Randomly popped in looking for Greek/Mediterranean food for lunch. Was pleasantly surprised by the simple menu, and made a great choice of beef shawarma sandwich. Had to wait like 10 minutes as the dish was cooked to order in a sauté pan which was brought out to a server who then grilled my pita bread. Then I got to build my shawarma sandwich choosing fresh cut veggies and covering the whole thing in a delicious white greek yogurt sauce that had all the right flavors of garlic, cucumber and fresh herbs. This isn't a fancy place, and essentially adds up to Middle Eastern fast food, but for what it is, the quality is quite good. If you're looking for Middle Eastern and Mediterranean fast and delicious, Wessen is the place to go. It's in a kind of unassuming strip mall, and inside there's an informal arrangement of tables and chairs There's always more down in the trays than there is on the menu above the counter, so be sure to ask what's there. I ordered a combo plate of kafta kabob and chicken schnitzel. The kabob was delicious. The schnitzel was a little dry but tasty nonetheless. There are fancier places nearby that have somewhat better food, but you'd go here for the same reason you go to the little taqueria or cheap Chinese joint--for something Middle Eastern that's fast and inexpensive. One of the best restaurants in the Phoenix Metro Area. You can call ahead and special order specific food items including things not on their regular menu. Food is always amazing and delicious. Staff is always accommodating and willing to recommend dishes. Sam is an amazing chef and has prepared dishes for both my family and special dinner parties. I've tried a lot of local ME restaurants around ASU and this one is one of the best. Lots of variety, homemade, good quality ingredients, friendly staff, tons of seating and clean. I ate the special of the day, which was rice, potatoes, pepper and onion, eggplant, shredded chicken and the 12 -herb jasmine rice. It was a huge portion and very delicious. I got lunch to-go & I had SUCH high hopes. A good middle Eastern restaurant across the street from my house would've been amazing. Instead I spent way too much for barely any food. The appetizer sampler was okay, the grape leaves were great, the baba ganoush was not. I ordered a creamy lamb with yellow rice (I can't recall the name) which literally consisted of a styrofoam container FILLED with rice and about 3 bites of meat (as well as 3 bites of fat.) So, the tiniest piece of lamb, half of which was fat, for about $17 before tax. The baklava I ordered... Well, I couldn't tell you how it was because I wasn't given any, I did, however, pay for it. When I got home I called to say I didn't receive it, but they said I could not get a new piece because I didn't get a receipt. The parking lot is very large and always has parking spots available, which is an unexcepted relief when comparing it to the typical Tempe plaza. All of the meat purchased by the restaurant is halal, meaning that the preparation of the meat is acceptable according to Muslim law. My favorite dishes by far are the fish (masgouf), the chicken kebab plate, and the mansaf (a popular lamb dish). All of the dishes are made to order using only fresh ingredients. The fish is grilled whole seasoned and served on a bed of basmati rice; the dish is known in the Middle East as masgouf--the pride dish of the Iraqi people. I was looking to get a Gyro sandwich for lunch and this place is nearby so decided to give it a try. Well, when I opened the container, I was kind of surprised to see lettuce on it. Not used to having lettuce, and in my experience, those that do usually aren't the best. Well, my assumptions were correct. It wasn't a great gyro. The meat was chunks instead of shaved and had a lemon taste to it. Disappointed and I guess have to save my Gyro cravings for my usual gyro shop. I ordered the Gyro Combo with a coupon. The food looked good, but the meat was absolutely tasteless, and it wasn't like the shaved meat usually served in a Gyro. Then, there was the service... It appeared my business wasn't appreciated, because the cashier seemed "suspicious" of my coupon. Because I live close to the restaurant, the coupon was placed on my door. The girl at the register, along with a manager or owner was preoccupied with some people who didn't seem to be customers, they seemed like business affiliates. However, the girl found time to quiz me about where I got my coupon from, proceeded to COMPLETELY ignore my request for extra tomatoes, then tried to send me on my way without and giving me my drink. The older woman gave me my drink, I thanked her and went along my way. I still have the coupon, because it has multiple deals on it.
