I'm glad Ottawa has some clothing stores with styles outside the GAP, AE, Old Navy, etc. Not that there's anything wrong with those stores but they're pretty boring. Schad carries a nice balance of North American and European brands. The unfortunate thing about some of the North American brands is that they've been run into the ground since the Jersey Shore phenomenon! Brands like Ed Hardy and Affliction are carried here and unfortunately Dom Rebel (based out of Montreal) has been styling a lot of shirts like them recently. Some of the other brands that I'm glad they have include Diesel, Energie, Sand and J Lindeberg. It's not for everyone but I do get complimented regularly. I believe there is a slight mark up on these brands compared to some of the other stores I've been in that carry these lines in Toronto and Montreal but it's not that much and the store owner and the staff are super friendly and super helpful. To get an idea, Chantel (the store owner) once tried on a dress for me that I was purchasing for a friend to give me an idea of what it would look like while being worn! That's pretty damn awesome!

They have items from previous seasons at lower prices and I've found some really good deals here. They also have a small selection of off-season items, so if you need a pair of shorts in the dead of winter or a coat in the middle of summer, you might find what you need here. They have a huge selection of regular sizes, petites and plus sizes. They have mostly business attire, but they also have casual wear and evening gowns. I love how I can actually buy evening gowns here off the rack and not need any alterations (albeit only from their petite line). So all you short and slim ladies (e.g. 0P and 2P) who have a hard time finding formal wear that doesn't require paying an arm and a leg for alterations, this is the place for you. Selection is not that great for these very small sizes, but I have purchased many gala dresses here (and a fraction of the regular price). This location also carries a good amount of Joseph Ribkoff, Frank Lyman and Katherine Barclay. Although they usually start at size 8. So great for normal sized people, but not for those wee like me :( I will be the first to admit that many items at Laura/Melanie Lyne are matronly and frumpy, but they also have some more fashionable pieces (although I guess "fashionable" is in the eye of the beholder). I go here often so I can swipe up those pieces at a good price. They have fitting rooms both at the front and at the back of the store. There are washrooms at the back (in with the fitting rooms). This Laura/Melanie Lyne is in a strip mall, so there is a lot of free parking.

It's at a great price point, some if it is really funky and cute, and it seems to be made with some decent quality materials (I have never had my skin turn green from their items as I have with some other inexpensive costume jewelry). The store is nice and bright inside, the clothes are displayed nicely, but I do find the cash register "cube" in the middle of the store to be a little awkwardly placed. If the store is busy, it's a bit difficult to navigate around that area - I realize it's a corner store so they have probably made the most of the space, but there is one clothing rack that just out from the wall could be removed to fairly easily solve this problem. Otherwise, it's great.

In my opinion their clothes are more fashionable than places like Reitmans, Cleo and Ricki's, with quality being about the same or maybe a little bit higher. I really love their dresses. The cuts are usually very flattering and they often have an asymmetric element to them, which is totally my style, lol. They only have regular sizes here, no petite or plus sizes. They often have sales of 20-60% off clearance items. I've gotten really cute pieces here for less than $10. This location at the Ottawa Trainyards is big, with lots of selection. Their fitting rooms at the back are unisex. Lots of free parking in the plaza.

Most of the garments are now made in China, yet remain a little on the pricey side. There are usually lots of good sales to take advantage of though. My review is for my visit to the Trainyards location earlier this afternoon where I browsed the sales racks looking for a couple tops. I tried a couple on and selected 2 tops. One had a stain on the back of it. I was going to ask about a possible further reduction on the price. There appeared to only be one clerk in he store and she was busy with another customer. By the time she was finished with the other customer I had started to browse the store some more and decided I really didn't want to buy the tops I had selected, so I left.

So first and foremost, let it be known that I love Winners and all Winners-style stores (e.g…read more Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Ross Dress for Less, Saks Off 5th, Nordstorm Rack, etc.). I love rummaging through junk to find gems. I love that they have new stuff every week, unlike most stores that only have new inventory every season. I also love getting brand name items at discount prices. That all being said, this Winners location is one of the better ones in Ottawa. It's not big, but it has a good mix of stuff. They don't have a lot of higher end stuff here though. I don't think they even have a "Contemporary Designers" section, or if they do, it is very small. No luxury brands like Gucci, Valentino, Veneta Bottega, etc. In Ottawa, I don't think Winners carries luxury brands. I've only seen them at the Marshalls in Trainyards (same parent company). Anyway to give you an idea of the deals, I got a pair of Tsubo pumps here once for $26, and a pair of lambskin Cole Haan espadrilles for $36 - both on clearance of course. Although full disclosure: my feet are not a popular size (5). It's in a strip mall in Bells Corners - same mall as Shopper's Drug Mart, Metro and Mark's. Lots of free parking.
