I had no idea this…read moreplace was even there in the side of the food building at the ex until I attended an event celebrating a fresh album release by @afrowaveto an organization dedicated to promoting Caribbean music in Toronto. Of course this organization was responsible for the fantastic party that I attended that night, but the host who was part of the Withrow Common Art Gallery was honoured by being invited to make a little speech explaining her devotion to this event and all that it stood for. She seemed genuinely appreciative of her guests event and the art that adorned the walls and accompanied the music happening that night. She was even up dancing to the awesome @djnatural.wav later in the night. Great spot to check out if you're at the exhibition grounds!

There are some at the 169 Enterprise building (where you'll find the Cineplex movie theatre and restaurants like Me Ne Va) the adjoining 179 Enterprise building (wall murals and outdoor sculptures), the underground parking structure which houses photographer Hank O'Neal's work and the Pride of Canada Carousel which is catty corner to both buildings at 8080 Birchmount Rd. The cool thing is that the works of art are available for viewing 24/7 because the 169 building and parking garage houses a Goodlife Fitness which is open 24/7. This also means there are security guards stationed inside to keep an eye on the patrons' safety. Be careful in the parking garage and watch out for cars when looking at the artwork. Make sure to visit the cool touch screen directory in the parking garage near the entrance to the building where the stairs and escalator are. You can find information on the artists and their work here. Also look for the informational signs near each piece. A 3 star experience that can easily be bumped up to 4 stars if you include a meal at one if the restaurants; include a movie and you have yourself a 5 star experience.

the parts gallery in leslieville is among my two favorite galleries in the east end. never am i…read morenot intrigued at the sole piece that hangs in their window on a half wall that faces outside. the space itself is simple with white walls and aged yet glossy hardwood floors. every time ive been in, theyve featured many different artists, mainly painters using various mediums. theres something about the style of artwork that is there that is very bold, colourful and aware without being messy or caught up in its own execution. here are a couple examples: when i went the other day, there were these large watercolours that were very simple in their compositional arrangement. one of them was a picture of a large commercial passenger plane. the other a family portrait, yet it seemed as if it was a painting of a photograph of a family. the plane painting, because of its size, simplicity in colour and wateriness/bloodiness of the paint instantly (with the help of world history) invoked the threat of danger - whos in the plane? wheres it going? the other painting was of a family standing there to take a picture. even though each family members face was non specific and washed out, you could sense how each member felt about the experience just by their stature and positioning. it was great. one major lesson in life and art is to have the awareness when to step back and let it be and the artwork here feels like it has that innate sensibility. the staff is very nice and not pretentious at all; its artist run. also if you want to do a layaway, you can and youll get 4 months to pay it off interest free.
