 minutes before getting to order and getting a beer every time! This is all happening while there are maybe 2 other tables max. I can deal with an unhappy server who doesn't understand how tips are earned but the real problem is the that she has the news blaring on the TV. I have asked if there are any sports to watch snd she acts inconvenienced to change the channel. Who wants to listen to news while you're trying to enjoy a meal with family?! Not impressed by her attitude and it has kept our family from going back even though we were regulars for quite some time. read more

I absolutely love German food. I would drive 50+ miles for it. I'm surprised I didn't know about this place a while ago. A friend at work recommended it and it's a little treat. My friend and I ordered the pretzel for an appetizer and the beer cheese was fantastic. We also got the pork schnitzel and a few sides and split it. I'm glad we did because the portions are spot on and good for two unless you have a big appetite. Highly recommend this place. read more

Been here twice so far - The first time It was at 745, and they rushed us by telling us the kitchen was about to close - and they were out of half the items. Wasn't too happy but we decided to try it again - WOW. Great service (not hard to see the owner is very hands on), and the food was SPOT ON GREAT. not just some of it, but everything was really good - I was impressed with everything, and I'll definitely be coming back. read more

We were here for dinner on a Saturday. Although the staff seemed short/busy, they were all extremely friendly. The food did not take long to arrive, and the portion sizes were generous. I really enjoyed the beef brisket. It was cooked well and the sauce was good. read more

the food was great. the customer service was terrible. from the moment we walked in the waitress was rude. she wouldn't give us time to decide on our meals and she would ask questions as she was walking away. she seemed mad and bothered by us. the place was very dark and quiet. but the staff was not friendly at all. read more

Well It is a really good and authentic German restaurant my wife had a snichtzel sandwiches on a pretzel bun and I had the brisket sandwich the service was fast and efficient the fries were very tasty. Wavy cut and I asked for a side or curry ketchup which was awesome. My only gripe. So minor. Was that the snitzel roll came to the table soggy. Other than that I will be returning to try the curry worst. read more

Awesome sauerkraut balls, pretzel, and brauts! Hollie is the best waitress that you're ever going to have. No way that I can ever come to Anchorage without stopping here. This placed got me started with my love for German food and is still the gold standard by which I judge all other German restaurants and their food. read more

I've only tried 2 things from the menu & their food isn't horrible, but I don't think it's worth the price point either. I had the brisket sandwich & my brisket was bland. The whole sandwich was bland. Their ranch tasted like it was mixed with wasabi & other people might like that but it wasn't my cup of tea. My boyfriend had something else & he liked it. I personally thought it was a bit too salty but the gravy they used for his food was delicious & that's coming from someone who isn't exactly a fan of gravy. Overall, the food is ok. The waitress is hospitable & kind. The decor is gorgeous. read more

Parking is awful. Not enough spots. No soup of the day No cups with lids for kids They are trying but to survive they need to improve Pretzel appetizer was good. One pretzel was a bit over done (half crunchy) mustard with it hit the spot read more

First time here. Will be back. I had the rahmschnitzle. With spat and pommes. It was delicious. I had he hefe and brought me back to the time I was living in Germany. It's been a couple years since we've been to this place, and I remember we really liked it the first time, just haven't been in the area to remember to go to it, so decided to try it again. We came here for dinner a couple nights ago. I got the Pork Jagerschnitzel with mashed potatoes and Rotkohl (red cabbage cooked with apples). My husband got the Schweinbraten - german style roast pork - with sauerkraut and potato salad. My schniztel was everything I was hoping for - delicious crispy pork smothered in gravy - so good! My sides were yummy, as well. I tried my husband's, and it was equally delicious - loved how tender the meat was in both our meals. Great comfort food, for sure! We tried the apfelstrudel for dessert, and that was delicious, as well. The only complaint there is that I expected the puff pastry to be crispy, and it was not, but still delicious. Service was very friendly, too! Will definitely be back! read more

Very delicious place to eat. The atmosphere was amazing. Felt very warming and welcoming. I didn't feel out of place or all uptight. The service was phenomenal. Both the lady and the gentleman that helped us were very nice and helpful. Without feeling intrusive, they made our dining experience unforgettable. The food we had was amazing. We had the sauerkraut balls, pretzel, bratwurst and currywurst. Every bit of it was delicious. I will definitely make it a regular place to eat. The deserts were amazing as well. Came for lunch for the first time and was pleased with my choice. I got the jagerschnitzel with mash potatoes and the rotkohl, which is a red cabbage salad. I chose pork instead of the chicken per another's recommendation. It's all the way in Mountain View and was a bit of a drive to get there, but I'm glad I did. I will come again to try the brats. Took four to lunch today. We had the hot fresh pretzel appetizer with two big pretzels and two sauces, mustard and a light beer sauce. Guys got salad with pork schnitzel on top. Gals got the jagerschnitzel with red cabbage and spaetzle. Lovely and perfectly cooked. Not hard and dry as another place I tried but tender, fresh and not greasy. I could not get enough of the cabbage which was fresh. Only downside was the strudel was still in the oven. People coming for dinner will have that treat. Service friendly and competent. This place was great! The staff were friendly, but moreover, the waiter we got was extremely informative about their food preparation, recommendations. The waiter knew and had opinions about the food/beer to a T, which was impressive. Great German drafts, fast service, amazing food. The interior reminds me of a 80s pizza joint or something, and could use some improvement. They could also benefit from a kids menu, even if it's altered portions from their regular menu. If I could go lower than 1 star I would. Keep on driving. I had the schnitzel and my fiancé had the schnitzel sandwich. We both tried to send it back but was told they can't guarantee their food is good so we will still have to pay for it. I've had both good and okay schnitzel, but West Berlin gave me my first inedible schnitzel. I was so excited to try but it completely fell off the map. Maybe Chef Gordon can save it, until then... don't waste your time. Also, the pretzel tasted microwaved, dried out rubbery "pretzel". Terrible food and terrible service. read more

My first stop there was for lunch a few days ago and I have put it on my list of favorite eateries. The Kraut Balls, Schnitzel sandwich, and German potato salad were all excellent! The sandwich was piled high with thin, crisp, and tender pork schnitzel topped with tomato and onion on a genuine pretzel roll and served with their homemade aioli. The Kraut Balls - chopped pork and kraut, balled, breaded and deep fried - crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, delicious all the way through. I kinda feel like some people, are really harsh, on this small business...... when busy, & when not! I've been there, while busy & if they have large parties, there IS a bit of a wait!! My boyfriend and I went to West Berlin about 2 weeks after opening. The place was empty and the staff were sitting at a table chatting. The food was good but kinda cold. He loved everything so we went back again and I have to say I was super pleased with EVERYTHING!
