Most trucks I know seem to trade from Tuesday onwards, leaving the streets a little bare. So you can imagine my surprise when a friend and I spotted this shiny silver van as we were leaving Adelaide Uni. I've heard of Papa's Gourmet Hot Dogs briefly, but I'd never had a chance to try them before. Let's get this out of the way first. They're not quite what I would call hot dogs. Instead of the regular American hot dogs, Papa's have a range of gourmet sausages on the menu. They're still served on a long bun, but I was a little surprised at first. Papa's is a bit like Subway, but without the clear visuals. First you pick your bread (choose from a traditional and delicious bun or panini), then your sausage (there are about 5 to choose from), then start adding toppings and sauces. This is great, especially if you're a bit of a hot dog connoisseur. Unfortunately if you're a bit indecisive it's not the best. It would be great if Papa's had some recommended combos to give newbies a bit of a head start. I know what I like, but I also liked most of their options so choosing a combination that would go great together was a little hard. I ended up with a traditional roll, beef and sun dried tomato sausage, homemade slaw, cheese, jalepenos, and hot tomato sauce. Other toppings include caramelised onions, seasoned pickles, seasonal salad, and sautéed mushrooms. Personally I think they need to add some sauerkraut to their list, especially as they have a German Bratwurst sausage as one of their options. Sauces include ketchup, Coopers Ale BBQ, garlic sauce, sweet mustard, English mustard, Japanese mayo, and Thai chili. Hotdogs start at $8, but a few of the toppings are $1 extra. You can add most of them while still sticking at the $8 mark. They also have a range of American sodas including Dr. Pepper and Cherry Coke. The sausages are made locally, and they are great. The toppings I had all worked well. I'd just like a little more guidance with my combinations. We're not all hot dog whizzes, I'd hate to end up with a poor combo.

I was pretty happy with my meal here, they seemed to be just out of the Wagyu so I tried the Chorizo hot dog which was pretty nice. The bread seemed a bit light on the usual batter reminding me of chinese buns, but they do provide you with a ciabata option and with other options like the english pork sausage on the menu, it's a great little stop for a snack cart. I didn't get sick and I was quite full after so I can't really complain.

Run by two guys by the name of Steve & Doug, they have attempted to bring a little bit of home to the shores of Adelaide. Both guys were extremely friendly and made you feel welcome in their cafe. They were not short of a story from the old United States either. The wife had the Seattle hotdog which was extremely tasty (I had to sneak a bite), where I had the good ole trusty American Hamburger with a side of fries. My burger was delicious, but the whole meal lacked that little bit of America- it needed to serve a quarter stick of pickle with every American meal served you could get one as an option, however I think that extra little touch would have gone a long way. These guys also serve a bit of Mexican food as well. If we were locals, we would probably drop in again to try some more of the menu, however 700km these days isn't exactly local.

First of all and forgive me if I sound like a elitist coffee idiot but you can't open a specialist coffee house and use grinders beans (a Coca-Cola Amatil) company. You should also be using a high grade milk (not whatever is cheap at the supermarket). - *Most importantly when someone orders a coffee (me) you should be warming up a fresh pourer of milk, not re-heating one that was half used which was sitting in the fridge for god knows how long* I can honestly say with my hand on my heart that the drink that I received was without a doubt the worst coffee I have experienced in my time of living on this earth. It makes me angry that people open cafés because it's booming in Adelaide at the moment, thinking they can make a quick buck dishing out a very poor quality product for a premium price. Rant over. Ps I'm always happy to edit my reviews if things chance. However someone will need to let me know because for me it's a lifetime ban.

Mainly because they are quick when on the run, but I was also pretty much addicted to Wendys Dogs for a while in my early 20's (BBQ dog with Onion Butter, Cheese and a dash of hot chilli to be precise). When I saw New York Dreams the other day on Semaphore Road I almost wet myself, surely they would have brilliant hot dogs! Well, firstly I really had to talk myself into buying the CHEAPEST one......which was $6.95.....FOR A HOT DOG. Sauce and Mustard was all the extra added. Why didn't I go for one of the other dogs with more adventurous toppings? I may be a tubby be-atch, but there is no way I am pay $8+ for a friggin hotdog! They also have wings etc. on the menu, but the hotdog put a big enough dent in my wallet. I would LOVE to give this place a big rap, but they really need to knock 20% off of their prices across the board....then we'll talk! Just for the record, the dog was good.

The store is really cute and has NY basketball memorabilia all over the walls a television playing NY themed shows. They sell all different kinds of hotdogs from the traditional favourites to more gourmet options. Despite thinking my eating experience would be amazing, sadly it wasn't. The store has so much potential and whilst the hotdogs were ok, as the highlight of their menu and whole eating establishment, I thought they would be better than they were. The process is sort of like Subway for hotdogs and they let you pick the kind of bread you want and offer three different kind of hotdogs including Kransky. They also offer a range of other food including tacos and nachos and a dessert range with some really yummy looking cupcakes. I think it is a really good idea, different from most other places in Adelaide - and owned by a 36'er player, you know it has true American influences.

My partner I think ordered the cheeseburger ($8.70) and again it was a small serving. considering the price we paid we were expecting a lot more size-wise Our Royale fries were messed up, we were given a basket of chilli cheese fries, then the Royal Fries came out - we only paid for one basket and I was afraid someone missed out. The cheese tasted super processed, floury and we couldnt eat them, they were not pleasurable at all. Note that the cheese makes the fries soggy and you have to eat them with a fork. Less cheese would be more, perhaps? I heard the new store on Glen Osmond road is a lot better, but a little out of our way to try. Make the burgers bigger and we'd be happier!

I really wanted a cone of this the other day and the guy said he regretted to inform me but Chocollo had been discontinued. NOOOO. I had a sherbet cone instead. The hotdogs are pretty grand if you're feeling like putting on a few extra inches, although I bit into one once and suddenly there was mustard all over my shirt, thankfully this happened when I was 10 years old so what with the global financial crisis and everything they've probably had to cut back on the amount of mustard per dog. Not that anything is wrong with Gelatissimo but damn 48 Flavors had me really impressed. Because they have flavours that other icecream places do not have. Actually, for me it's just 3 flavours in particular. Durian, Taro and Black Sesame. With durian, it's probably one of the most divisive foods I can think of. People either absolutely love it or hate it. It has a custard-like texture with a rich creamy quality. However the people who absolutely despise it will point out it's pungent aroma, and pungent it putting it very politely. Basically it smells like rotting fruit mixed with other things. It's considered the Kind of Fruits in SE Asia and it's definitely one of my favourites. I wasn't going to get anything...until I saw the sign saying 'Durian Icecream- Tasting Available.' I think my eyes widened a bit and I immediately went to buy a scoop. I tasted before buying and then changed my mind to 2 scoops!! It's that good. The icecream's flavour 100% matches that of ripe durian, and I was kicking myself that it took me so long to discover it. I'm definitely coming back to try a few more flavours, and to get the durian a few more times. However I may need to sit a bit further away from my friends, because they kept pointing out the smell!
