It's very expensive. It's somewhat archaic but there's a charm to it. This is not your regular mass-produced paperback kind of books. They have very limited prints throughout the year and they offer a tour that you can take of the factory to get a glimpse on how it is that they make what they make. They had interesting art that reflected people in the community,…read morehad an open studio event, that people in other cities tried to copy and had a board of directors and a staff that reflected the diversity of Oakland. No longer. After that sweet time in the 90's, early 2000's the board became populated with gentrifiers, the price to participate in Open studio's increased drastically, and the art became rather dull. To participate, groups of 5-10 artists would invade a studio so that they could afford to participate. I would drop by when I was in old Oakland where they had a quaint little space. Then they moved to 2nd street and the space was OK. The work, underwhelming. But now that they are in Frank Ogawa Plaza, gentrification is complete. This place no longer reflects the community and people are doing what they have always done when their needs aren't being met - they are coming up with their own spaces and own concepts for shows. The result of their debacle with the open studios is that people are having their own on that weekend. Bring back Betty Kano, please! This organization really needs your help!

Came here on a whim...we were visiting from Hawaii. We were staying in downtown SF at the Palace…read moreHotel and walked to the Ferry building. While there, we saw the ferry and said to each other, "eh, let's go take a trip to Sausalito!" We found our way to Scrimshaw Gallery, which was a short walk from the port, just off the main strip. Good looking woodworks from local artisans. Not sure why all the reviews of the grumpy dude with the mustache, but Mike was pleasant and helpful. He was quiet at first, I'm sure just exhausted from the many looky-loos filtering through the shop. Mike was more than happy to share the history of the pieces in the store. There were tons of bowls and great looking, well-made wooden boxes with handsome inlays. In particular there was a bowl, small, really nice markings and designs from the natural wood, that I was interested in. Mike explained the history of it, how it was made and how the unusual naturally burnt rim of the bowl came to be. I was sold! One big problem I had was hand carrying it home...but Mike offered to ship it...for FREE! Of course, I was weary about that because I wasn't sure if it would be intact when I received it...and I really loved this one of a kind piece. After all, it was hand turned from a local artisan who has since retired! But I trusted Mike and agreed to having it shipped (and THANKED him for doing it complimentarily!). I received it in the mail yesterday...fully bubble wrapped in a box...in PERFECT condition! Much Mahalo, Mike!

Overall if you're in the area I'd stop in, but I wouldn't make a special trip.
