Went here tonight with my husband and another couple and had a fantastic experience. The owner is former military who was stationed in Germany and liked it so much that he stayed there after he got out of the service. He spent a few years cooking in German restaurants, so his recipes are authentic.
We had made a reservation for 6:30, and when we arrived, the table was dressed completely dressed including the water (in GLASS glasses) which had obviously been recently poured. The food was delicious and reasonably priced with huge portions. One friend and I had the Rahmschnitzel (breaded pork with mushroom cream sauce) with spatzle and sauerkraut, my husband had the Schweinebraten (German Style Pork Roast) with German potato salad (cold style), and our other friend had the Jagerschnitzel (breaded pork with brown gravy). Both of our friends got the rotkohl (sweet & sour red cabbage) and spatzle.
Did I mention that the portions were huge??!!! The schnitzels were each about 8 inches in diameter with about a 1/2 cup each of the sides (included in the entreé price) and only $10 and $11. The breading had great flavor, and was nice and crisp, yet the pork was still moist. The sauces were also good. My husbands pork roast had 3-4 generous slices of melt-in-your mouth tender, moist pork that tasted pretty close to my German/Bohemian mother-in-law's recipe, also only $11.00.
We went toward the end of their night (they close at 8, we got there at 6:30ish) and they were out of the sauerkraut balls that we were dying to try as an appetizer, so we substituted with two orders of potato pancakes - we were told there were three pancakes in an order. Well, we would have been fine with one order. The pancakes were 4" across, again with great flavor, crispy outside and fluffy inside. Also, the table behind me (who had been there when we came in) got rolls with their dinner, but we didn't. I suspect that the restaurant had run out of them, as well.
The only "ding" I can give them is that the waitstaff needs to dress (and act) a little more professionally. One of the servers was wearing baggy old jeans with a tired sloppy sweatshirt over a tee shirt. When we came in, nobody greeted us, but then Shaggy said from the middle of the room, "You the reservation?" then pointed over his head to the table behind him. On the other hand, our server was wearing a button down sport shirt over old jeans and was attentive and pleasant.
We are definitely going back, earlier in the day, so we can try some of the sauerkraut balls! read more
