Outside view of milk from dalhousie street

Hands down, this is my favourite clothing store in Ottawa. Having lived practically next door to it for 2 years, it was usually my first stop when I needed a new outfit, found myself with a little bit of birthday money or even if I was bored on a Sunday afternoon. I know that I will always find fashionable items that are not only unique, but correspond with the current and seasonal trends. While I adore this store, I can see that it is not for everyone. Some of the fashion pieces, along with the accessories are a little bit quirky and funky, usually an embodiment of what I can only describe as the "hipster" style. I have found many summer dresses, blouses, scarves and earrings at this store though, and miss looking into the window and viewing their every changing, always creative window displays as I walk to work. While it can be a little bit pricey, I am willing to pay the price in order to have a unique item. They also often have really great sales a few times a year, and once an item is no longer "in season" (such as jackets after winter and skirts after summer) they usually end up on the %40 off rack. Milk also often participates in the Dalhousie shopping nights, so keep your eyes pealed for these events which feature extended hours and great deals. The woman that owns the store is great, and I get a kick out of chatting with her each and every time I go in. It is usually not too busy, and I have never had to wait for a change room. I would also recommend this place to anyone looking to buy a birthday present, or perhaps a stocking stuffer. There are plenty of unique items under $20; such as scarves, rings, necklaces ad belts.

Love this shop, always so trendy and cute and I enjoy stopping in. My only problem is that I feel they're overpriced.

I'm glad Ottawa has some clothing stores with styles outside the GAP, AE, Old Navy, etc. Not that there's anything wrong with those stores but they're pretty boring. Schad carries a nice balance of North American and European brands. The unfortunate thing about some of the North American brands is that they've been run into the ground since the Jersey Shore phenomenon! Brands like Ed Hardy and Affliction are carried here and unfortunately Dom Rebel (based out of Montreal) has been styling a lot of shirts like them recently. Some of the other brands that I'm glad they have include Diesel, Energie, Sand and J Lindeberg. It's not for everyone but I do get complimented regularly. I believe there is a slight mark up on these brands compared to some of the other stores I've been in that carry these lines in Toronto and Montreal but it's not that much and the store owner and the staff are super friendly and super helpful. To get an idea, Chantel (the store owner) once tried on a dress for me that I was purchasing for a friend to give me an idea of what it would look like while being worn! That's pretty damn awesome!

They have a cute kids table at the back for colouring, which I thought was very considerate and welcoming for families. Expect high prices here. I am always disappointed when boutiques have so many small sizes. Larger people like nice things and have money too ;) (just sayin')

However, I'm not as stoked about it because most merchandise at Saks OFF 5TH are specifically for Saks OFF 5TH and were never in Saks Fifth Avenue (like how the stuff at the Banana Republic Factory Store was never actually in the Banana Republic retail store). That being said, Saks OFF 5TH does occasionally have some pieces that were in Saks Fifth Avenue for a fraction of the price. However, at the end of the day, 70% off a $2000 dress is still $600, which is still too rich for my blood, lol (this is a real example, although from the Kanata Saks OFF 5TH - it was a beautiful Roland Mouret dress that I still dream about. Luckily it was 4 sizes too big for me, so I didn't have to do any soul searching, haha). Ok, let's talk about this specific location downtown. It's brand spanking new and they are still not completely finished renovating at the time of the writing of this review. Everything is really neatly organized. I was there a little bit before lunch time on a weekday and staff outnumbered customers. Maybe people just don't know about it yet. The change rooms are big and clean. They don't have doors but curtains. However, the curtains have little metal hooks on them and there are little metal rings on the wall, so you can "lock" your curtain. I thought that that was kind of cool. There is a large women's clothes section, a smaller men's clothes section and a smaller still children's clothes section. The women's shoe section is large, and the handbags section is decent. I think there's a men's shoe section as well, but I'm not entirely sure, as I did not check it out. It's a fun place to poke around. I'm glad that Ottawa is getting some new stores.
