Disappointing Experience...
Great First Impression, Poor…read moreFollow Through
I initially had a very positive impression of this contractor. He came across as professional, knowledgeable, easy to communicate with, and seemed to have a great vision for our remodel. Early conversations were promising, and I genuinely felt we were on the same page. Unfortunately, that first impression quickly faded.
The biggest issue was reliability and communication. I was repeatedly promised a quote by certain dates, only to have those deadlines pushed back multiple times. Throughout this process, I was reassured that everything was on track and that we were aligned on the project. Based on those assurances, I held off on pursuing additional contractors and quotes. Ultimately, the repeated delays caused me to miss my planned October remodel timeline entirely.
When the estimate finally arrived, several aspects of the pricing were extremely difficult to justify. For example, the cost quoted to do the master bathroom shower which involved only approximately 20% more tile than the other bathrooms (in which I was to pay for tile material), and relocate a single bathtub drain and fill just a couple of feet seemed outrageous for the scope of work involved, and was quoted at nearly double the price. When I say double I mean about $15,000 more. It felt as though the price increased simply because it was labeled the "master bathroom," rather than being based on the actual difference in work required.
I understand that contractors have different pricing structures, and I have no issue paying a fair price for quality workmanship. However, I do expect estimates to be reasonable, consistent, and open to discussion.
What bothered me most was how quickly the communication changed once I began questioning portions of the estimate. Someone who had initially been extremely friendly, responsive, and eager to earn my business suddenly became difficult to reach. Following our last interaction, multiple messages went completely unanswered.
It's disappointing because I genuinely wanted this working relationship to succeed. I invested considerable time in the process, trusted the assurances I was given, and ultimately lost valuable time on my remodel.
My biggest concern is simple: If communication, accountability, and meeting deadlines are already this difficult before a project even begins, I can't imagine what the experience would be like once construction is underway and money has exchanged hands.
My advice to anyone considering this contractor is to be cautious. Get multiple quotes, don't rely on verbal assurances about timelines, and pay close attention to how communication changes when you start asking questions about pricing.
Unfortunately, my experience was that he was more than happy to be your best buddy when everything was going his way, but the moment I questioned the estimate, that professionalism and communication seemed to disappear.
A great first impression means very little without reliability, transparency, and follow through.
A simple, I'm sorry I don't think we can come to an agreement, would have been completely appropriate from this contractor. Instead I was ignored and left in the dark.
