Sounded friendly on the phone but quoted 100k to renovate a kitchen, and 40k to renovate a bathroom. Needing 3, in a three family home, that would be 400k .... laughable .... I do all my own kitchens and bathrooms in my 2 families -- bathrooms for 7500 and kitchens for 23,000. We booked WKB to do our outside deck and they did a great job. They weren't the cheapest contractor, but I appreciated Jared's professionalism upon meeting and doing an initial walk-through. (As for the lengthy bid that another reviewer mentioned: yes, it was lengthy, but I liked the thoroughness and in fact used WKB's bid as a yardstick against comparing other bids. I'd gotten estimates of the project via text from other contractors and when I asked "does that include clean-up?" or something else, I'd find that no, they'd forgotten to include it. With WKB's bid, there were no surprises.) Ben was the lead on our deck renovation and also polite, professional and happy to answer any questions. I appreciated that he and Jared met with us right before the work started to figure out what space could be used for storing materials, where to put a dumpster, etc. instead of just assuming. There were a few days when the weather was bad, and Ben got in touch just to let us know that he would be coming the next day. As I said above, there were no surprises and we knew what was going on every step of the way. We're very happy with our deck and would use WKB for another project. read more

They have never gone over estimate,blown a deadline, or provided anything but the highest quality work. They are thoughtful, resourceful, and great to work with. When I planned to redo my bathroom last year I went on Yelp and Angie's List to look for contractors. Wendel Klein had five stars on each site, so I contacted Jared for an appointment. Turned out to be an excellent decision. Ryan was the carpenter and he is the main reason my new bathroom came out exactly how I envisioned. His workmanship and attention to detail is evident throughout. He matched the woodwork around the doors and window to the original woodwork in the hallway. Everything fits, is lined up correctly. He always answered my questions, was professional and polite. Sean, the painter, did careful, neat work. Wendel Klein Builders have completed two major projects of our home; one just after we bought the house and the other a year later (that shows how happy we were with their work.) Jared and his people are highly skilled, reliable, thorough, neat and friendly. First, the whole project was pre-planned in great detail, ensuring that Jared had captured exactly what we wanted (diagrams included) and involving us in the decisions about materials, look-and-feel, etc. Then the work proceeded as scheduled. Wendel Klein completed a gut renovation and addition to our kitchen in late 2014/early 2015 and did an amazing job. This was not an easy task, as our house is over 300 years old and has numerous restrictions and the typical difficulties of renovating an old house. The project leader was on-site almost every day and their excellent crew was very consistent throughout the project. Subcontractors were scheduled efficiently to prevent as much down time as possible and any delays were communicated ahead of time. Wendel Klein is extremely professional and eliminates the headaches generally associated with contractors. We are very happy with the professional work and special touches in our recent whole house renovation. The house was in extremely rough shape when we purchased it, and had suffered a leak that required gutting a large portion of the house. WKB oversaw the demolition, assisted with the design, coordinated a large number of subcontractors (plumbing, electrical, ALL hardwood flooring and HVAC all had to be replaced, plus we had tile and stone installed), It was important to us that any remaining "character" be retained, and not only were some original pocket doors hidden in walls restored, a new set of pocket doors was installed and a new closet was installed that literally looked like it had always been there as the trim and details matched existing doorways exactly. The carpentry was extraordinary, with surprising and beautiful little details around bathroom plumbing. There was a lot of attention to detail throughout, with stone thresholds matching countertops, etc. Definitely a high end experience, with good adherence to time and budget constraints. The house recently won a 2013 Director's Award from Somerville Historic Preservation! read more

Wendel Klein recently did some work on our kitchen. They did a great job and stayed within the somewhat lower budget that we had for the project. There were very easy to get in touch with and worked around our schedules. What might have taken 3 days for someone else, they did in 1.5 days. We were very satisfied with the project and absolutely love how our kitchen came out. The painting job was great, countertops, and sink installation all solid. We have used Wendel Klein Builders for several renovation projects in our city condo, and they have done a great job on all of them. Will and Sean did a great job on the construction part of the work--our new sliding doors look great! And all the subcontractors did a great job. Throughout the whole renovation process Jared was very responsive and Will (who did the doors and oversaw the rest of the work, coordinating with subcontractors, etc) went above and beyond to make sure every last details was taken care of and done well. I searched Yelp for decently reviewed contractors to do kitchen/bathroom renovations. I came across Wendel Klein and decided to give them a try. Not sure if all other reviews here are from their family and friends but certainly not a 5 star place. On a positive side, the owner that came was polite, on time and overall it was a decent conversation. Over the last 20+ years I came to appreciate itemized quotes from the contractors to know where the money is going and what the cost is. However what Wendel Klein provided was way beyond that. There were pages and pages of various ridiculous charges, from cleaning fee to meetings with client, to moving tools to the house, final walk through, on site mgmt, in office mgmt, drive charges to lumber yards and my favorite $1000 for "initial set up and protection" (yes we are talking about putting up a thin sheet of plastic to prevent dust from going all over the place). So many of the itemized charges were repeated and just worded slightly different. The overall quote was so ridiculously large, with absolutely no rational. I understand that you usually get what you pay for, and that prices are going to vary greatly from company to company but we got another 4 quotes and Wendel Klein was close to being triple the highest other quote that we received! Maybe they do a good job, but price can't be justified at all. read more
